My favorite aircraft, the Airbus A400M Atlas. Very noisy beasts at 30,000ft+ high, and sometimes produce contrails!!

Why do they start up at full feathering? Wouldnt they do the opposite pitch to reduce the load on a starting engine?

I was thinking the same, plus the extra load on the blade. I guess they know what they are doing

Not need to unfeather the blade on free shaft turboprop engine

The condition of the blades with these engines when there is no power is feathered and as someone mentioned, the propeller is not connected to the gas generator so there is no load on the power producing part of the engine.
