I filmed this just after Halloween last year and to be honest if i hadn't off messed up on the last magpie i would have kept the film for another DVD as there was some very nice footage from two points of view, but that's hunting and filming for you.
Rifle Weihrauch HW97 .177cal 12.6ft/lb
Scope MTC mamba lite 3 12x44 scb
Pellet .177cal H&N FTT
Hide (The Bush) chair hide.

I like the " Old technology ",comment. Spring rifles are every bit as good as PCP guns in the right hands. No need for oxygen bottles and all the hundreds of pounds worth of equipment required to use them. I own a AA ProSport in fac .177 which takes rabbits, crows, etc with body shots well out past 50 yards, no bother. Give me a quality spring gun any day over all those over priced and over rated PCP guns.

Terry Wright I have to agree as a well sorted spring air rifle is a pleasure to shoot without having to worry about how many shots you've taken or how much of a charge is in the tank.

I don't know how we managed before PCP rifles, with all these main spring failures and weakenings. When I was a kid I owned a BSA Meteor. 177, I used it every day for years, never serviced, never oiled, I didn't know about cleaning barrels and well abused it. It's still in my gun cabinet and still work's as good as it did the first time I used it, that's 37 years ago. OK I have cleaned it now and lubricated it, but I know that if I needed a gun to shoot a magpie in the garden, this would still do the job as good as any thousand pound PCP.

Terry Wright I agree as i have had little problems with my pcp's now and again while the springer is much more reliable even though it did break a spring once.

David as another gentleman mentioned in the comments magpies know a decoy to be dead or false, in my own experience this is quite true, however I got around that by setting out a nest of eggs, little rubber eggs and crack a couple of bantams eggs with them to simulate a clutch of pheasant eggs, I also made myself a little trough with some cheap coarse breakfast cereal I got at Lidl, I gave them a free day then attacked the next day, my hide is permanent, really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!
@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 6 жыл бұрын
Yes very good, i've used a fake nest made from raffia and delf eggs which worked a treat. Before i got the pop up chair hide i used permanent hides all the time and they worked very well if you can keep them well maintained.

Daniel Martin, he doesn't like taking those shots because he's not sure of the range, you have to get a range then get the proper holdover, and maybe being 50-100 yards out with a wind, it gets difficult to gauge without wind socks and such.

Good Vid again Davy, might be a good idea not sure but if the Magpies are in the frame ...off to slight left/right and can still be seen when your shooting instead of moving the cam so Magpie is centred just take the shot, Saves time and we'll all see it happen and you'll get more of them..I know only too well the beggars don't stand still for very long..speed is essential, I got 4 the other morning also a Crow and a Jay left them out for Mr. Fox over night, the next day i got 2 more magpies and went to pick them up and the others we're still there where i'd left them, only thing that had happened to them was Mr. Fox had took a Dump on them lol....Dirty Dog!! Hi there, I love watching your videos and seeing the different ways that you shoot! Keep up the good work :) I have one question, do decoys work as well on a grass meadow than on a stubble field?! I have looked at getting pigeon decoys as I have a .22 air rifle and a hide but didn't know if it is worth it? Thanks
@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 9 жыл бұрын
lilcorky250 If you want to decoy wood pigeons you'l need decoys and they'l work best on a freshly cut stubble field as there is plenty of food for the birds to feed on. They might work on a grass meadow if you set up under a pigeon flight line as pigeons use the same route from one place to another like we use roads, if you set up under one of these you'l have a good chance to decoy them down. I use a full bodied flocked decoy.

@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 9 жыл бұрын
MyRose911 With Woodie's I usual wait and see how the incoming birds react to the bird I've just shot because if its lying face down it will act like a decoy and the birds should keep landing but if its on its back the incoming birds will veer off and not land so you need to leave the hide to ether retrieve it or set it up as a decoy.

What about trying a longer stick as ur marker stick, one around 4 feet so the birds can land on it i used that a long time ago as i think they stick around a bit longer! Maybe due to not being to see as well in rough, longer grass,as they can on a taller stick. So its a safety issue for them!
@HuntersVermin

Gez B I found by accident some time ago that the birds like to sit on my range marker stick, maybe they just like to be that little bit above ground be for they fully commit themselves, i don't really know. I do at times try and look for a stick with a side branch on it for the birds to sit on but in the heat of the moment you pick up what ever you can find to get set up and in the hide quickly.

I don't know if your FAC class of air rifles manufacturers make any springers over 12 ft/lb for you, but my springer ( License need ) I use in Canada is more then enough to drop game as large as Raccoons at 30 to 40 yards. They are very accurate as long as you use pellets over the 8.2 grain weight in .177/4.5mm. living in an area were many people work in a city and live on small farms (10 to 40 acres), but do not hunt or know much about firearms I get asked to remove pest of the furry type. Yes my .177 12ft/lb HW97 will drop magpies etc with a heart shot out to 30-35 yards cleanly but i have noticed with the .177 compared to the .22cal that some times even with a well struck bird that they can fly off a short distance before dropping dead as the .177 doesn't impart as much knock down power as the bigger .22cal does.

+kimbo53898 Yum chocolate muffins, i usually have a big bowl of mini weetabix which keeps me going for a good few hours in the hide, as for the dog food on tin foil i have never tried that but it might work though being something a magpie would rarely see in the country side it might spook them as well, i have tried bread as bait and it works well but it can be hard getting a shot off as the birds will usually fly in grab as piece and away again before you get a shot off unless you use big enough pieces that they cant carry off.

I am interested in a spring powered pellet riffle. Are they pretty durable, and i noticed u cocked the riffle, how long can u cock the riffle, before shooting. Any maintenance?
@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 6 жыл бұрын
Yes most spring powered air rifles should be pretty durable especially the likes of the higher end makes like Weihrauch, Diana or Airarms , If you look after them they should last you a life time with little more than a wipe down with an oily rag before you put it away. Keeping the rifle cocked for an hour or two shouldn't do it any harm but depending on how much shooting you do the main spring and piston seals may need changed after a few years but you can buy tuning kits for these rifles which you can fit yourself to revamp the rifle back to new if not better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYKkm2iweb6dn5I kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3TCaHVpe9p-iKc

Thanks I was looking at the gamo 22. It runs for about 149 dollars. If I can get 5yrs out of it I would probably buy another. Not too good with repair. Thanks great videos

is it possible to hunt small game with an air rifle in Irland for an outlandish from Norway?
@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 7 жыл бұрын
You can shoot the likes of rabbits and crows in Ireland all year round so long as you have land that you have permission to shoot over, but both in the North and South of Ireland you need a licence to buy and use an air rifle for hunting.

if a farmer in Irland invite me, I have the right to shoot? would you? lol

Yes but you still need a gun to go shooting and a licence for vermin control or sporting purposes to use it.

I have made some of your shooting sticks they are great in the field but in a blind the dead rest it will hold your rifle for you and steady and it rotates 360 and up and down it tilts as well

I like using spring powered air rifles because they are cheaper than the fancy new ones. Which spring .22 air rifle did you have that you chose not to use? Could you tell me the name of the .22 cal you usually use please? I have a spring powered .22 now and love the power but it's not real precise. I can hit pest critters @ about 10 yrds with a red dot but no farther because it doesn't group well past that. Thanks. Btw great shot i always have to go for a heart shot but thats great you can go for head shots.

My first air rifle was a .22cal HW80 but its not on my licence at the minute so i can't use it. I usually use ether a BSA Superten or Theoben MFR pcp powered air rifles in .22cal for this sort of hunting but i wanted to see how good a springer would work on this hunt.

My thoughts are with you guys with all that paper work just for a pellet gun. Lol. Ok thanks for listing them. I am using a cheapo kodiak silver x2 with the .22 barrel and love the power vs the 177 on birds. My gun isn't accurate past 10 yrds for me free hand and it could shoot better but i go free hand since i usually don't have a nice rest. Also my $100 wal-fart gun isn't probably as accurate as yours. Thanks for the reply

Oh dang i just looked up the price tag on those guns and see why there so good.....there expensive. Some day i want a pcp air rifle. Thanks again!
@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah there not cheap like some of the Daystate and FX guns are just made money for an air rifle but there are cheaper pcp and spring guns out there that can shoot just as good in the right hands.

Nice! just wondering why you don't take the many magpies landing about in the trees? With the 177. pellet you shouldn't have to worry about striking anything beyond the bird beyond several hundred yards...... just curious?

@HuntersVermin
@HuntersVermin 3 жыл бұрын
Yes magpies are good for the ecosystem as they and other corvids are very good at cleaning up road kill and other carcasses but they also pray on ground nesting birds and song birds nest eggs and chicks so if there is a large number of magpies in an area there will be fewer song birds.
