Would require the hull surface to be etched to hold the air bubbles in order to provide the hydrophobic properties and fouling would disrupt this behaviour rather quickly. You might have a better chance at using ultrasound to encourage hydrophobic properties retention.

Jan C Chacin L The water density does not go down, correctly speaking. Let us take a volume of 1m3. If this volume is full of water, the mean density will be rho= 1000kg/m3. Now, if the volume contains 50% of air, the mean density will be the average : rho= 1000 (water density)*0,5 + 1,2 (air density)*0,5= 500 kg/m3 Let us calculate the archimedes force :F=rho*g*V (volume of the hull in the water) You see, this force is proportionnal to the density. Hence, if air is injected rho is going to diminish and so does archimedes force. This means that the force exerted by the water onto the boat will be smaller and the boat is going to be further in the water. However, if you take a look at the drag force : F drag = a coefficient*rho*V^2*S. The drag force is also a function of the density. Therefor, by lowering the density, you can reduce the drag force and move faster. So, on one hand you increase the speed, but on the other hand the boat sinks a bit.
