The Midway is a now a tourist site in San Diego. Spent about 8 hours wandering the huge ship.

I did too back in 2012... I walked all over that ship and could swear I heard sailors going about their daily chores... So glad they preserved her !!!

I'd like to visit it too if I ever get back to San Diego. It's really sad that the Midway that was integral to our victory in WWII couldn't be saved and was scrapped.

I spend a few hours in 08 perusing too. But spent 11 months in 1972 on her in combat. It was the crew that made her sing.

@@will1951 Hello Shipmate! I was aboard at the same time. I was an OSSN and at that time worked in O/I Division (Operations & Intelligence). I was on her when we steamed into Yokosuka thru Tokyo Bay. Were you on board that day? What was your rate and Division? Darn I miss the Midway Magic. It's on my bucket list to go to San Diego and go aboard again!

My dad was onboard for that cruise, and I have his yearbook. Pretty sure I saw him in the Haiti footage. I still have his wooden machete and wooden cigarette dispenser handmade Haiti tourist stuff. He told a story about one of those new fancy jets being parked in the hanger bay with the wheels un-chocked. The command decided to see how fast their carrier could turn, and plonk went the jet right out of the hanger and into the drink.

The DD at 4:05 info. ~ USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865), was a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy in service from 1945 to 1974. After her decommissioning, she was sunk as a target in 1981. I wonder who sank her Naval guns or Aircraft and where. The second destroyer at 5:38 info. ~ USS Vogelgesang (DD-862) was a Gearing-class destroyer in the United States Navy. She was named for Rear Admiral Carl Theodore Vogelgesang USN.

I see you snuck in a little footage of the FDR (CV-42) for jet handling - wasn't the Midway reconfigured for jets when this was made?

Probably not because I don't see any steam from the Cats (catapults). These planes didn't need a "little push" to get airborne like a jet does.

@@denniswhite166I feel like it's worth noting that the USA midway didn't actually receive steam catapults until its reconstruction in 1970.
