The Egzumer v0.17 firmware is the best one I've found for my UV-K5 so far. Thanks a bunch. It makes the UV-K5 an acceptable air band receiver and has a lot of useful features to use it on the ham bands.

Just tried the airband mod on my K8...massive improvement, hard to believe a firmware mod would do that, but it does. If only all the other mods worked as well, or at the same time. I suspect this radio actually needs more flash memory to store all the mods, and I will eagerly await a new iteration, and I will buy it, because the UV-K8 is amazing compared to all other cheapies. Oh and it could do with substantial water-proofing as I use mine on boats at sea often in rough weather , ( with Marine Rescue.) Great video too, so thanks.

When the radio was first introduced I did some experiments with the air band. My impression was that of an insufficient AGC causing distortion to the audio once the receiver signal strength exceeded a certain level.

HUUUGE improvement. I played around a bit last night. After installing this firmware, i also set the AM freq's all to NARROW. The audio is now even more clearer than when it is set to wide , and it seems to be more sensitive, as im also receiving MORE now when set to narrow than i do when its set to wide. I see you can also set blaclight intensity BLMin/BLMax which is nice and will probably save a bit on the battery 73

I miss living 4 kilometers from brisbane airport. My scanenr and antenna setup picked up almost evey radio in the entire brisbane to gold coast to toowoomba to the sunshine coast. It was great. Now im in a rural area i get aircraft and cb and amature but a lot less than when i was in brisbane

Yeah, been playing with the AM FIX mod for several days now, and it basically took the Air Band from being unusable to clear as a bell. Looking at the code, it appears to have been a gain problem.

I have a UV-K5 that came with the .25 Firmware. I downloaded the Firmware updater and that came with the .26 Firmware. I updated to the .26 Firmware and UVMOD is working fine. Now, on the Quansheng website is a newer Firmware listed for the UV-K5, version .31. I installed that version and it works fine. However, UVMOD doesn't seem to be working with that Firmware. I upload that Firmware to UVMOD, patch it and then download the patched version, upload it to the radio and then the radio doesn't turn on and I have to re-flash back to one of the stock Firmwares. I assume they changed something in the .31 Firmware?

UVmod is based on .26 code, the .31 lines of code probably won't match as things are added/removed prior to compiling!

Cheers for the video mate - I'm the same as you. My unit does not receive on the HF at all - I don't think some of the chips have the wide band facility and we were the unlucky ones. I tried a small test to transmit on 27.780 FM from my 7100 and can't hear anything even in close proximity.

Once the Mod is done, how do you actually access the Airport frequencies? Is there more than one? If yes can the radio scan all of them? I'm new to this I'm sure you can tell. I've already used the menu to turn the Air Fix on. Not sure what I do now??

Google is probably your friend... Google your airport "tower frequency" and see what comes up - or you can use the scan function of the radio to find an active frequency.

I picked one of the UV-K5(8) up off Aliexpress, It just didn't work as well as the UV-K5 I have. It doesn't receive any of the NOAA channels, It's FM broadcast receive was maybe in the shortwave band (?), and only got one channel - on many different (indicated) frequencies. I used my UV-K5 to do the OTA clone, thinking maybe a hidden setting was causing the issues. Interesting enough the clone changed the opening screen from Quansheng to Anysecu (my UV-K5 is the Anysecu model), I am now able to get FM broadcast, but it seems like it's off freq quite a bit. Still no NOAA channels, and AM is sort of working now. The UV-K5(8) came with European style base charger, I was thinking maybe it was setup for use in the UK, but I don't see any way to change it to US usage. I've always been hesitant about third party firmwares, but in the case of this cheap radio, I don't see how it could make it worse. And might actually make it better. Thanks for the video.

@@HamRadioDX Brief update, these are weird radios - I put the stock antenna on it - and FM and NOAA both work. I put the ABBREE antenna on my original UV-K5 - and no FM or NOAA. I also tried a couple other antenna (which I know are good antennas) on the new UV-K5(8) and UV-K5 radio, no FM - NOAA worked thou. But the stock antenna appears to work the best on this weird radios. PS. It was very cheap on Aliexpress, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a knock off - but if it is it's a fairly good physical copy. Also it took the 3rd party firmware without any issues or problems (very easy to upgrade honestly) And easy to go back to the original firmware if needed.

Another heads up: when I tried to flash it it loaded about 10% before the Dell Latitude Windows 10 gave me the blue screen of death and rebooted, bricking the radio. It did it again after it rebooted. Third time is the charm... Make sure you are running the pre-2012 Prolific driver for the cable before you brick the radio. Once I installed it the radio programming was a snap.

@@DataDev The first step is to make sure that you have the right driver for the programming cable installed. If you are getting a message about support ending in 2012 just copy and paste the error message into Google and you will be able to get the correct driver.

Hello - please excuse my newbie questions. I got the UV-K5(8) for £8 from Alibaba maily to listen to air band as i have several local airfields and the Luton flightpath above me. Given how cheap this was I have no problem trying the firmware update, for fun really. But my question is: can I use the handset as a license free PMR446? Is there an issue with broadcast power for license free with this? If I can't use the PMR446 I will disable Tx completely - which I think I can do with the patch. I've never owned any kind of 2 way radio before so excuse the questions.

Luton in the UK? I m waiting for mine to arrive. I believe you can use it as a walkie-talkie on PMR without a licence between 446.0 and 446.2 Mhz. Outside that you will need a radio amateur licence.

Qite old video and I doubt you don't know this but if not here it is. This is from what I have seen around net from time I got my quansheng uv k5-8. Still no modification done to my radio as had issue with it , not possible to use serial to usb cable to connect it to PC. And waited finally to get my refund for it as side 2.5mic connector does not work , does not have connections with board. In mean time seen tons of videos and red a lot of material about it, so About SSB reception , I think you need upgraded board for it 2.0 at least but I suggest order 2.5 as it is quite better then 2.0. It cost 10-15$ . 73 from E77ASR.

The stock works ok if you're closer to the airport and have line of sight. Of course range depends on where the transmitting aircraft is (on approach, on the runway, etc.,) in relation to you. I have an old Diamond 2m band antenna (RH77 I think) that I used to use on an old Radio Shack scanner. I just have a BNC to SMA adapter and this also works pretty well. 2m is close enough to airband that any decent 2m should work pretty well for ATC reception. Also helps if you want to listen to milair frequencies since those are typically in the next harmonic.

Hi Hayden. So I have a bit of an offbeat question. I was going to email you but i read somewhere yu don't respond to emails to much. Fair enough. So I have been a radio enthusiest since the early 90s, and Ive been subbed to your channel for a bit, which I love. I used to have my Unrestricted amateur radio license years ago in NSW ( I held a limited callsign as well as an restricted ). Now I've tried to look this up but its a bit confusing, given how callsigns are allocated, but before i actually go ring up the ACMA, I was wondering how easy it is to renew your license after a long time being unlicensed? I still have my original certificate so have the certificate number, but I am unsure if I will need to test again here in Australia after being away so long, or If I can just pay the fee, get a callsign allocated ( I see they do this now, you don't get to pick ). I was wondering do you know much about this situation these days at all and if you could give some advice? By the way I just bought a UV-K5 and programming cable to add to my radios. Mostly I play with receivers and SDRs, which are amazing tech compared to the radios I started with in the late 80s! I appreciate any feedback you give on this. Keep up the good work mate with the channel!

Hey mate, The AMC are currently in charge of allocating callsigns (until at least Feb 2024 - then the ACMA will be taking over). All that should be required is to show your original certificate and that should suffice to get an Advanced License - pretty sure that’s the equivalent for the old unrestricted. www.amc.edu.au/industry/amateur-radio If you’re happy to wait a few months - you might save some dollars doing it through ACMA once they take over the exams and callsign management - there will be no annual fee for a license and you’ll only need to pay for the allocation of a suitable callsign.

I have 2 qyt 58 radios cb radios and they distort on am transmitt. But there clear on fm. I wonder if there is a fix for them Otherwise I just gotta sell them cheap or throw them away.

Nice radio, spectrally clean too, closest harmonic is 49db down on 2M, no harmonics detected on UHF at all. Relatively sensitive - but using it on non ham bands is strange, full scale signals wont open squelch even with SQ set to 1, hit monitor to open it all up and bang, rock solid crystal clear, there is no ctcss or DCTS either, this is an un-fw-moded radio, its TX expansion was enabled in chirp, wonder if anyone else sees this on mod'd or unmod'd version this is (8) variant, good one to try is 477.400 uhf CB 40 (Aus), signal generator is clear tone when you hit the mon button, drop it back to normal and even a -70dbm signal wont open it up (yet on ham bands a -132 DBm opens up SQ 1 on both call chans), the same weirdness applies to VHF marine, BUT Airband works, it opens the SQ normally, I even changed the generated tone freq from 1K to 800 Hz incase there was some weird conflict. Hayden, have you tried sig-gen'ing these units out of "normal" band? (my tests are using tinySA ultra) (incidentally, if I try AM signal on 477.4 it does open, just not on FM)

As you say, its AM lacks dynamic range. Here is my tip. If you want to listen to Air Band AM , get an Aicraft radio especially if you are feeding it to others. The OLDER Aviation radios have better sounding audio. The Rolls Royce are the King Bendix older style like the KY196 and its audio is better than you get in the latest aviation radios.

Another way to clean up the AM reception on these radio's is to use a better antenna for that band. the little rubber ducky antenna isn't even CLOSE to the airband frequencies, but a 55cm long antenna makes a world of difference. Paul from Slovakia - OM0ET, uploaded a video on his channel about a new firmware aswell, it supposedly fixes the SSB reception along with some other improvements. ITS NOT this firmware your using. It might be a different option for some people. I have installed it on my Quansheng UV-K5 and my KSUT UV-60D, both the same radio, just a cosmetic and name change on the case. It seems to work OK, but as with all these firmwares, it's not perfect. After installing, you push the function button, then button #5, then use the function button with the FM button and you can scroll from FM to AM to SSB, I'm still trying to work out how to get the desired frequencies to be easily accessed. I can enter an airband or six meter frequency via the VFO, but as soon as I enter any of the expanded displays shown in these KZbin video's, such as the spectrum, the frequency is simply random, usually 5-10Mhz away from the channel selected, and the ONLY way to adjust it is by 10Khz steps, it takes FOREVER to get from 136Mhz down to 127Mhz at so small a step, and once the radio DOES get down there, any further button use makes the frequency jump to a random spot on the band, or even to another band entirely. It can be a pain in the arse at times, but for less than $50 delivered, both of these radio's are fine with me.....I cannot afford to buy a $3000 radio to to get these bands, and a scanner is better for airband anyway, as this radio can only use ONE CHANNEL at a time and it's VERY difficult to make a scan list on them for anything other than the 2m or 70cm bands. They are fun though. Shame the cheap upgrade antenna's usually have an SWR of about 12:1, I have a box full of unusable SCAM Nagoya NA-771 clones that are so wildly out of tune all you can do is laugh about it, good thing they only cost $0.70 each. They say HAM radio is a fun hobby.....

Thanks for the info! I found that you need to press the PTT button once you're in the spectrum view to get this "capture" screen where you can enter and adjust the frequency more easily.

In SSB mode FUNCTION then 5, press the PUSH to TALK button which switches the screen VFO and LNA mode, then press 5 again the display changes to a line to enter your frequency, example: 024 then press the SCAN button to get your . then press the rest of the frequency 000000 and then press the MENU button to enter the frequency you just keyed in.

No it won't TX that far. The PA is not broadbanded enough to cover that, and even if it did, it would be extremely inefficient and spurious unfortunately

50Mghz to 600Mghz... so um.. no shortwave 1.6Mghz to 20Mghz and no scanner frequencies... which is like 700Mghz to 960Mghz (I think from memory). Okay without those two, what's the point of this radio. Maybe if it could actually transmit on the aircraft band, as a dirt cheap better than nothing radio for an ultralight aircraft pilot radio.

You only need license when you transmit on repeaters or if your talking to someone else who is licensed. The fact you can buy them, use off channels with other members of the community as a com when hiking, camping. As long you are not on a emergency channel. You don't a license unless you are on a repeater or emergency channel or military channel. Other than that, the FCC is not coming after you. Remember, Repeater! Emergency Channels! other than that, you can transmit on private channels as walk talkies. There are no said laws that violate. Unless your in the UK, their laws are petty AF LMFAO, but you know what I mean. Of course if you want to talk to the members of the HAM community you need a License. but if you using these types of COMS for Hiking, camping and stuff like that, you don't need a license period. You should explain to your viewers what that license is for and how it applies to that radio. There are Millions of people around the world who use a HAM radio without a License and they not in jail or charged with criminal offences. there are certain situation like talking on repeaters, emergency channel, the normal stuff you would need a license for.
