These engines are on the very edge of technology. Just seeing the power at take off, they are just remarkable . Powdered Metallurgy is not new however some of the metals & production methods are & sometimes a problem shows up well after. One of my engineering lecturers was a world expert on these methods & it was absolutely remarkable the methods he was talking about . The forces going on inside these engines is mind boggling . The about the most powerful GE90 that produces over 115,000 pound of thrust. Those engines provide enough power for the heaviest Boeing 777-300ER to climb on one engine after take off.

Airbus offered to his A32O customers the possibility to choose between 2 engines, PW should do the maximum to solve their issues on the GTF fans if they wish to continue selling engines! Furthermore, Airbus is also looking for a second possibility for the A220, specially if they go to the stretched 500 plane. My concern is your way to present the facts, the problems are mainly in the hands of PW, and Airbus customer had the choice to go to CFM.
@johniii8147 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure those that chose the PW didn't anticipate all the issues. Not much the carrier can do on an existing plane other than endure the issues.

Interestingly, I haven't heard of significant engine reliabilty issues at Delta Airlines with their P&W PW1500G engines on the A220 planes. Maybe because Delta's world-renowned TechOps devision have the experience to actually _service_ the PW1500G properly?
@cedricfranzen8558 Жыл бұрын
It’s less about know-how and more about parts availability. But Lufthansa, which also has a huge Tech devision is also having only limited problems. I suspect that their respective, very large, tech devisions simply have more parts in stock and obviously use them on their own aircraft first.

Airbus can have thousand's orders, but delivering these headline grapping orders has no relevance if you can't deliver. Pretty much impossible to change. The 787 is the only aircraft that technically designed to be „switchable“, but there it makes no sense economically, under any circumstances

It sounds simple, but is practically very difficult - the engine mounts are different, the engine weight is too, which means changing the centre of gravity and associated calculations; all connectors and the FADEC and software would have to be changed as well.
