I would so love to see all this in person as my dad served on the Midway, but I'll probably never get to visit California. If I ever do get to go to California, I'll definitely be visiting this aircraft carrier. Thank you for sharing this. My dad used to talk about it, and I've always wanted to see it.

Most of what is blocked off is used as offices and such for the staff and volunteers on board, and not to mention a lot of spaces are just copy and paste of whats on the public tour route.

So thanks from a Uss Kitty Hawk CV 63 sailor alot of my family served, unfortunately my ship was decommissioned & scrapped. Ive been on the Uss Midway tour and hope it never gets the scrapped.
I was lucky to see the Kitty Hawk in Bremerton Mothball fleet some years ago. Beautiful ship even down to the bones.

Nice video! As a Data Systems Technician on the U.S.S. Midway in 1986 I may have maintained that very 642 Bravo in your video (minute 26) among other gear... Believe it or not this beast only had 32k of memory, consisting of tiny magnetic donuts with wires going through them in different directions. Send a current down a wire running in a certain direction imparting a certain magnetic field, then a current down another wire to read that field (one or zero)! If I recall ,the bottom couple of 'drawers' consisted of these magnetic donut arrays. Pretty amazing when you think that, as of this writing, you can buy a solid state drive, the size of a stick of gum, that holds 2 terabytes of data for under a hundred dollars!

Very interesting, thanks. I always wondered what the day to day life of a pilot on a aircraft carrier was like. Were they just wandering around the ship, watching the sailors mop the floors, when not flying, or where they somehow involved with the upkeep and maintenance of the ship too? (Not a question, just me musing.)

I was recently in San Diego for work. The only day I had a chance to go see the midway happened to be the day that Tom Cruise was doing the premier for the new Top Gun.. so I didn't get a chance to see it. My family and I visited many years ago. It’s an amazing ship! I was having a great time, until I encountered the elderly man, that was running a simulator ride at that time. While I was watching, a group of Japanese tourists climbed onboard. You could clearly hear them laughing and screaming and having a great time. The elderly man looked at a group of Caucasian folks, and said ‘they think they’re Kamikaze pilots.’ He wasn’t even joking. The folks that he was talking to, clearly looked uncomfortable, and I was mortified at his comment. My father and his entire family lost everything, when they were put into internment camps during WWII. I have had to endure rude comments thrown my way, most of my growing up years, because I’m American of Japanese descent, born in the early 60’s. I felt this elderly man was being offensive towards these tourists, and it really bothered me at that time.
