As the saying goes .... "You get what you pay for" (mostly). The recent F16 specs are clearly better in most respects (especially range and engine thrust) than MK2, but so is the price tag. Tejas will be a good homegrown technology platform/prototype to jump off for future aircraft like AMCA. Being homegrown can be a huge advantage when it comes to parts, supplies and expertise for maintenance.

Before we start debating whether Tejas MK II is better than F16, let Tejas build some flight and combat records. F16 is proven with decades of actual combat performance record. Tejas MK2 may turn out to be an excellent aircraft but it has not yet been proven. On paper versus actual combat, it is very different. The only variant that has been given the term as the Viper is the Lockheed Martin F-16V, Block 70/72 variants the latest among its type as the 4.5 Generation Multi Role Fighter, while the old variants such as the F-16A/B's and the F-16C/D's are still use the term as the "Fighting Falcon" although the old variants would become Viper, when it could possibly modify or upgrade the said units into the Block 70 Viper configuration.

The specs don't warrant your conclusion. But F16 has a long and overall successful combat hstory; whereas Tejas is yet to be combat proven. On the other hand, F16 was successful in yesterday's wars; tomorrow's wars with electronic warfare, drone technology, AI etc. are going to be something different where theoretically, Tejas being of later vintage should do better. An entirley separate aspect is India's choice, where conditions of use, upgrades and weapons to be exclusively of US approved make and possible future sanctions make the F15 a problematic choice.

A license-built Block 70+ F16 under the "Build in India" programme would probably cost much less than any version of the Tejas, including the "Super-Ajeet" Mk 1. That said, such a cost difference would not justify doing away with much of the country's aeronautical R&D capabilities. It is good to see that huge India has learned the lesson taught by tiny Israel's US-driven cancellation of its Lavie fighter project in the Eighties. Nowadays, Israel builds and markets a wide variety of aerospace subsystems, some indeed descended from those developed for the Lavie back in the days, but it remains unable to manufacture a complete up-to-date combat aircraft in-country, even though it can be argued that the IDF/AF is presently in dire need of at least a medium stealth bomber!

Even if tejas is half decent as F16, the very fact that it's indigenous, gives a lot of relief to India. We should consider the price with specs. Here Tejas MK2 is at par with F16V (may be lacking in few areas), at a lower cost. The cost incurred, will be transferred from Indian Airforce to HAL and not to a different country (except the cost of engine and seat ejection system) if MK2 is purchased

It's a great feet already for Tejas MK2 to be compared to something as lethal as "viper", while Tejas MK2 might fare slightly less than the latest F16, however it would still be a lethal machine better than Mirage 2000s that India has and can easily be a staple as far as single engine fighter aircraft fleet of IAF. The latest Boeing- T7 which is the latest trainer in the list has very poor radar and less composites in air frame hence it's cheaper price of 19 million. So on the market Tejas is the best fighter trainer available. My problem with this video is the propoganda. We used to Jf-17 for the same and now we are doing the same.

This is because it is an improved version of Tejas Mk1, which has been exhaustively tested, and whose behaviour is now well-established. The aerodynamics, stability, performance, and capability of the Mk2 in terms of performing various missions it will be used for, will not be very different from that of Mk1 - only slightly better. I'm surprised the Tejas has such low payload (by weight) when its wingplan has such a big advantage in surface area which should translate to lift. That said, despite a number of features like speed, range and attitude that make the Tejas better than the older design F-16, I'd prefer the Falcon by a long shot for its track record of reliability to accomplish the mission with whatever munitions load is best suited. Nothing was mentioned in fact on the Tejas estimated cost per flight hour, but I'm going to guess the F-16 is probably one of the cheapest planes to fly that exists due to how long systems have been worked out and optimized through experience and being a single engine fighter. Maybe the Tejas can make that altitude feature work in the Himalaysa but if the F-16 isn't bothered by high altitude missions, maybe the Tejas doesn't have an edge here, too.

A slight angle of attack with high drag due to a larger wing will gimp vortex lift generation.
