Air Purification Tests - This is Who I Trust!
Hello and Welcome To Tier #1 on my Air Purifier Industry SOURCE RANKINGS list - which contains the most trustworthy source for air filtration testing. OK, in the last video I explained why KZbin Channels and Blogs with at least some dedication to testing and analyzing air purification equipment, are at Tier #2 in our listing of sources. And below them would be the Peer Reviewed Studies in Tier #3 - and they are above the hit or miss General Influencers in Tier #4… And the The General Influencers - even with all their flaws - are still, more trustworthy, in general, than the NOT TO BE TRUSTED Business Owners in Tier #5… Now, we are at the highest Tier… and in Tier #1 we have ….
Tier 1:
Professional, Expert 3rd Party Testing Labs. All the other sources from Tier 2 to Tier 5, I would consider to be Amateur testers.. But Tier 1 companies are Professional testers…
Here are some of the characteristics of the Professional Expert 3rd Party Testing Labs:
They use more expensive, more precise, testing equipment and specialized software…
They have years and even decades of air filtration testing experience.
They get paid thousands of dollars by companies - even Fortune 500 companies to do testing on their products and sometimes they even test solutions that will be used by the department of defense and/or even NASA.
They can accurately test filtration concentrations for UFP. And UFP are smaller particles that are .1 to .003 microns in size and they comprise 90% of all the particles in the air we breathe and they are also the most dangerous to us, as well. So, that’s obviously a very important variable to consider.
And some Professional 3rd party testing labs can also accurately test for VOCs and Chemicals, as well, which is very difficult and expensive.
And these Professional 3rd party testing labs are conducting air filtration tests on equipment on a daily basis, week in and week out for years on end as this is exclusively what they do in their profession… And therefore, they would be considered experts in the air filtration testing industry.”
Air Purification Tests - This is Who I Trust
OK… So, those are some of the characteristics of Professional testers in the air filtration industry… That said, there ARE 2 different categories within this Tier.
Category #1 consists of Honest, Trustworthy, 3rd Party Testing Labs who cannot be bribed into providing undeserved testing results. In Short, they are honest, and they have integrity. Their mothers raised them well.
And then, we have Category #2:
Which consists of LESS Reputable 3rd party testing labs who CAN be bribed to create undeserved testing results to make an air purifier or filter appear to perform better than it actually does. JPEG - make them an offer they can’t resist
Now, we won’t go into this too much but just so you know - not ALL filters or air purifiers that are EN1822 certified deserve their certifications, or the test results that they attribute to their solutions… some don’t deserve the certification or test results because the filter company basically paid for superior testing results that they didn’t earn. So, if you see a specific certification on a filter or air purifier - it may, or may NOT, actually be legit.
Unfortunately, This is the world we live in. And there is a reason why the Bible says, “For the love of money is the root of all evil”. Some labs will give air filter manufacturers the testing results they want for the right amount of money. I mean, just think about it, when Millions of dollars are on the line - some companies will come up with creative ways to try to gain an edge, for sure…and let’s be real - that’s true in many different industries - not just the air filtration industry.
And, I could tell, over the past few years that some air purifier companies had some Amazing official performance test results, from 3rd party labs, but by analyzing the units and their seals - I was sometimes thinking to myself - Yeah, I don’t think this unit is going to filter at the levels the 3rd party testing lab claims… so, I’ve actually kinda known this for a while, now… but, eventually, I had a 3rd party testing lab confirm my suspicions - and they said that they KNEW, some other 3rd party labs were rigging tests for some customers…. So, unfortunately, it IS a thing in the industry and I don’t like it any more than you do, but I’m just letting you know what’s going on.

Yeah, wouldn't it be GREAT! I talked with an air purifier manufacturer a year ago and they said very few 3rd party labs... in the WORLD - can currently, accurately test for Ultrafine particles... so I think, it will be a while before an accurate and affordable air quality tester will hit the consumer market that can show us these levels... but, someday it will have to happen. Thank you!👍

i just came out with an idea. i added a carbon filter to my computer, so becomes air purifier. i don't believe this activated carbon is that contaminated after half a year of use so i give it a second life. better than nothing. i hold it in place with foam for pressure. the computer already has a mesh, and a year ago i added another thiner mesh of stainless steel 0.026mm hole thickness holded with 4 neodymium magnets. this computer is placed at the height of our head, in a built in wardrobe for noise insulation. i drilled 2 tom & erry holes at 2 walls so i can enjoy music inside the room and the computer thanks to 12 meters long cables remains outside with its noisy motors. i realized that a board underneath would increase the noise like an acoustic guitar, and that the board got hot and was obstacle for air flow, same as tables overheat with portable computer, but this is a desktop. so my computer is at tall, vertiginous, i placed 2 wooden slats over perpendicular to 2 slats that already were screwed at the sides, over the clothes hangers. this way there is 1.80 meters underneath for fresh air. the space is smaller than a london telephone cabin so in the gap between the computer and the slats there is room for the carbon filter because the feet of computer is taller. this is killing 2 birds with one shot.

I have 2 AP40 PRO and 1 AP80 Pro from the german company "Ideal", but I have no idea if these actually help at all. When they automstically change to red (max fan power), they often go straight to green (lowest fan power) when you interrupt it with turning it off and on again. So it does seem kinda fishy

Thank you so much for the content! I have a question for you, please. Someone is putting in pot lights in my office in the basement. Drywall is being cut, and I am seeing the white dust all around. There’s no ventilation in the basement, so is buying an air filter a good idea to help get all the dust out? If so, I’m seeing lots of contrary information. Are you able to help point me in a direction for an air filter in a basement office?

Thank you for your questions. 1) "There’s no ventilation in the basement, so is buying an air filter a good idea to help get all the dust out?" A: Buying an air purifier is a good idea to help you breathe better in your space but it will not "get all the dust out". No air purifier will be able to collect all the dust and prevent it from hitting the ground and needing to be vacuumed up. 2) "Are you able to help point me in a direction for an air filter in a basement office?" A: Sure, I will ask you some questions in your comment on the other video.

I've watched a ton of your videos and perused your website but I still don't have an answer to the all important question: What 3rd party certification can I rely on when purchasing an air purifier and replacmeents filters that tells me that it is actually filtering to a hepa level? I want to buy a budget winix but its hard to find what size particle their filtering goes down to, or if the aham testing is truly 3rd party or an association of manufacturers. Even some of the top brands that i do genuinely believe can have honest test results like IQAir just say they have some independent lab tests that prove their claims on their website, without any info or reference to those tests. You are right it is the wild west out here, and since a more unified test and certification industry or processes are years away if ever on the horizon, it would be nice to get your insight on this. I cant even find and any info on if winix filters and purifiers are even actually filtering ultrafine particles in the sizes that make up 90% of the dangerous particles in the air to us. Very frustrating but I appreciate you giving your help. Do you think you will tackle this topic in a future video? Thanks again.
@AirPurificationEducation
@AirPurificationEducation Ай бұрын
Thank you for your questions. 1) "What 3rd party certification can I rely on when purchasing an air purifier and replacmeents filters that tells me that it is actually filtering to a hepa level?" I think air purification solutions will filter particles at different levels depending on various factors: A) The speed the fans are run at (the higher the speed - the more air exchanges in the space but also typically, the less effectively the unit will filter particles)... B) How much dust and debris is clogging the filters... (most units filter particles worse as the filters get more and more clogged).... C) How good the seal is between the HEPA filter and the inside of the air purifiers.... This becomes more of an important issue as the HEPA gets more clogged over time. D) There are some other issues as well but these are 3 foundational issues.... So, there isn't a single specific test that tells us everything about an air purifiers performance, IMO. EN1822 tests can be insightful but it depends on who is doing the testing... one 3rd party testing lab has done EN1822 testing for 3 air purifier companies and says all 3 have units that filter .003 microns at 100%, lol! Yeah, I HIGHLY doubt that is accurate. There is a newer test out of China, I believe, called CCM which is much more stringent than AHAM's current CADR test as it focuses moreso on how the units perform over time... which is much more relevant than the super short 20 minute test AHAM currently conducts on new units with brand new filters. The IQAir HealthPro Plus was the first mass produced consumer air purifier that was EN1822 certified - many years ago... and it is one of the few that has been CCM certified, as well... and they say they scored very well on the CCM test... I want to eventually see the results... but I do trust them - at this point. 2) "I want to buy a budget winix but its hard to find what size particle their filtering goes down to, or if the aham testing is truly 3rd party or an association of manufacturers." Winix has been CADR tested through AHAM so their units are 3rd party lab tested for the CADR issue: www.ahamdir.com/room-air-cleaners/ The particle filtration in the Winix units will become less effective the dirtier the filters get as the Winix units do not have high level seals inside the units. But, the Winix 5500 is a good unit for $150 or so. 3) “i do genuinely believe can have honest test results like IQAir just say they have some independent lab tests that prove their claims on their website, without any info or reference to those tests.” Filtech Laboratories in Switzerland performed the EN1822 tests on the IQAir HealthPro Plus. 4) “I cant even find and any info on if winix filters and purifiers are even actually filtering ultrafine particles in the sizes that make up 90% of the dangerous particles in the air to us.” The Winix air purifiers will not be great for UFP filtration because they don’t have high level seals inside the units… among other issues. 5) If you are looking for a “less expensive” air purifier that may possibly do a decent job on UFP filtration - my best guess at this time would be the TruSens Z-3000: www.trusens.com/p/air-purifiers/z-3000-large-air-purifier-with-air-quality-monitor-z3000ap/ It has a DuPont HEPA filter that is EN1822 certified by one of the 3rd party labs that tested some IQAir units + it has the best seal between the HEPA filter and the inside of the unit - that I’ve seen - for a less than $400 solution. So, I’d guess that may possibly be one of the better options under $500. 6) “Do you think you will tackle this topic in a future video?” My next video will be on CADR and some of the issues surrounding it… I think I’m gonna introduce the CCM testing topic/methodology, as well…. I think the VAST majority of units that perform well on the CADR test will do poorly on the CCM test. And at some point I’d like to “out” the 3rd party lab that I think may be providing rigged EN1822 test results but I don’t wanna get sued, lol! 😆 And I don’t have 100% proof - I just “know/think” their test results are “rigged”... as there is no way those units are hitting those numbers… Not even an $1,800 IQAir Cleanroom unit is filtering better than 99.5% at .003 microns… So, 100% at .003 microns?!?! Come on now… So, I think I kinda gotta be careful on this topic. 7) All that said, I still think my UFP filtration list stands in the order it does… and these are the units I trust the most for UFP filtration: airpurificationeducation.com/best-air-purifiers-for-ultrafine-particles/ I think you’ve already seen it - and it is a short list… and does not contain inexpensive units… but… Anyhow, Happy New Year! 👍

@@Gowithderflow Thank you for the question. I think you posted the same question a few days ago as I got an email on it but KZbin was not letting me find it in my comments section for some reason - so, I couldn't respond. Yes, I have a Z-3000 and their smallest unit sitting in boxes downstairs... I'm gonna try to open them and get them up and running within the next week - along with an Airpura V414 that should hopefully be arriving tomorrow - famous last words, lol! I will be adding both to my Best Air Purifier 2025 list video/content when it comes out - hopefully, within the next 2-3 months. Yeah, the pricing on the Airmega 400 is great and I think the Z-3000 is better than the Winix 5500 and the Coway Mighty for particle filtration... and in positioning it in comparison to the Coway 400 - I'd say this... The 400 is supposed to get about 4 air exchanges an hour, in 780 sq. ft. w/ 8 ft. ceilings. And the Z-3000 is supposed to get 4 in about 375 sq. ft. So, it appears the 400 has about double the airflow... but the Z-3000 has a much better seal between the HEPA and the inside of the unit. So, if I have about 400 sq. ft. - Currently, I'm gonna go with the Z-3000 because 3 months down the road - the unit will be filtering particles better than the 400 even though, the 400 can get more air exchanges. If the space is over 400 sq. ft. - I'd currently, probably go with the 400 for particle filtration as the Z-3000 will start to become more and more "undersized" the further we go from 400 sq. ft., IMO. For VOC/odors - the 400 is superior as it has a lot more carbon than the Z-3000. And if we are trying to filter smoke or VOCs/chemicals/odors - I'm therefore, going with the 400 regardless of room size. So, that is how I currently would compare them to each other. 👍

1) In Switzerland, I think you should be able to get an IQAir GC unit - with 12 lbs. of carbon and that should fix it, for sure. 2) The Oransi carbon solutions may/may not be able to solve your issue... I think their "carbon specific" units have more carbon than most lower level units but not a ton of it. 3) If you are willing to spend about $400 for shipping - you can get an Airpura V400 which is much smaller than a GC unit but comes with 8 lbs. of carbon and it also filters particles better than the GC as it comes with a HEPA filter, so you get the best of both worlds. GC does not filter at a HEPA level. It comes out of Canada. www.airpura.com/products/v400-vocs-and-chemicals-good-for-wildfires-air-purifier?_pos=2&_sid=5d360cd48&_ss=r Coupon Code DZAIR10 would get you 10% off on it. I think it will be less expensive than the GC unit even with the international shipping. The GC costs $1,400 in the US but IDK what you guys pay for it in Switzerland. So, those are a few options, I think - thank you and Good Luck!👍

@@AirPurificationEducation Thanks a bunch for you suggestions, I will take some time to explore them. What the guy from Oransi says its different in their carbon specific offerings is that the design of the filter makes it so its more concentrated and that gets a smaller quantity of carbon to perform like units which have 10 and more lbs. You can find a video here on yt of the CEO explaining it. I honestly don't have the expertise to discern if thats marketing only or if there is something about it. I will consider the other two options, thanks a lot for your suggestions. I don't think we get the GC for less of a price here unfortunately, a quick research shows 1700CHF which is steep.

@@zephyr1241-tablet OK - the opinions I present below will have different pricing since you are in Switzerland and an Airpura would have to be shipped to you for probably around $400 - that said - I looked at a few things on the Internet to provide a better opinion on the Oransi solution: ***************************************************** Here are a few of my initial opinions on the Oransi TrueCarbon solution after just a little online research - I’ve never sold the units nor used them. Here is a video from Peter Mann - the president of Oransi made on the carbon air purifiers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4apaIaMo6t8q5I&ab_channel=Oransi He mentioned filtration for Formaldehyde, Ammonia, Toluene, limonene and Heptane… The test results are from Intertek - a 3rd party testing facility - so that is good for being a reputable testing source - to the best of my knowledge. The most powerful unit - the 270C product page, says it has 3.2 lbs. of carbon with potassium permanganate. IQAir, Airpura and Austin Air have units with this in their carbon, as well, but they possess much more carbon + much better particle filtration. And Airpura utilizes other additives in their carbon, as well. He says the carbon filter is 2 inches thick and the thickness of the filter is an important component of odor/chemical filtration - and I don’t disagree but, Airpura has 3 inch carbon filters and the IQAir HealthPro Plus has about 4-5 inches of carbon for air to go through at various points in the carbon filter… So, I agree, thicker carbon is generally better for odor/chemical filtration - airflow, will also play a big role, as well, and quality of carbon and the additives in the carbon, as well. In general, I NEVER trust the opinions/test results of Business Owners/employees in the air purification industry. Like I say in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJaqkmxmmptoiac&ab_channel=AirPurificationEducation That said - Oransi used Intertek for the testing which is definitely a plus, over other companies doing their own “independent” tests. And That said, the filter did get tested for some chemicals but there is no comparison between it and other higher end carbon solutions like IQAir, Airpura or Austin… and Allerair. He compares his TrueCarbon solutions to the Winix 5500-2 which is like most all low end air filtration solutions - they don’t have much carbon and are not good for VOCs/odor filtration. So, he’s comparing his solution to the lowest options on the market, IMO. He says they have a filter with 14 lbs. of carbon but I don’t see it on their website. All 3 of the TrueCarbon solutions appear to only have 3.2 lbs. of carbon - and the difference between the 3 different units only seems to be their coverage of different sized spaces… so they must come with different powered fan solutions but the actual carbon replacement filter is the same for all 3 of the different units it appears - according to their website. oransi.com/collections/airmend-replacement-filters I think there are 2 options for this product line: **We can either get an AirMend air purifier with ONLY a HEPA filter (no carbon) or **A TrueCarbon Filter with ONLY a carbon filter but no HEPA filter. **And the Prefilter ONLY works for the HEPA option. If this is true - this is bad for several reasons: A) The TrueCarbon units will not perform any particle filtration. B) If there isn’t a prefilter on the Carbon solution - the filters will get clogged prematurely with dust/debris - ya gotta have a prefilter! C) If they don’t have a HEPA filter coming after the Carbon filter then carbon dust/debris can enter the air we breathe… that is why IQAir, Airpura, Austin Air etc. ALL put the HEPA filter after the carbon component. This is not a good arrangement, IMO. ***In this video, Peter talks about air filtration and mold and musty smells in basements. I’ve sold dehumidifiction solutions for basements for 15 years and I have dealt with thousands of customers. IMO, he is basically trying to get folks to buy his solutions for “musty” odors and he DOES mention dehumidifiers for basements… but in my experience if you keep the relative humidity below 60% (he says down to 30% but you need a special desiccant dehumidifer for this)... You don’t get any mold or musty odors so… folks would not need to buy a HEPA air purifier or carbon solution, either… IMO, he’s just trying to “introduce” the idea of buying his solutions for this application but I almost NEVER sold an air purifier on top of a dehumidifier for basements/musty issues (like not even 1% of the time)... He is kinda being a little sneaky in this video, IMO. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIOXqKtoZrdrhqM&ab_channel=Oransi CONCLUSION: GASKETS on Filters: I don’t see any gaskets on the filters (carbon or HEPA) so that is not a good thing. SEAL: From what I see in one of the pictures on their site: oransi.com/products/truecarbon-270c-air-purifier There does not appear to be a good seal between the HEPA filter and the inside of the air purifier, at all. So, dirty air will escape around the filtes as the filters get more clogged. WALL MOUNT CAPABILITY: I do like this option. I think it could possibly be a decent solution for bathrooms in businesses with the wall mount capability. The Oransi carbon solution IS less expensive than the solutions the upper end air purifier brands present… and I definitely expect it to filter odors/VOCs better than lower end units like the Winix 5500, etc. but the lack of a Prefilter and HEPA filter in the Carbon solution concerns me. That said, I’d take my chances with one of the Oransi carbon solutions over breathing in 2nd hand smoke… So, I think they may be useful solutions in certain situations/environments but... A TrueCarbon 270C is $383 but we can get an Airpura R400 for $500 with 8 lbs. Of carbon (60% more carbon) and it comes with... **a prefilter to prevent the HEPA and carbon from clogging with debris. **a True HEPA filter so it will be VASTLY superior for particle filtration than the Oransi offering. **the HEPA filter comes after the Carbon so we won't be breathing in the carbon... **Plus, the unit is Steel (not plastic) and... **It has the same motor as the Austin Air big units - so, it gets about 4 air exchanges in 500 sq. ft. **Warranty - Airpura = 5 years, The Oransi warranty = 2 years but it appears to be void outside of the US: oransi.com/blogs/blog/warranty?hsa_acc=6600833459&hsa_cam=2023907165&hsa_grp=&hsa_ad=&hsa_src=x&hsa_tgt=&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gad_source=1 Plus, with coupon code DZAIR10 - and a 10% discount, the R400 solution is only $450… **so we’d get ALL that for only 15% more. There is just NO comparison, IMO. Switzerland prices WILL VARY, unfortunately, - esp. international shipping, LOL! 😆 If you do go with the Oransi carbon solution - please give me feedback on how it works for you as I value real world feedback from customers - thanks!👍

@AirPurificationEducation
@AirPurificationEducation 22 күн бұрын
Thank you for your question. 1) HEPA 14 and HEPA 13 possess different levels of filtration. 2) True HEPA: If someone says "True HEPA" - that means the filter is supposed to filter at 99.97% at .3 microns. 3) People in the industry throw the word "HEPA" around a lot but 99%+ of the HEPA air purifiers on the market do not actually filter at a True HEPA level. There are some variables involved as to what makes an air purifier filter well. The filter inside of the unit is just one of the variables. If there is not a high level seal between the HEPA filter and the inside of the air purifier - dirty air will leak around the filter...

@AirPurificationEducation Out of all the options I sent you, which one should I choose? The one I’m considering purchasing mentions "Particle retention size - 0.3 microns" in its product specifications on Amazon, which has made me hesitant. ( IT LITERALLY HAD HEPA 14).On the other hand, the one I mentioned as the "#1 best seller in India" (Coway Air Purifier) claims to have a TRUE HEPA filter (or HEPA 13, I’m not sure). Its product specifications state "Particle retention size - 0.1 microns." How is this possible? Could you please help me decide which one is better? Thank you! Related How do I choose between a HEPA filter with a 0.3 micron retention size and one with a 0.1 micron retention size What are the benefits of a TRUE HEPA filter compared to a standard HEPA filter Are there any specific brands known for having the best HEPA filters How does the particle retention size affect the overall performance of an air purifier What should I look for in product specifications when choosing an air purifier

@@PratibhaKaradbhajne The manufaturer's "marketing" and "product specifications" on how well their air purifiers or filters will filter are NOT trustworthy most of the time. Therefore, you would have to show me the 2 units you are choosing from. In General, Coway is pretty good for the money.

Don't put too much trust into anyone that calls themselves an "Air Quality Expert" on KZbin. They are just people hoping to grow their KZbin channel by providing entertaining or controversial content. Actual Experts are not on KZbin.

Thank you for your comment. I would agree with some of your statements - but not all of them. 1) Yes, I currently believe that there is no such thing as a generic/broad "Air Quality Expert", on or off of KZbin, period. As there are too many niches/topics under the "Air Quality" umbrella for anyone to be an "expert" in all of them. 2) There is no such thing as an "Air Purifier Expert" (for residential stand alone solutions), either, IMO. As there are simply too many stand alone air purification solutions on the market for anyone to have extensive experience with all of them. Plus, there are new solutions hitting the market every month. Therefore, I position myself as an "Air Purification Consultant with 17 years of Experience" and a "Student" of the industry and I am comfortable with both of these labels. I don't know everything about all the solutions on the market. But, I definitely know more than most and I've got a very high success rate with my consultation suggestions. So, I decided to get on YT/social media. And I have helped many people around the world select the best filtration solutions their budgets will allow - depending on what equipment is available at their location(s). 3) There are "Air Quality Experts" in certain niches on KZbin like “Mold Experts”. So, yes, there are Mold Experts on KZbin who talk about how to best test for it. Plus, there are "Mold Remediation Experts" on KZbin, as well. There are also other “Air Quality Testing Experts” and “HVAC Experts” who I would consider to be experts in their respective niches, on KZbin/Social Media, etc. And there are also some filtration manufacturers on KZbin like Camfil and some European Filter manufacturers, as well, who have KZbin channels and I would consider them to be experts at making industrial air filtration solutions (as they are also experts at testing, as well, so they are high level). So again, yeah, there currently ARE some “Air Quality Experts” on KZbin/Social Media - but, they are in certain niches. 4) I am actually going to make a video on this very subject as I have seen people on social media with master’s degrees and even PhD’s in engineering…. and even “scientists” - who say they are “Air Quality Experts” and “experts” at recommending air purification solutions. Yet, I see them oftentimes provide very poor recommendations. Unfortunately, many people seem to trust their opinions due to their educational levels but…. that does not seem to be helping them much, lol! 😆 I hope that all made sense - Thank you! 👍
