Good to see Giuseppe Garibaldi for, maybe, one last time. Nice to see the Deck Approach Projector Sight is still installed on the FlyCo roof ... a rather unique installation and very different to that adopted on the Invincible class carriers, the two Indian carriers, the Spanish carrier Príncipe de Asturias or the Brazilian carrier Minas Gerais. Fond memories of working in the yard at Taranto.

At this point it's a very specialized ASW warship that is due to retire very soon. I doubt she has any fixed wing aircraft onboard at this point because it doesn't need them. It would normally fly the AV-8B Harrier II, a risky aircraft to fly if you don't need to. Beautiful ship for being laid down in 1981. It's good to see her one last time. Well done Italy!
@CobraEmergency8 ай бұрын
Yeah, it was nice to see this oldie come in, a type of cruiser-carrier from an older time to berth next to a newer carrier from today's time. Quite the contrast, and also interesting to see how much more armed it is. One last big exercise! Would have been nice to have seen the Harriers on board!
@sebastianoraffa21048 ай бұрын
She has been indeed downgraded to a heli carrier to support amphibous ops...he (in Italy we always refer to ships in the masculine when called by assigned name) though small (a bit of extra length and width would have not cost much and would have made her a bit more practical in handling the aircrafts) but a preatty design..she will be retired soon, but delays on the replacements of the small LPDs (a more questionable design, especially the early version) might make that a little less soon

yes, its very small, which makes wonder about the capacity of the hangars for storing and servicing the air crafts.

Went down to Torbay when all the Cruise ships were laid up during COVID (remember that).HMS Queen Elizabeth was there on trials and was a hell of a lot smaller than the passenger ships. Hopefully this will protect her just as the Argentinians back in 1982 took out the Atlantic Conveyor thinking it was HMS Hermes

@@CobraEmergency oh far from a carrier...back in the days it also carried ASW torpedoes and anti-ship missiles....when Harriers were a long way from arriving, and it was not event certain they would have ever arrived on her deck
@CobraEmergency8 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was reading about its ASW role in a sub hunting group. Not too many of those around in modern navies but a lot more common a few decades ago following the escort carriers we saw in WWII. It was pretty interesting Now it's mostly a helicopter landing ship.

Also the 2009-2011 C550 Cavour has "traditional" guns, 2 Oto Melara 76 mm and 3 Oto / Oerlikon KBA 25/80 mm. The substitute of the Garibaldi, the L9890 Trieste, that should enter in service in march/april 2024, has 3 Oto Melara 76/64 mm that can use the subcaliber guided DART ammunition and the Vulcano ammunition, and 3 Oto Melara / Oerlikon KBA 25/80 mm. They have also AA missile Asterv15 for the Cavour, Asterv15, Aster 30 or CAMM-ER for the Trieste. The Trieste has also a Leonardo Black Snake towed array sonar operating in “passive” mode, specially designed for torpedo detection.

@@jamesvalentine2845 we have multiple carriers and they are not 'stuck in dock'. They have each deployed multiple times across the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South Pacific in the last few years with only 1 major break down. They are brand new ships it happens to all of them, the good thing is the issue has been noticed and fixed pretty damn fast. So far we have consistently had either or both available to deploy at all times. PoW has been able to deploy with just 8 days notice whilst QE is already having her repair planned out and put into action, to me all this shows is the navy is still competent and efficient despite you doom sayers. Escorts have already begun joining up with PoW as she transits up to the Clyde to load ammunition and form our CSG.
