Hello man! I'm Emiliano from Italy. I just inherited a beautiful 2002 vstrom dl 1000. It had been standing still for at least 10 years, ofc found in a pitiful state. It's a bike that I really care about and thanks to your videos and your ease of explanations I was able to take the first steps to get my vstrom back again! Hello Urban Monk, thank´s for this very very helpfull tutorial! 👍One hint for other users: my 2004 V-Strom 1000 WVBS does not have a second tube on the right side - that with the clamp (min 10:54). So don´t search for it on other places ... it seems to be still not existent on every version of the DL1000

I bought a first gen DL650 almost 6 months ago, and I was terrified of having to take off all the plastic and remove the tank just to change a simple air filter. Your videos are absolutely brilliant. Thank you. While I figured out how to get the air filter changed out myself, I should have checked out your video first. It would have saved a lot of time. I did the spark plugs at the same time. Boy, that front spark plug is a pain in the behind. Great videos on chain and sprocket changes too. Thanks again.

Thanks for watching! Yeah, I find I stretch the plug change interval quite a bit because of the work involved with that front one. That said, the plug gaps have remained in spec always even adding 3-5k miles to the recommended change interval. That's just my experience.

Great video. I just changed mine on my 02 DL-1000 with 58k miles. I am not sure if it had ever been done before! It was so full of bugs and seeds and dirt I can't believe it had been running as good as it had. It did backfire occasionally at low speed but that was the only issue I noticed. Hopefully the backfire goes away now and I am excited to see if I notice a power increase. I never thought it lacked power before but the only thing I had to compare it to was a KLR 650 I had years ago and an 85 Goldwing I recently had. Needless to say it was wildly faster than both of those even with a severely dirty air filter! Anyway, thanks for a very well done tutorial!

Thanks for watching! The backfire at low speeds is likely still there with a new filter. These 1st Gen Strom are famous for it. Mixture is set too lean at factory. Fix is a Power Commander or similar fuel control module. I put one on at 20k miles and haven't looked back. Now at 86k.

Greetings Mr Monk. I'm about to fit a K&N Filter to my 08 DL1000. Are there any changes to be made with regards to tuning after fitment. Would I need to get an ECU reflash or power commander to help with the balance of having more air available. Were there any significant difference after you changed to K&N filter. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Great channel btw. Very informative and helpful in many regards.

Prior to installing my K&N I had already installed a Power Commander V so my fueling had already been altered from stock. I questioned whether I would need additional changes to fueling after installing K&N but it runs fine so I haven't made any tweaks.

I was watching the filter change. Could you punch a couple of holes in the front on top of the cover. It looks like it’s 2 chambers. Also if you can punch the holes for more are would the computer adjust the fuel for the extra air?

It may, but I can't say for certain it would properly adjust fueling across all throttle positions and rpms. Questions are "how large are the holes you suggest punching and too what end?" I suppose. With a power commander fueling can be adjusted to a wider array of configurations in intake and exhaust, but the tuning/mapping still needs to be done. Thanks for watching!

Agreed. That's why I change them when I change my plugs and do valve checks. Thankfully these modern pleated filters can go that long between changes typically (depending on riding environment). Thanks for watching.
