I'll be going through all of this soon. My engine last flew in 1952, built 1942. Only 156 hours on it though. Going into a 1942 L3B in perfect condition.

That's dangerous.... Lycoming calls for overhauls to be done at 2000hrs or 12 years which ever comes first.... I wouldn't be surprised if it shit out on you in flight..

Good god the first part of this video the “top overhaul” is the prime example of what not to do! You never ever pull all the cylinders of one of these horizontally opposed aircraft engines! Unless you use torque plates in place of the cylinders installing and torquing them as you go! You most certainly do not ever under any circumstances rotate the crankshaft with any cylinder removed or it’s crankcase through bolts loosed! This is how you spin main bearings! Releasing tension on the crankcase through bolts that the cylinders attach to allows the main bearings to get loose and if one turns in the crankcase, even a little bit it will block the oil hole, when retorqued the oil supply is severely reduced or even cut off entirely. The number of GA crashes and close calls caused by bearing failure from after a top overhaul is staggering!

@andyvan56923 жыл бұрын
if they are "overhauling" the engine, why not take the block off the aircraft to, would make accessing the crankshaft easier!!, as any engine overhaul NEEDS to consider the crankshaft MAIN bearings and the oil seals too.
@noblegoldheart850810 ай бұрын
If they’re overhauling the engine with the crankcase still on the engine mounts, that means they’re doing what’s called a top overhaul. Which means they’re only removing the cylinders, but leaving the crankcase on the engine mount.

I don’t understand why they have the head and cyber as one unit. I believe they should’ve had the cylinder and head should be separate like a Volkswagen engine it certainly would make working on the engine easier.

Prevents potential head gasket failure,while it makes for more difficult checking,it makes for greater reliability,as there aint no lay-bys up there if it goes wrong

That is a 1945 Aeronca Champ . The engine is mostly likely a Continental 0-170 / A65 , because the 65hp Franklin and Lycoming engines were introduced later. This video is a good introduction to repair any of these engines, but I would not depend on this video as my only guide to rebuild an engine. But it is great info that will get you started !

Compare this with a period correct automotive V-8, major overhaul, which is by the book at 45 to 50 hours, you will find this is shorter and easier. This build is similar to the Volkswagens, which was ironically based off aircraft design and theory. Moving on to removing an engine from an aircraft or pulling one from auto, which is connected to a transmission, both of which pick up dirt, mud, sludge, and debris from the ground, and you will see aircraft are cleaner ( lets omit those who find mud puddles to land in). Looking up the price of some Rotax, or similar engines, they are around 6 to 7 grand, which is cheaper than a Jeeps. I know this as my daughter has a Jeep Liberty, which uses the Mercedes engine. Be it as it may this is an inexpensive airplane compared to others, try buying Ferrari's Piaggio P160 for 7 mil, and a 4500 dollar/hr cost.

1946 This is a video I had converted from the original 16mm instructional films produced by the U.S. government. Back in 1990, this was converted to a "master" VHS videotape, and around 1995, I had the VHS converted to a DVD. Apparently, whoever uploaded this had purchased one of my old DVD's that we sold back then. We didn't charge a lot for the tapes or the DVD's , as this was a project my son and I did to learn how to build a web page and market a product. Back then, I had to teach myself HTML (HyperText Markup Language) to create my web site. Learned a lot, but didn't make much money! :D
