For future reference, the P3 does have MAD gear, that's the "stinger" sticking out past the tail feathers. See how low you can get the P3 to fly, that's the altitude you want to be at when using the MAD boom. Then, in this scenario, one P3 can be make the final localization with the MAD boom, and the P3 in trail can drop the torp.
@TheHorzabora3 ай бұрын
It’d be really nice if the devs added in a flare drop animation / graphic for Madman detections.
@HarryWHill-GAАй бұрын
The way we were taught to make a MAD attack was that once you had the sub's course and speed, you made a head on pass over the sub. On MAS contact you made a tight turn to cross back over the sub. On that MAD contact you made another identical turn to line up on the sub's heading. On the third MAD contact you released the torpedo. This meant the torpedo would land ahead of the sub. By the time the torpedo got down to its search depth it would be very close to the target sub. This applies to helos as well as P-3Cs. The SH-3s had an active/passive dipping sonar and could drop from a hover. At that point you had to get the dipper out of the water before the sound of a hit would damage it and the AW's hearing.

Good Video. Thanks! Triassic really needs to get some ASW people, LIKE ME, to test out this game. Former S-3 Viking NFO. This game is right in my wheelhouse of experience and knowledge. Really looking forward to playing. Comments: - P-3 has got to have more sonobuoys than 48. That may be how many tubes there are but they carried buoys internally that could be loaded into a "manual" tube. - They've certainly modeled the MK46 accurately as it was a crap torpedo. I - 'm not sure what parameters they have for an "attack" but I would have NEVER launched a MK46 a mile away from my target. You fly over the attack point or MAD confirmation and drop. Torpedo goes in the water and makes a right turn to start its search. If you drop it ahead of the sub you might get a good one turn hit. - For an attack run you set up a four buoy barrier for the sub to run through and drop on top of the sub when they break the barrier. MAD contact is a nice confirmation. But if you only have 48 buoys you'll have to manage your assets well. - The long range contact may be a "convergence zone" if they've modeled that. This will be a challenge for a lot of people to understand for tactics. I like how another KZbinr said ASW means Awfully Slow Warfare. It is. Long and boring until the excitement starts. - Yes, that was a snorkel - Will they equip P-3s with Harpoon for the game? - BTW, P-3 pilots hate flying near other planes. Makes them itchy.

@@xxxm981 Dropped a lot in the simulator. Two torps to kill/disable most Soviet subs because of their double hull construction and the dynamics of where the hits occur according to simulations. I got to drop live torps on a simulated sub target twice on an instrumented range in Canadian waters north of Vancouver. Really tough range to prosecute in because of the limited size. Always turning in the aircraft. And just when you're inbound on your drop the simulator changes course. Very challenging. Second range was off Kauai with a simulated target. Dropping buoys and tracking until an attack. Bigger range so flying was easier and not as many sneaky turns by the target. The cool thing about the Kauai range is you would land at Barking Sands NAF, get out of the aircraft, turn it over to a waiting crew to go back to Oahu, and then go into the control room and watch the replay of your mission. Very instructive for the crew to see where the target was and your tactics in use. You would watch the next mission fly in and run against the target and then take their aircraft back to Oahu. If you the last mission of the day you spent the night on Kauai and saw the first aircraft of the next day run their mission and take their aircraft back. I miss flying. I miss the S-3 so much. Unless it’s an actual thing with Mk-46s, I think the game developers will have to solve the bug of subs being immune by being too shallow. There’s also a bug where a submarine starts bobbing up and down and is between life and death. You can’t hit it again but it doesn’t register as dead.
@captainfoxythepiratefox88743 ай бұрын
It's a actual mechanic for the US LWTs. As they are ASW weapons not AShW they are programmed to not target anything above a set feet for safety reasons as they would been launched from ships. Wouldn't want your own ASW torp to target your own surface ships lol.

Not sure if it's modeled in game, but depending on the era, P3's didn't just carry torpedoes. During the cold war, they also carried a pair of nuclear depth bombs. Those were basically a tactical nuclear bomb converted to act as a depth charge. Those bombs were primarily intended to deal with the large Oscar, or Typhoon class of submarines, which could (in theory) shrug off multiple air dropped torpedo hits. However, those same depth bombs were also expected to be used to force a submarine to the surface, as the concussion from the underwater nuclear detonation, even if a submarine were outside of the detonation range, would still damage any submarine within five to ten miles (depending on water conditions and depth of detonation).

I remember a rather lively discussion in Naval Institute "Proceedings" in the late 80s as to whether the US should develop a sub-kiloton nuclear torpedo and whether it's use would constitute a 'first use' of nuclear weapons. The middle of the ellipse of a sonobuoy contact is not an estimate of range. It’s a bearing-only contact without range information. The fact that sonobuoys closer to where you are marking possible positions are not getting the contact is a pretty strong hint that the actual position is much closer to the detecting sonobuoy. A better way to mark an estimated position would be the position along the ellipse that is less than half the distance from the next nearest non-detecting sonobuoy and then concentrate your search around that point and closer to the detecting sonobuoy.
@CaptinRusko3 ай бұрын
Unless you're picking it up on a sonabouy because of the convergence zone which would mean it's further away than the bouy that's not detecting it as that's not within a CZ. From what I have watched on ASW the game is modelling them at 30 and 60 miles so if your bouys are 15 miles apart the contact could be 15 miles on the other side of the one not detecting the contact

Classic TV/movie scenario. A carrier has been tasked to destroy an enemy air base/bridge/other. The target is defended by multiple SAM and gun emplacements hidden in the hilly terrain. Just for fun. Hiya - just as info we used to always fly 200'/200 knots during ASW. 266 is way too fast. 1,000' can be ok for passive tracking as you try and stay well away from where you think the sub is so it can't hear you, but yea 200/200 was the standard. Generally you would passively track using the passive listening AN/SSQ-53 DIFAR buoys for several hours to stealithy track sub and try and identify, then you would always drop several active AN/SSQ-62 DICASS buoys right on top of it to get a final attack criteria adequate enough to drop a weapon - exact criteria used by air forces is classified. Yea we could carry well over 100 buoys onboard - a mix of several types - usually more passives for tracking then a few for active attack, plus some AN/SSQ-36's for Bathy profile. Also it was the USA thing to just drop buoys all over the shop lol - we were a bit more targeted with our passives (drop then ahead of predicted sub path) - saves on buoys! Yup MAD right at the end of the tailboom - and again ideally you need to be at 200' for a MAD run. That torp that flew right over the sub should have detonated by magnetic fuse. Subs absolutely come up to periscope depth to check out where you are - and try and avoid you lol - but bottom lilne in my experience...if a sub doesn't want to be found, you will have a REAL hard time finding it!

The Kilo hears torps being dropped left, right and centre of him, it can also hear the buoys and see the P-3C's with its periscope, but he's just like "naah, I'm not movin'!" :) As for weird distance sonobuoy detections, sonar can detect targets way beyond its "advertised" range, it's all about sound propagation under water and what's known as "convergence zones". It's intermittent, so something might be detectable 50 miles away but the same target wouldn't be detected at 30 miles because sound bounces back off the layer and/or surface.
@HarryWHill-GAАй бұрын
I couldn't see the exact type of sonobuoys you were using but they were probably LOFAR (non-directional passive) buoys. Your planes can also carry CASS (active, range) and DICASS (active, bearing & range) buoys. The latter are used for final localization prior to attack. They might also prompt a sub lying doggo to make a run for it. As a sub, when you hear a DICASS, you know there will be a torpedo on the way soon. The initial locations you were getting were probably the games way of doing the Orion's Aviation ASW operator's mental mathematics to generate a probable location. BTW - The dead first sub you called a November was a Victor, the replacement class for the Novembers. Novembers look like a hot dog with a sail and only two propellers.

A Soviet Submarine would have had a very hard time to make it out of the gulf of bothnia, nearly impossible to get out undetected in the straits between Denmark and Sweden or to undetected navigate deeper into Danish waters between Sjaelland and Fyn. If Soviet subs were to try get out this way, they'd be sunk in those straits. This scenario is much more likely if the subs seemed to Originate from Murmansk heading for the GIUK Gap. But disregarding that, very entertaining. Keep them coming :)

I think the game models speed of sound for detection, the transient travelling past your buoys at around 1500m/s (0.8nm/s ?). dunno if bouncing in the layer is also considered, that would decrease the speed (but sustain the signal better iirc). so you should be able to follow the transient outwards and triangulate the target position with the bearings the buoys give you.

@@Stealth17Gaming True, I hadn’t finished watching it when I made that comment. The comment was made in jest more than judgement but if you took it to heart, not much I can do about that. I was under the impression, seeing as you made the scenario, that you’d have what I would consider basic knowledge and understanding of the P-3s systems. I was mildly amused to hear you utter the statement proving me wrong (at the time).

MAD on the P3 works best if you set it to fly at 50ft altitude, just like the helis need to fly at 20ft

You probably wouldnt be the first Norwegian P3 to prosecute a US sub. US Navy used to sail in Vestfjorden (south of Lofoten) which they consider open ocean, and Norway claims as our territorial waters.

Nice video Stealth! By the way, can you create a scenario where you need to protect NATO supply convoys from submarine threats and also add some air threats to the mix?, in my opinion it would make an interesting scenario i would like the NATO SAG to consist of 1 x OHP Class 1 x Spruance Class 1 x Kidd Class / Ticonderoga class and some cargo ships A Soviet task force consisting of 3 x Alfa class submarines 14 x MIG-23s or basically any fighter-bomber

Loving the content so far! I do have a question though, I downloaded this scenario and was setting up my sonobuoys in a 10nm x 10nm grid, but was genuinely getting nothing. Is this because I'm not using them correctly? My buoys were powering off before I had a chance to find anything (I know they have a lifetime of 1 hour), any hints on using them?

As to the torp going too deep to detect the Kilo that was snorkeling - wouldn't dropping it from like 300 or even 50 ft be better? Genuinely curious, because to me it would seem that it entered the water at too steep of an angle, leveled out too late and was too deep to detect the Kilo, ergo having to drop more torps.

What I'm wondering is, do those subs not have anti air? Even if just some AA missles if not a AA gun
@Hawkathon3 ай бұрын
No, none of those subs have AA. I’m not aware of any subs that have built in AA, as opposed to having independent platforms, like Stingers, that happen to be on board.
@GrumpBurger3 ай бұрын
Anti-air capability on subs would defeat the purpose of staying masked below the surface and having that chance to evade any interception measures because of it. Even if it did carry and fire AA missiles vertically towards the overflying plane, it would have to surface to at least periscope depth and just for the slight chance it would hit the plane above. The direct location would be known and other planes and surface ships would follow suit. AEW's are in constant communication with their operations base. ---- However older submarines had gun AA platforms they could use when surfaced, but a sub really doesn't want to be surfaced against threats with long range radar guided missiles and sonar guided torpedoes in the modern age. Even in WW2, for a submarine to use its AA guns it means it had failed its task to stay undetected and this was its last fighting chance.
@pascalsch143 ай бұрын
@@GrumpBurger I know that a sub wants to stay submerged but fact is that subs have to come up from time to time, to get fresh air for example or like in this video to charge their batteries. I just think it's better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it.
