Engine difficulties for multiple types of Airbus aircraft continue as Pratt and Whitney struggle to deal with the supply of engines and maintenance. Meanwhile engine difficulties continue to be uncovered which mean inspections are required.

The PW1000G is indeed more fuel-efficient than the CFM LEAP. Grounded aircraft don't use any fuel.

PW really can't blame "supply chain issues" on this anymore. The engine has serious flaws and that's on them.

No it doesn’t. The engine reliability is fine, not really worse than any other engine. The problem is the supply of parts for repairs.

@@MrSchwabentier Incorrect. The maintenance expense on the PW is nearly twice that of the CFM. Much less time on wing because of parts wearing out early and all the technical problems with the engines.

These engines are on the very edge of technology. Just seeing the power at take off, they are just remarkable . Powdered Metallurgy is not new however some of the metals & production methods are & sometimes a problem shows up well after. One of my engineering lecturers was a world expert on these methods & it was absolutely remarkable the methods he was talking about . The forces going on inside these engines is mind boggling . The about the most powerful GE90 that produces over 115,000 pound of thrust. Those engines provide enough power for the heaviest Boeing 777-300ER to climb on one engine after take off.

Interestingly, I haven't heard of significant engine reliabilty issues at Delta Airlines with their P&W PW1500G engines on the A220 planes. Maybe because Delta's world-renowned TechOps devision have the experience to actually _service_ the PW1500G properly?
@cedricfranzen8558

It’s less about know-how and more about parts availability. But Lufthansa, which also has a huge Tech devision is also having only limited problems. I suspect that their respective, very large, tech devisions simply have more parts in stock and obviously use them on their own aircraft first.

Airbus can have thousand's orders, but delivering these headline grapping orders has no relevance if you can't deliver. Post Covid supply chains are in a mess, engine manufacturers are hit hard trying to supply next generation engine's to Airbus, Boeing because these sales of new airplanes are mostly on the economics from these engines.

Airbus offered to his A32O customers the possibility to choose between 2 engines, PW should do the maximum to solve their issues on the GTF fans if they wish to continue selling engines! Furthermore, Airbus is also looking for a second possibility for the A220, specially if they go to the stretched 500 plane. My concern is your way to present the facts, the problems are mainly in the hands of PW, and Airbus customer had the choice to go to CFM.

No doubt that supply chain issues are a major factor, but US airlines seem to be faring better than everyone else, especially Delta Airlines. I suppose that, in the world of business, top customers get top priority.

Or should we say American customers get top priority? P&W doesn’t want to make enemies at home, especially those that can sue it and win. GoAir, that shut down in India recently, was denied arbitration in its suit against P&W - because it was an Indian customer, no doubt. After this, I see very few airlines (Indian, at least) opting for P&W engines, no matter how fancy their offerings are.

A very basic question. Does airplane choice lock carriers into an engine type for the life of the frame, or can the carrier change engine company and instal a different engine type (all be it with possible lower efficiency)?
@cedricfranzen8558

It sounds simple, but is practically very difficult - the engine mounts are different, the engine weight is too, which means changing the centre of gravity and associated calculations; all connectors and the FADEC and software would have to be changed as well.
