The fact that you took the time to open that sensor and show us the way things work makes this the best video I've seen on the topic. I like the science behind how things work. Thank you sir !

That jelly is what us electrical engineers call "conformal coating". It's used to prevent moisture from damaging the circuit board. Pretty much every factory board in the vehicle (minus the radio and instrument cluster) is coated. However, some are "hard" coatings (like on the RABS computer in my Ranger). Those do not allow for any adjustment or repair after the fact. However, they make penetrable coatings like seen with this sensor; they're made so you can poke through it to make adjustments or the like. If I were to guess, this was probably chosen to allow for some sort of a sensitivity calibration.

The device probably has accelerometers. It probably has 2 inside one of the larger chips. It has 2 so the device can measure any sudden impact in an any direction the car normally travels in. Most cars travel in the forwards, backwards, left and right directions (yes, some travel up and down but that is likely not a condition of normal travel. There may be 3 accelerometers to cover up down. This could be used to deploy the airbags if the car fell off a cliff and the designer wanted the airbags to deploy when that happens. Thanks for video. Many accelerometers are made of a very small plate that deflects in the direction of motion.

noticing this is your newest tutorial yet maybe i can get a response from ya, i got a 1998 chevrolet k1500 with the 4l60e trans. i know there is videos on here on how to do a complete flush of the trans fluid from the radiator. but your tutorial are alot more in depth and i was wondering if you had a chance to create a tutorial and specify parts needed to do this project along with a filter change of the same trans. i would very very much appreciate it!

So, at 4:57 you see the failure point, the aluminum cylinder that the plastic is molded around for the attachment point has corroded and/or allowed water to get between it and the plastic and then froze and thus expanded the plastic and cracked it, which allows the water in. I think a preventative measure would be to squirt a big glob of silicone up into the threaded hole in radiator support first, then fill the hole in the sensor, coat the threads real good and put a big glob under the bolt head and the washer. Then both sides of the aluminum cylinder and the threads would be sealed and no water could get to it in the first place. Water and ice probably sit in the bottom of the rad support right over the hole that the sensor threads into and the water works its way down the bolt threads and sits in the cavity between the bolt and aluminum cylinder and then freezes and cracks the plastic housing, or the salty water just corrodes the aluminum and the corrosion does the expansion.

+MrTurdfergusen you sound like you know what you are talking about. however, have you considered that plastic cracked when he opened up the sensor? how could you rule out that crack was there before he opened up the plastic? I hate to cast doubt on your theory, but i can't say it's not possible
@MrTurdfergusen

Mike C If you watch closely you can see that the area around that aluminum cylinder that the mounting bolt goes through is bulged out and there is white crusty stuff falling out of the 2 large cracks around it, he never really put any pressure on that area. This type of corrosion induced bursting is very common with plastic parts that are exposed to the elements, its the same reason that causes corroded fasteners to become stuck together, the corrosion expands and locks the fasteners together, in this case it was only 1 metallic part surrounded by plastic, the plastic is weaker so it gave way to the expanding corrosion, breaching the seal of the housing. Brian never really jacked around with the mounting hole so i guess i dont understand how him opening the sensor would cause the bulging around the metal sleeved mounting hole from the inside the sensor not to mention, the white crusty junk in the large cracks around the bulge. I think its pretty cut and dry......

OK that clear large chip is most probably the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) device that measures the acceleration. The signal is probably transmitted on CAN bus. I don't think the resistance is a measure of functionality. It definitely had water ingress which crapped out the circuit. I am not sure about the gel, though, maybe for vibration dampening? Not for conformal coating purposes probably, it really didn't work. Great video as usual! Thanks! Koray

Im guessing its a constant stream of acceleration readouts to the SRS computer, that then decides if a crash has occurred.

The chooch factor of the sensors dropped to negative because the electronic pixies died and got covered in mold aka corosion. AvE' videos did this to me. it is funny how moisture can get past the tiny contacts and seals and ruin the sensor.

5 things spring to mind. 1 no confomal coating on the board. 2 wires from board to conector not insulated. 3 the gel is likley to dampen bumps to the circuit but started to conduct due to saltd. 4 the ultrasonic weld was shit when produced, so numbers 1, 2 and 3 shouldnt have happend in the first place. 5 bad design, planed obsolecence. torquing that bolt down on the structural tube will crack the seal around it. then thermal expansion/contraction and air preasure changes fuck it all up.

In Layman terms- it's called "Potting Material". Depending on the need- it comes in different consistencies and colors, and it's used to protect circuits. To remove stuff like this- and to do all your electrical repair/rebuild projects- may I suggest this---www.autozone.com/miscellaneous-cleaners-and-degreasers/electrical-parts-cleaner/crc-electric-parts-cleaner/119711_0_0/ But be careful- this stuff is *strong*, and it will remove and melt automotive clear coats, paint, etc. and it will certainly *defat* your hands- so use PPE when using! It is the *nasty big brother* to what you already have there!
