I've got an 06 dl650. I'm putting a second set of shinko 705's on tomorrow. I'm glad you put this video out. When I first noticed the cupping I thought I had neglected to check tire pressure. I was happy to hear the tire simply reached it's end of life. I, like you, journal everything.

|The shinko 705s come in radial or bias ply. Bias ply having the higher weight rating but lower speed rating. Cupping can be postponed by raising tire pressure. The max rating is marked on the tire. The tire pressure marked on the swing arm is for legal reasons. running tires at their max pressure or close to it, prevents tire cupping as well as overheating of the tire and aids in its longevity. Urban Monk, you're videos are excellent and loaded with informative content.

Thanks for watching and for the kind words. Do you have any concerns about reducing the tire contact patch with higher tire pressures? I was thinking I'd like to try your idea but that popped into my head. I really like the idea of postponing the cupping.
@chrisarsenault40054 ай бұрын
@@UrbanMonkTV Even a half inflated tire has marginally a tad more of a contact patch, which disappears as speed increases. However, it is under braking that the front tire acquires its scalloped shape. Higher pressures limit the carcass flex in the tire which i turn keeps the heat down and prolongs longevity. Like yourself I have several high mileage bikes and a tire mounter and balancer. I've experimented with motorcycle tires for 25 years. Race bikes run lower pressures because they need to keep heat in the tires. Race tires also last hours not miles. Try maxing out your front tire. if its not your thing, go back to what you are used to. I mean a 705 is so cost effective. We could change them out every 10 thousand miles. I would love to sit and chat about bikes over a coffee. there really is no wrong answer. God speed!

I have a 2019 VStrom 1000XT with 27,000 miles. I used the OEM tires for the first 5,500 miles before switching to Dunlop TrailMaxMissions (TMM). I got 14,500 miles out of the first set of those and have about 7,000 miles currently on the second set. The reason I changed the first set of TMM was that I was doing a long road trip of about 4,000 miles and didn’t want to have to change tires mid trip. The front tire is amazing on both paved and gravel surfaces. The rear tire is pretty good also, but the profile goes from rounded to more flat or blocked despite having a lot of tread left. After about 10,000 miles you can get the rear to slip with hard acceleration out of a corner. You don’t feel it much except to note the bike’s traction control catches it (TC light flickers). My intent is to change my rear TMM in another 3,000 miles (10,000 miles total). I think I’ll be able to get close to 20,000 miles out of the current front TMM and will monitor it closely. 17,000 miles out of your Shinko 705 front is great.

I use the same make of tyre, but to be honest iv not had the same issues. Maybe because I'm not doing the consistently long runs in one year. Generally speaking, it takes me two to three years to clock up 17000 miles. I did a big tour round Europe one year and when I got back, it was the back tyre that had really bad cupping. I put it down to the weight I was carrying not to mention it was two's up. Very interesting content though. Thanks.

Hi urban , just while you are on the subject of type deprivation. Do you have a legal limit of tread while driving on the public highways? I seem to remember when you were doing the pines and fishing lines trip, you changed the rear tyre. It looked almost threadbare never mind cupping, or did it look worse than it was ? Over here in the uk , the legal limit is one and a half mm on the whole of the tyre. If you get pulled over by the cops with a tyre any less than that then it's point on your licence and a fine of £200, not to mention that the bike doesn't move on the public roads until the repair is done.

@@bobbyedal2737 We don't have any laws prohibiting thin tire tread. That wouldn't go over well here. Land of the Free and all that. Many states don't require wearing a helmet even, though California does.

Thanks for watching! I've gotten as high as 13k (commuting with only top box on) and as low as 8.5k (motocamping panniers on fully loaded in hot summer weather) with 705 rears. When you put the 705 front on, you'll likely feel the steering difference. The 705s have more mass (more rubber) on them and create a stronger gyroscopic force making turning feel heavier. You get used to it quickly though. Price and longevity make it worth it to me. I mention it in my review video of the 705s.

I feel the individual blocks of tread push down at the front when they contact the road-eventually leading to the saw tooth pattern (like wearing a shoe heel unevenly). Is it a directional tread ( arrow on side ) ? Reversing the rim/tire assembly direction of travel every oil change a possibility? Ever experiment w/ tire psi? Grabbing a piece of tire-marking crayon from an auto tire installer and making a line along the circumference-then running it a short distance on pavement to see if the full tread block hits the pavement or not? I know you like to get the most value and performance from your consumables. If you're sticking with Shinko on your next purchase that says a lot. P.S. when off road truck tires sing louder they are having the same cause/effect. Love your channel-bought my 04 DL1000 with pride and confidence because of you.

@@UrbanMonkTV When rotate auto tires uneven wear pattern will smooth out if "X" cross rotated-may take a few thousand miles. Worth a try on your next set.
@bobbyedal2737 Жыл бұрын
In theory , rotating a bike tyre sounds like a logical idea . Something I might try myself, just out of curiosity. The only thing that would worry me is that the rotation of the tyres are designed for one direction only,. You would have to consider the safety implications and the legality of doing it. You might prolong the life of the tyres by a few miles but the risks might far outweigh the advantages..

@@bobbyedal2737 Yeah, that would be an interesting experiment. These radial Shinkos are designed to spin in one direction and have arrows to indicate that.

Cupping / scalloping is a normal wear pattern for any dual sport / knobby style tires on asphalt. The more aggressive the tire, the more obvious the cupping will be. However, I believe you are making too much out of it, in regards to the tire being less effective at road holding ability. I have ridden on tires that were cupped far worse than that and never felt the performance loss was drastically affected. That being said, I have never seen the mileage you are getting out of a set of tires, probably because I ride fairly aggressively. I do agree with you on the 705s, I love the tire too...

@UrbanMonkTV Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I run 36 front and 36 rear (solo) 41 rear (with gear or pillion rider). Yes, the added mass of all that extra rubber in the 705s creates a stronger gyroscopic force making the lean feel different. I got used to it pretty quickly and changing front tires every 16k-23k is wonderful.

The short answer is...the geometry of telescoping suspension systems. Cantilevered suspensions like the system found on BMWs and newer Goldwings solve the problem. Thanks for watching!
