Man does this bring up some memories. I went to Airborne school in the spring of 1980 at 40 years old. I served 6.5 years with the 389th MI CO of the 11th Special Forces Group at Louisville KY. I can actually smell the aircraft and the quietness of the canopy flapping lightly in the air. A great job Jessie. AIRBORNE!

DAMN that's a big ass plane! Biggest I ever jumped was a C141 Starlifter. Never did a C5 but that C17 is just F'n YUGE!

Corrssia Perry I think I had an Airborne 68W contract when I wrote that but they took it away from me at MEPS like a few days later. I ended up joining as a 25N with no airborne. They did have option 40 at my A.I.T and I qualified for it but never sought after it. Wish I would have gotten that 68W with airborne cause this signal stuff is boring. Anyway, thanks for the response. Also, good job on passing jump school! I hope you have a successful Army Career!

When I went to the jump school a long time ago, there were 4 recon marines in my platoon, one recon marine couldn't keep up with the run and another recon marine refused to jump out of the aircraft( c-130). So only 2 of the recon marines made it through the jump school.

I only had 3 friends that were not Airborne 97% of my friends were paratroopers and you will make friends for life; I jumped 9 1/2 years before I became a conventional soldier again but it was the best and hardest time of my career and thing else was easy after that.

The marines DO NOT have regular Airborne units such as the 82nd Airborne in the Army. The marines only have special- op Airborne units such as MARSOC and Force Recon. If you are in good physical shape and have no fear of heights, then you wouldn't have problem passing the jump school. But the dropout rate at the jump school is still about 30%. On the other hand, the dropout rate at the marine boot camp is only about 11%. I saw quite a few recon marines failing the jump School.

Your observation of the Marines in jump school is spot on. I went through in July 71 and we had it seems, about 8 or 10 Marines. I think there was 3 or 4 that graduated. They were all Force Recon/ LRRP s ( long range reconnaissance patrol) Marines.

@@mikegrant8490 Today's jump school is lot easier than in the olden times. When I went to the jump school in 1967, only 1 out of 3 made it. As you and I are old timers , we know that the jump school at the time was almost brutal. It was three weeks of pure hell.

@@DumbHonkie1 At least the Black Hats encouraged us to eat salt tablets and drink water from those old canvas water buffalos. In a bit of down time during tower week, I got talking to one of the senior Black Hats and mentioned I had heard that the 82nd was back from Nam and was rebuilding the Division. He told me if I got to the 82nd to look up his brother, a First Sgt.... I didn't have to look very far, his brother was my Top at C- 3/325. Small world. Good people.

I had the door position last jump before graduation, it's the best position your hands are on the skin of the aircraft you really get to push yourself out and away from the plane. I was caught counting the jumpers in the stick the jump master caught me and motioned for me to sit next to him , I knew I had been had. Just make you sure you remember what you have been taught especially the landings .

US Army Rangers don't go through the training Recon marines do. They don't go through any training. As soon ad Ranger school is over they are deployable. Ranger school and pipeline are side by side as far as challenging goes, but the Marines have to do more in the water and on land. Marine recon is tougher than Ranger school because of the water and length of Recon Training

Devin Kiser I hope you are referring to RASP when you say Ranger school. Big difference between the two..lol Ranger school is a leadership course and RASP is for the 75th. You obviously don't know what you're talking about.
