The ONLY Reason that Airbnb even exists is because America, and to a lesser degree the whole West is SO Broke. Is it a coincidence that this firm started after the 2008 meltdown ? I don't think so. I can tell you that it wasn't that long ago when the average American would've thought that it was well below him to rent space in stranger's home while on vacation. THAT was certainly NOT the American Dream as I remember it from the 1950's. The American Dream meant being able to afford a decent hotel while on vacation. SO, What Happened ? What happened is that America started a slow but steady economic decline after the Vietnam War and it's still going on. And since so many Western economies are tied to the American Economy the whole West is going down the toilet economically too. People who say Airbnb is "fun" are just putting a smiley face on the fact that they can't afford better. Saying that Airbnb is a good and fun idea is like the orchestra on the Titantic who continued playing happy tunes as the ship sank. And very soon the economy of America, and of those who depend on it are going to be submerged into the Worst Economic Disaster that the modern world has every seen. But just keep that smiley face going, OK ? ... jkulik919@gmail.com

The Airbnb we stayed in on our vacation in the Virgin Islands was a huge part of the what made our trip wonderful! The house was large and high up on a hill overlooking the beautiful Caribbean all the way to the horizon. It was an old Italian styled, very roomy and airy house with a wrap around balcony and excellent privacy - the view of the ocean couldn’t have been better. We couldn’t have had a more excellent and luxurious accommodations anywhere else on the island for the reasonable price we paid for the week! Best experience ever. I’m very thankful for the Airbnb option.

I am so glad you addressed this issue. As a renter the Airbnb market has DESTROYED the long term rental industry!!! This has led to a massive decrease in available units for those who cannot afford to buy a home!!! Airbnb is an ECONOMIC website, and lost the Social aspect of the original concept years ago! The rental units for families are not available, because they've been converted to businesses!!! If you want to rent a room in your home, go ahead, but to move out and converting it into a business and pushing local residents out of the area is simply WRONG!!!

I live in a highly tourist area and airbnb is a horrible tourist trap. Prices are double than actual monthly rent around here. You can sometimes find a cheap host that just wants some company and is doing it to meet people but that's rare. Airbnb should have an option to filter out whole cabins or homes and just look for rooms. The idea behind airbnb is solid but humans will always ruin a nice thing given the chance...

On the consumer side of things, make sure you take pictures of EVERYTHING upon arrival. I stayed at an airbnb for 3 months and when we checked out the owner claimed we damaged her chair. Tried to charge me 2300 dollars for it, luckily we had pictures showing the damage we found upon check in. Airbnb backed us and she got nothing. I was an Airbnb host for over a year. Pros and cons for sure:). Pros, the extra money, I lived in Ca's wine country and was sold out every single night I wanted to list, I met nice people. Cons: you're letting strangers in your home and now that I've been out of it for a couple of years I wouldn't do it again. The safety is an issue for me. I did have some rules, mainly no guests could stay more than 2 nights; I figured I could handle most people for 2 nights lol. I also wouldn't let guests stay unless they had stellar reviews:).

I've been a guest in airbnb's many times as well. Twice I didn't like the host's attitude on the phone and airbnb reserved me a hotel room and let the host know I wouldn't be there that night. I don't remember what the problem was both times but once it was the host was really rude. She kept trying to pin me down on to the EXACT time I would be there and I didn't know the exact time. It was too late to get my money back so I called airbnb and they told me not to worry about it and reserved me a hotel room. I think they put it under the category I didn't feel comfortable with the host. Maybe I get special treatment because I've been a superhost for several years I don't know but I feel they bend over backwards for me. And no, not everyone is a superhost. I lost my superhost status once by canceling a reservation. They now let you cancel two a year without repercussions. I think this video was made a while back and they've ironed out many of the problems shown.

No one should rent out their home on AirBnB. You should rent separate apartments on the site - NEVER your personal space where you and your family live. Also, never rent out high-valued homes or apartments on the site. If you do, charge an exorbitant security deposit. That will discourage low-quality renters. This is so sad!
@tmgarcia2002

Airbnb is not positive for the hotel industry and long-term renters. Major cities like Berlin, Amsterdam, etc... have really high rents now because most are converted into short-term rentals for tourists. Good thing in Singapore they cannot operate legally, and most people who still do it are given really high fines to deter them from doing it again.

My negative experience using AirBnB as a "customer" was not only one because of the host, but also made possible by the "customer service". I had to pay a penality fee for leaving early after having been on the verge of "bodily damage" - hardly any heating and broken windows, amongst other things. The "customer service" contradicted each other on top of that.

When I booked the dates, I was informed that the next door neighbor was aware of rental situation and would be monitoring the house for the owner. Honestly I was relieved that there was someone close if the house had any issues. Luckily the only issue we had was turning on the living room tv. I stayed at an airb&b, not sure if my fiance found it through that platform or not, but that's essentially what it was. They only accepted cards, and before you could even pay, you had to agree to the terms of services stating if there was any damage when you leave, they had the right to charge your card. I wish we would've taken pics of the place when we got there, because we ended up getting a bill for existing damage, so it's not just owner's who get screwed in these situations, sometimes it's the actual "renters". Surely the actual airb&b has an agreement like this set up to protect there owners though right? I don't see how it wasn't possible to track down those people who destroyed those owners' homes, if they had a card on file for the purchase. It's more like they just didn't want to. Still recommend people taking pics of the places they rent though, just in case an owner tries to pull one on you like what happened with us, because it can definitely be a two way street.

Thanks for sharing this documentary, absolutely fantastic and really great interviews. After you hear a few of the “replies” from Airbnb, you start to notice the pattern don’t you. Also, Airbnb say that they “remove” a bad lister and the listing, but then that same bad lister can just relist that property using a different email etc etc. The current version of Airbnb is so so far removed from the (apparent) original ideals they espoused. It appears that absolutely nothing is ever their fault and they rely on customer inaction and then only act (or appear to act) when the press are involved. As a single woman, I’d never ever use their services. I’ve heard too many stories like the ones told here. P.s there’s also the fake listings. The guy that came home to find a family of 5 strangers inside his beach house - someone had listened his property and taken photos from the internet. You can also find multiple listings using the same images. To get around being identified they flip the images and or cropped them to make it appear as a different picture. Airbnb should be ashamed. For me personally, the subletting of community housing properties is the final straw. Thanks but no thanks 🙂🐿

@Matt Sterling - it is true, the house and family arriving was filmed by one the family members. I think they only managed to get inside because the homes owner had popped out and left a sliding door open or something. I’m guessing that it was never the intention that they got inside - by that point it doesn’t matter, the scammer has made their money. The owner and the family that booked the property were interviewed for another documentary regarding Airbnb and their experiences. I can’t remember exactly but I think the property images had been taken from a real estate website as the house had been on the market. I’ll see if I can find a link for you 🙂

The house was nice but the property owner did not clearly state that you will need an SUV or truck to get to the property because you take a concrete road to a gravel road to a dirt road that then had to cross a creek before you could get to the house. It was not clear to us that any vehicle crossing the creek had to be at least 12" off the ground due to the fact that there was a steep incline down to the creek bed before you find out the creek bed is about 2 feet deep and full of rocks. Then you have to go up an even more steep hill coming out of the creek to get up to the house. Driving a small car that sits approximately 6" off the ground I was not willing to potentially submerge my engine to cross the creek. My friend and I left my car parked on one side of the creek and road with someone else who had a large suv up to the house. One of the other people driving a small car tried to cross the creek and had the engine cover on the underside of the car ripped free from their Dodge Charger. When they demanded that the owner of the property pay them for the damage to the vehicle because the owner allegedly did not clearly explain the creek situation. The property owner brushed off their complaint saying they drive through the creek all the time and it has never been an issue and further that the property owner claimed they did explain the creek situation in the rental listing, but would agree to giving them $200 to make them leave the property with the damaged undercarriage zip tied onto the car. The owner of the dodge charger explained that they would not leave the property till the owner agreed to pay for the repair as it would not be safe to drive the car 4-6hours home with the undercarriage zip tied in place. The property owner agreed to follow the dodge charger owner to a repair shop for an estimate of the repair costs. The rest of our group was told later that at the repair shop the repair was estimated at $800-1000, but the property owner would only pay $500 towards the repair cost and that the property owner would take them to court if they continued to push for the full repair cost of the vehicle. The property owner then points out she is a lawyer, and represents all kinds of unsavory people and therefore it would be in the best interest of the vehicle owner to take the $500, and leave. I think the property owner even made some kind of comment to the effect that the lawyer property owner would sue them if they left a negative review of the property on airbnb. Needless to say the person who did a poor job of planning the event tried to encourage the dozen people who attended to leave negative reviews for the property. I didn't leave a review because it was not my property that was damaged but I am unlikely to ever use airbnb again after the experience.

I will be using one for the first time. We are traveling with extended family for an out of state wedding. My thinking is since we will be traveling with 3 small children, it would be nice to be able to put them doen for naps and at night to bed while we adults played cards or watched a movie. Plus the savings in being able to do breakfast and lunch "at home" helps make the trip a little more affordable since the plane tickets were outrageous! Hoping for a good experience.

I was the biggest fan of airbnb...i was the 4th person in my city to rent out and they used to be sooo nice. I had the nicest guests and i stayed in the nicest places. But it changed so much. Meanwhile i owned a nice villa in Croatia, renting out to handpicked guests Airbnb pushed me to take on a inquery from a group of guys lying to me obviously in the first place. Airbnb came around with restrictions if i not take them. Finally i did and they messed up the house totally. Reporting it to Airbnb they totally stayed out of it, leaving me with the mess. A little later they blocked me, with NO EXPLANATION. i cant rent out or travel with them anymore. They stayed unresponsive to all my correspondance referring i have hurt their regulations. but where and how? My friends apartment was covered in feeces-again no support from them. I guess there is so much more than what goes public...they only take care of things that go viral.

Reading all the neg comments about how people would never put their house on airbnb. Thought I'd chime in as I've done it for 10 years. It's mostly a summer thing as I live outside Yellowstone Park and the park closes in the winter. It's the easiest money I've ever made and I've had ZERO problems with guests. I've had a few I didn't particularly care for but no one has caused me problems or damaged my home. I have an apartment in my basement and that is what I rent out. I did it during Covid as well. I never got sick or had guests that seemed sick. People traveled more during the pandemic and I had guests all winter. I'll keep doing it till I'm too old as I enjoy it and like I said, it's easy money.

I've mostly had good experiences with AirBnb-only once did I have an issue that they sort of ignored. Just a heads up in general that the majority of listings in Berlin are scams. I got "lucky" and the one I rented was real but when I turned up the wifi wasn't working and yet the hostess was constantly on her own personal hotspot/wifi device despite there being "wifi continuous" on the listing. I was refunded for that for my whole stay. When I left tho, I discovered that I left my favorite jumpsuit ($70) and asked the hostess to return in. She said she would and then disappeared and all her reviews after me were people saying she no showed them and that they were left without a place. I just lost my jumpsuit and they never helped me reach out to the hostess after she ignored me. Small issue in the scheme of things.

I live in a building with 2 air b n bs and while some guests are fine, many leave their trash on the porch/in the common area and have little respect for noise rules. The city I live in is very touristy, and there are many blocks that are full of air b n bs. As a result, people cannot afford to rent. There really need to be more regulations. Also, one of the units' guests left the bathtub running and it soaked through my ceiling. I lost electricity for a month and still have water damage. When air b n b was contacted to pay for the damage, they came back with a big NOPE despite sending an assessor out who verified the damage. Luckily, the host is not a monster and paid for my electricity to get fixed, etc but yeah...their customer service sucks and they are clearly just in it for money, not "social sharing."

You have to be realistic- the fact that Air bnb offers any form of assistance and minimal 'insurance' is actually a miracle. Besides removing listings, black listing people etc, Air bnb actually has close to zero control over any host or customer issues. Both parties must simply accept the risk and mitigate it themselves with their own common sense, own insurance policies, the police etc. Be realistic. Air bnb actually has nothing to do with these issues. It's as unrealistic as going after a newspaper agency for a bad advertisement or listing places in their paper in the old days..🙄😋

Our family is in love with using Airbnb’s! Whenever we plan a vacation we always book thru Airbnb or VBRO as we enjoy so much the experience of renting a whole home as a family bring us a get together as a family again in usually and amazing city, state or island vacation! We’ve experienced NOTHING but positives! Then again we are not god forbid renting a single room in someone else’s home with them home wth 😳 Read the reviews. We always like to go with a gold star owner thats got exceptional reviews. I think its wonderful if your not trying to do it on the cheap and expecting something more than what you paid for.

From my experience most of them are always overpriced. I had one really great experience staying at a guest house on a property with a mansion. The back yard had a pool, lazy river, hot tub, park, volleyball court and a mini track. We paid $150 a night. The owner worked for the CIA and was hardly in town. Other places I’ve book had less amenities and cost 3-4xs as much.
@merica4realz630
@merica4realz630 2 жыл бұрын
@@marriejames01 price IS ALWAYS based on desirable location and amenities. If owners have a property with one or the other or both they have every right to price it accordingly. As a potential renter you can choose weather to pass or play. Yes, the nice ones of course are priced high why wouldnt they be? You get what you pay for. I’d rather save up and go nicer for a get away. If it was for business id probably look cheaper and settle for less desirable place/ less amenities. You yourself pick the place, again you get what you are willing to pay for. If I’m renting my home out I certainly wouldn’t be doing it for cheap as it would have to 💯 financially $$ be worth me having others into my home.

This is not a big deal Based on numbers. There 2 million listings on Airbnb and assume that 0.1% of hosts and guests are bad apples it means 2000 listings and guests are the bad guys, big a number to paint an industry as terrible forgetting the 99.9% or 1,998,000 listings that are excellent hosts and guests. What they pointed out here are isolated incidents you'll never even hear about in reality except once in a while news. I use airbnb for years now and I can tell that though there people who are bad, I'd categorically say that majority of users and hosts are excellent people. I'd go for airbnb forever...

Just like the other apps that people have created to make themselves rich with material things, like Uber and food delivery services, everyone knows by common sense there are risks involved and you should not be turning to the business owner later to fix something that you knew could possibly happen but you took that chance on your own anyway. Don't do ridiculous things that can bring you trouble turmoil or possibly worse! I personally feel cleaning fees that are charged leave people to automatically assume they do not have to clean up after themselves because they paid for the service themselves. Most people will party and leave their messes because they are on vacation and they think they don't have to pick up after themselves and they paid for a maid so let the maid handle it.
