I was asked by a farmer friend if i could help keep the wood pigeons and corvids off his crop of barley as he had managed to cut one field but couldn't cut anything more until the weather picked up again and the birds were helping themselves to the crop in the mean time.
This is all done on farm land that i have permission to do so on with legally held air rifles and is done in a legal and humane manner as not to prolong or glorify the death of the birds.
This can legally be done through the Department Of Agriculture, Environment And Rural Affairs Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985 (As Amended) Licence.
This Licence hereby authorises for the purpose of preventing the spread of disease and preventing serious damage to livestock, foodstuffs for livestock, crops, vegetables, fruit, growing timber and fisheries ANY AUTHORISED PERSON to kill or take any of the following birds:-
Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie, Pigeon (Wood), Pigeon (Feral), Rook
Rifle BSA Super10 John Bowkett Blueprinted .22cal 15ft/lb
Scope Nikko Stirling Targetmaster 4-16x44 LRX
Pellets JSB Diabolo Exact 15.9 Grain
Tactacam 5.0 and FTS unit
Equifix Shooting Bags Dutch Bag

I absolutely love decoying with the air rifle. I watched a load of your videos and got the bushwear hide and can now happily take 10+ woodies per session. Thanks for such helpful videos. I'd love to see more on carrion crows and how to decoy those as I struggle to get them to land.

Great video. Just a thought for you about the wind. If you look at it like a clock face and 12 o’clock is straight ahead and the wind was coming from about 8 o’clock pushing you to the right. The angle will change if you are shooting to your left or right (say aiming 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock). So shooting towards 2 o’clock you will almost have only a tail wind and aiming at 10 o’clock you will have full value and obviously need more hold. See what I mean. You will need 3 sticks next time you go out in the wind. We are over run with Magpies- keep it up.
@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 8 ай бұрын
Yes i see what you mean and it would explain a lot too. If i mind right the wind was coming from behind and the left with the hedge sheltering me as the wind was blowing strongly in the field but hardly moving the hide.

Hi David. Absolutely love your content/commentary. I do a good bit of varmint hunting (mainly squirrels and crows) in east Tennessee. Looking at the grass, the wind was changing direction and so missed shots are explainable. Perhaps a piece of natural looking dark green/buff brown garden hemp twine stuck into a notch at the top of your stick would help as an indicator.
@HuntersVermin

I started the day with some grass in that notch but it wasn't long till the wind had blown it away, twine would have been better.

One of the tricks I was told when shooting with a tricky cross wind is to aim at the left hand edge of the kill zone when the wind is from left to right, as in your case. If you hadn't noticed that the wind had dropped a bit you are still in the kill zone but I expect you know this trick. As always another most enjoyable video.
@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 8 ай бұрын
It is good advice, i just couldn't understand why i could hit my range marker stick at 30 yards in the wind yet struggle to hit birds at 20 yards or so.

Excellent video, but given the wind conditions would your 22RF not have been more appropriate?
@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 8 ай бұрын
My 30ft/lb + FX crown would have been a better chose but the 22 rim fire might have been a bit much for shots at 10 to 20 yards, though i would like to try decoying pigeons to the rim fire some time if i ever get land suitable for it.

Crackin video - I really appreciate the fact you show all your shots - they show the reality of field work, plus you absolutely nailed it at the end... Well done for persevering, what with it being so windy and running out of air, some may have called it a day much earlier. I often wonder how long you're shooting for to get such good numbers? Any chance you'll let us behind the 4th wall? 😆 Cheers! Rich.

Great little hide you have there! Could you show more inside the hide how you have the rifle and rest and of outside the hide when you have the gun sticking through. A vid of how you make your bird cradles would be good, the size of wire you use too would be handy. It makes them look more alive and I would like to make some! No farting this time!
