On the 80s hover crafts were supposed to be the big thing . But people realized it's cheaper and easier to do this instead.if you can go though bogs and mud with it Should be no problem going across frozen ice and snow .

Back in the late 90s I have my boat built by stumpjumper up in Lake Panasoffkee. He also had a drag boat that was bad ass. Does anyone remember that boat? Thanks.

I remember fondly as a young lad of around 9-10 yrs old going on an airboat ride in the Florida Everglades with my Mom - maybe 1958 or so. We both loved it even though it was very loud! I got a kick out of how fast it accelerated once it went from pure water onto wet reeds. Great fun!

Man, I would purely love to go cruising around on an airboat. Probably not one like these beasts, but something I could out in and explore. I saw one once on a tv show when I was wee lad and thought they were the coolest machines known to mankind.

Question for someone with knowledge of these. When they let off, there is a stream of water that shoots up behind the boat. Is this a brake of some sort?

The big lever is connected to the 2 rear 'air rudders' to direct the air flow to steer. Some guys use a hand throttle while others use a conventional gas pedal mounted to the deck. There are no brakes btw............😊

With the stick positioned on the right, pulling back you steer to the right, pushing forward, the boat steers left. These are race boats, so, as Todd mentioned, throttle can be foot or stick mounted. Most non-race boats have foot throttle, because the captain might be doing other activities, such as gigging for frogs. Some old timers actually had foot steering. I tried it, but, didn't care for the control.

They are in use in NT. Used for buffalo herding and hunting. Not for shooting crocodiles. Nope. Never happened

Thinking about doing my own airboat build .. I see lots of shells with the cages ,but no motors for cheap. Maybe find a good engine at the salvage yard .. my buddy has a few mercury marine inboard engines that may work , he’s had them on his fountain race boat. May be too big for an airboat lol

The engine slows and makes a vacuum behind the transom. The spray is not longer directed down

Why are the props on these so different to aircraft props? Most planes have 2 or 3 bladed props, these boats have many more - is it because of the relatively low speeds?

Air boat has to be the most inefficient way to move a boat. 1500hp with a propeller in the water, will get you almost twice the speed!.

Women will never understand men. Why on earth would we want to race Airboats? But we do, men will race anything and everything. In reality, women are just as competitive as men but in different things like fashion, looks etc. We are indeed different.

100 miles per hour in a 15 foot boat that can’t weigh more than 1,500 pounds… hell no. You couldn’t pay me to do this. That’s a fucking death wish. I don’t even know why they bother wearing helmets and life jackets. You’re not going to survive when it flips over either way.
