Love carrier landings. To see how something that can fly so fast, and yet stop in the blink of an eye is amazing.

Those Sailors working the flight deck just fascinated the hell out of me! I was a cook with VAW-123 on the America in '86 and whenever I had some free time I would run up to "Vulture's Row" and just sit there and watch those guys for hours!! Oh how I miss those days!!

its amazing how strong that plane is to be going so fast and stop so fast, youd think it would pull the back end of the jet right off.

The landing speed is about 130 knots, and it stops in about 3 seconds. Then, just in case, they add full power before touchdown in case of missing the wire.

Notice how almost every time the jets land on the carrier they catch the third wire. The pilots are trained to land in the same spot every time. That takes some skill.

Back in the day,the 90s, when a pilot landed on an aircraft carrier for the first time he gets to keep the tailhook . The 6 foot aluminum bar that catches the cable. I wonder if they still uphold that tradition ?

If anyone has ever flown one of these answer a question for me please. Does landing on a carrier ever not scare the crap out of you? I mean, is it even possible to get so good that it doesn't make you super nervous? Thanks (for your service!)

Jelly Donut my boss Trent is an ex navy pilot and instructor with 75 Carrier landings . He said during the day it's not scary at all . But at night and in rough seas its scary as hell . He said today that he has seen the red paint on bottom of the carrier ( the part that normally is under water ) . What other have commented is correct that while trying to land he said you aim for the third wire and you do have the power on in case you don't hook . He has seen pilots forget to drop the hook or hooks break .

Any technical crew or pilot can explain why the F-18 turns rudders inward on takeoff? I'm guessing since its vertical fins are actually tilted, have both rudders turned in lets them perform like a secondary elevator to pitch the plane up.
