Another tip, after grinding both riveted pins flush to the plates there's no need to use the pressing tool at all, simply lever the plate off with 2 flat screw drivers or small pinch bar. I've replaced hundreds of chains both motorcycle and industrial and only use the tool for riveting the new master links.

Great videos. I am looking at a used 2006 V Strom 650 with 32K miles. Can you make any recommendations as to what to look for in a good used motorcycle, and if 32K is too many miles to have the Rotella make a significant difference?
@UrbanMonkTV
@UrbanMonkTV 25 күн бұрын
@@NHfreeenergy I've been thinking about how to answer your question as everyone comes into a potential bike purchase with different perspectives. From my perspective the purchase of any V-Strom that runs and goes down the road is a smart decision because the mantra "if it runs at all, it'll run forever" often applies to these machines. However, I see thos from the perspective of someone who can do his own maintenance and anything that does "break" on these bikes is almost always a "wear item" that is designed to wear out and be replaced. So, test ride, if it runs, anything "clunky" about it will be related to a wear item that can easily be replaced. From where I sit, a Strom with 36k on it is "like new." Be aware of known fueling issues with stock Strom of that era that are solved with a Power Commander (I mention this in my reviews of my bike). And my video on Rotella was not to say Rotella will perform better than other oils but rather to dispel doubts that it is worse than other more expensive oils. Thanks for watching!

Hi. My first time doing this was yesterday outside in the cold on a 428 chain. I was using the same tool, ground the heads with a Dremel - good, pushed the pins - good, tried using the 2 plates that came with the kit to push the master link together - bad, I may have bent the tool. The kit is rated for my chain, but the holes in the plate didn't line up with my pins. I was cold and pretty frustrated yesterday. Anyhow, watching how you pushed the plates togther with the large thread makes a lot of sense to me, after my experience, Thanks. Happy Saturday after Thanksgiving!

I got a 2007 Honda Rincon that I probably used a 12 pt socket on because it started rounding the edges off. Hopefully I stopped before I completely stripped it. I'm going to by a 6 pt socket and a good breaker bar and give it a try. Should I try with my M18 Milwaukee impact wrench and impact socket first?
@UrbanMonkTV
@UrbanMonkTV Ай бұрын
@@Jasonrcsd First, thanks for watching. Yes to the 6pt socket and I would caution against the impact wrench. The problem with them is that you get no "feel" from the bolt head when using them. I like a breaker bar because I can take it slow and feel whether the bolt head is stripping before I go too far. You can also try heating up the metal with a heat gun or by simply running the engine. Be careful not to melt rubber o-rings if you go the heat gun route.

Is 0-40w oil better than 80-90w oil? Great video.
@UrbanMonkTV
@UrbanMonkTV 2 ай бұрын
@@msromike123 First thanks for watching. To an engineer, oil is an integral component of the mechanical assemblage of an engine. The decision of which oil to include in the design of an engine (and that's the best way to think about I think) is almost like the deciding whether a bolt is made of aluminum or hardened steel - the specifications for the bolt are directly tied to the job the bolt is intended to do. Oil is the same. Engineers are very specific about which oil should be used in their engine design. They've done the complex math and considered all the possible variables. For that reason I'd say it is best to think of us owner/operators as having no choice on oil. Ok, maybe "no" choice is too narrow. "Little" choice is more accurate. We simply get to read the recommendations in the owners manual and choose an oil that fits those requirements. We deviate from them at our machine's peril. O-40W oil and 80-90W oil are about as different as an aluminum bolt and a hardened steel bolt - total different use cases. Hope that helps.

Do you have record of your first compression test results? I'm curious of what the compression looks like with little to no miles. I am also assuming if compression gets too low you would be able to rebuild the motor.
@UrbanMonkTV
@UrbanMonkTV 2 ай бұрын
First, thank you for watching! This particular bike was purchased at an auction that I was not present for, so I did not get a chance to do a compression test before purchasing. The bike had 2300 miles on it at that time. It ran perfectly so I did not bother to do a compression test so, no, I don't have a baseline measurement for my machine. I did do a previous long term review at 50,000 in which I took the compression measurements. That 50k review video can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKWzpn1_bbSUobM . I also did another at 85k: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWbIlmmphbSClcU . Yes, these engines can be "rebuilt," but the cylinders are not pure steel like in older bikes. They have nikasil plating that I don't believe can be honed and used again. The cylinders would simply need to be replaced by new ones.

Cupping / scalloping is a normal wear pattern for any dual sport / knobby style tires on asphalt. The more aggressive the tire, the more obvious the cupping will be. However, I believe you are making too much out of it, in regards to the tire being less effective at road holding ability. I have ridden on tires that were cupped far worse than that and never felt the performance loss was drastically affected. That being said, I have never seen the mileage you are getting out of a set of tires, probably because I ride fairly aggressively. I do agree with you on the 705s, I love the tire too...

You missed the most important step. Measure the with of the other links so you match it when you press the plate on. If you press it to far together you will crush the o-rings and you have to start over. Other than that it was a good video
@UrbanMonkTV

The pins (the part that runs through the bushing) on the chains I use have a graduation or "step" in them that don't allow the plate to be pressed together to a point that would crush the o-ring. So overtightening the tool isn't possible. Perhaps there are some chains out there that do not have this and allow for an overtightening and I'm just not familiar with them.
