As a kid, this scene was thrilling. Now as an aircraft engineer... Why the hell is the plane still on takeoff speed when landed?? Where are all the brakes?? The pilots would have already set FULL autobrakes AND feet on the floor working the brake pedals! Where are the thrust reversers?? No, 1:52 is the SPEED BRAKES. SPOILERS. It's automatically deployed when the plane hits the ground. It won't cause the plane to veer off the runway! The plane has enough fuel to fly from Germany (here in this scene) to Kazakhstan. With that much fuel 2:38 it would not have been able to lift off. It'd ram the C5 Galaxy Tenerife style! That is, the engines have not ingested enough FOD, trucks, personnel on the ground.

It’s hard to believe this iconic soundtrack was created in only 2 weeks, a last minute addition
@GenericGoogleAccount2 жыл бұрын
That's within the typical time frame that film composers have to complete their score, two weeks to three months with the average time being 6 weeks. So film composers basically have the natural talent and ability to turn motion picture into music in a spontaneous way, all while having centuries worth of material from the classical repertoire to inspire themselves from (a lot of film scores have stylistic similarities to late 19th century and early 20th century classical music). For example, Jerry Goldsmith, who composed for this film, cited Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Miklós Rózsa, Bernard Herrmann, Béla Bartók, and Alban Berg as influences through his career.
@Forge172 жыл бұрын
@@GenericGoogleAccount according to the articles I read on Jerry goldsmith and his skill at producing this iconic score in 2 weeks, composers typical have around 4-6 months to compose a full soundtrack alongside post production. Goldsmith is talented, but the creation of a successful original soundtrack is an enormous task for all artists, making this masterpiece all the more astounding.

This entire movie is completely unreal. Yes, I know it’s a movie. But in reality there isn’t an AF1 pilot alive who in same situation with having touched down and into reverse thrust wouldn’t have buried the nose in the ground the second the cabin was breached, ending the movie.

I wish they made an alternate scene in which the plane successfully landed, leading to the plane being breached and the hijackers being quickly killed. But of course the plane would have actually landed anyway since the plastic explosive wouldn’t have detonated in real life due to it only being possible to explode if smaller explosives were used to trigger it.

True. The movie would be just like a TV Series with a "To be continued" at the end and you have to wait a week to see what happened. And mainly in real life, Air Force One is a more modified plane to take off faster than commercial jets because it has to get the President out of tighter and dangerous situations to where you see, it was able to take off with limited length of tarmac left.

There's a billion things the pilots could have done. Judging by their expressions they were feet on the floor working the manual brakes. But for some the reasons (movie logic, of course) the plane didn't slow down at all and remain at takeoff speed (despite thrust levers at freaking IDLE)! They could have just pull out the fire handles on all 4 engines and the APU?? All while the aircraft is braking?? That would basically gun the entire aircraft and makes it super difficult for Gary Oldman to start her up again. And there are backup braking systems so braking will still work even when there's no power. When I first saw this movie as a 10 year old I fell in love with planes, especially the 747. 20 years on I've become an aircraft technician and scenes like these became irritating to watch...

I was originally thinking he could just flip the fuel cutoff switches or pull and turn the fire handles. But... no fuel = no thrust. no thrust = no thrust reversers. The brakes probably could have handled the load. But they'd be red hot by the time they came to a complete stop.

Especially a veteran Colonel at the controls would have known all of this. But, like they said in the movie "if we land, we're finished!"

@@zekeigtos7240 Given Air Force One is landing in Germany on a journey intended for the US, I would think the 747 is loaded with a lot of fuel and thus landing with intend to damage could potentially cause a massive fire and killed many on board. Just look at the Trans World Airlines Flight 843 incident, they only got to V1 and aborted the take off at 16ft when the a false stall warning caused them to decide to land back on the runway. The result was a puncture to the fuel tank which resulted in the right engine ingesting fuel and causing a large fire. They were only saved from overrunning the runway because forward undercarriage failed but the plane was quickly destroyed by the fire after the evacuation. If there are shots fire on Air Force One, they might not be able to evacuate in under 2 minutes like TWA 843 did and thus they could end up killing half the US administration if the pilots deliberated tried to damage the plane. Their duty as pilots is not to kill the terrorists but to save the lives of the people on board. If there are shots fired on board, they have no idea if one of the many fuel tanks has been punctured by gunfire, so attempting any kind of sabotaged landing could potentially kill everyone on board.

@@Edax_Royeaux well it is just a movie. I will say that I have talked to real pilots of the KC-46 who have told me this scene is ridiculous. Fuel also had nothing to do with it, the plane could have been disabled by clicking various controls to lock the landing gear or land the plane then collapse the gear into the under-carriage. As it turns out, the terrorist somehow manages to take off again anyway even with speed brakes on and flaps at 30 degrees, which is impossible. They had to get it back in the air because of the plot, so there we are.

@@zekeigtos7240 I agree there wouldn't have been no way for the terrorist to take off regardless. From what I've heard, collapsing the gear into the under-carriage while the plane is on the ground will cause so much damage, the plane becomes a write-off. That's potentially a billion dollar plane being thrown away unnecessarily.

They should have cut the engine off on final

Good idea but engines have very important braking system

If they did reverse thrust can’t be used then.

I agree with Mythical Tyrant. The thrust reversers wouldn't be able to deploy then. The wheel brakes probably could have handled the load. But they'd be glowing red hot once the plane came to a complete stop
