Wow...we've all seen and been on flights where the takeoffs and landings have been smooth as silk. But here you see for yourself, these incredibly skillful pilots and the powerful airplanes really FLYING in the extreme.

I was there! I was in London, Heathrow, flying to Madrid. It took us 01 hour waiting to take off, all of us locked up in the airplane. We had no idea of what was going on. Then, the pilot spoke in Spanish only that they had to wait until the storm was over for the plane did not have capacity to go through that wind speed. There was a long queue of airplanes to take off. We were the first of the queue. After a long hour waiting we took off, and God help me, it was really, really terrible!! I did feel like that was it! It felt like the plane was not going to make it, you know! It felt like falling twice during the take off! Thank God and the abilitiies of the crew were got out of there! But, honestly, I didn't think it was the best decision to fly on that day, not that that time.I think it was too risky and the company should have waited and kept cancelling flights as many were.

It looks scary when one takes off and another looks so close behind. Its also amazing to me how wind can push around something so big and powerful such as these jets.

Not that difficult to understand really. Yes the jets are heavy, but they have a huge cross sectional area, especially so when seen from the side view, and the tail of the plane is horrendous for catching wind. Secondly, the planes will have a huge moment of intertia. In basic terms, they are difficult to move, but once they move, it's incredibly difficult to stop them.

Nothing like watching the wings flap like a bird on the B-747 !!! I rode C47 (Douglas DC-3) airlift hops for years and those wings REALLY flapped, especially in bad weather!!! All the seats faces aft so there was a great view. It looked like the went up and down about 10 feet.

At 0:55 seconds, as the 787 takes off, there is an A380 right behind it. Is that how close the landing slots are at Gatwick?

World’s most efficient single runway. When Gatwick changed ownership in 2010, the airport had a declared peak capacity of 50 movements per hour. This was already the highest of any single commercial runway in the world. However, just four years later, 55 movements was the regular rate during peak periods

Bear in mind that the runway is 3.3km in length. The separation was probably 4km by the time it landed and they don't give clear to land until the aircraft taking off is airborne.
