JoelRiter So this happened just before I got my solo rating.. Me and my instructor were doing touch and goes at ILE on runway 19, about our 3rd one for the session so we were staying in the pattern. Of course according to the sock, it was runway one niner, and due to noise abatement, runway zero one was a left hand pattern. So if anyone got confused, you'd both be exactly at the same altitude, same distance from the runway going right at each other.. And something I noticed about old guys flying their personal aircraft: They don't like using the radio to either announce their intentions nor hear anyone else's. My instructor was a bit fixated going over the downwind leg checklist.. I was a bit edgy in my early 20's, so between it all I was still scanning outside... I missed the Skymaster entering the wrong pattern, but a fraction of a second after my instructor started going over something involving the AI, I see a prop and wings perfectly bisected by the horizon dead ahead. We couldn't have been 1/2 of ILE's runway apart. Self preservation kicked in. I slammed the yoke and rudder hard left and pulled back fairly hard, shoving my instructors face into the right window, where we both saw the skymaster get easily within 200 feet of us, his engines were louder than ours in our 172. After we recovered I scanned around, then started shaking.. I asked my instructor if he was good, since he just basically took a shot to the face and saw his death zip by. He affirmed he was good, he already had his hands on the controls, but I guarantee he didn't have the strength to overcome my adrenaline, even with his. Upon his acknowledgment I pulled back my feet and hands. Next landing was his and a final stop for a badly needed lunch break. I at first wanted to report the near miss, but during lunch and NOT because my instructor mentioned it, I realized he was at fault a bit as well as an instructor that got distracted by the lesson and stopped flying the plane. The Skymaster was easily 90% responsible. When we confronted him on the ground, he claimed he never saw us. He was at that lunch, on him. He was shook up as well. I asked if either of them learned anything from the incident. Old guy swore he'd use his radio more and brush up on basic pattern rules, my instructor swore to never stop flying the plane. Good enough, we all agreed to let it go as long as the nearest radar at Ft. Hood never said anything. That was in the mid 1990's.
