Predannack Airfield (ICAO: EGDO) is an aerodrome near Mullion on The Lizard peninsula of Cornwall in the United Kingdom. The runways are operated by the Royal Navy and today it is a satellite airfield and relief landing ground for nearby RNAS Culdrose.
The capitulation of France in June 1940 gave impetus to the building of numerous airfields across South West England which was now vulnerable to attack by the Luftwaffe. RAF Predannack was opened in May 1941 as a satellite for RAF Portreath. Accommodation was dispersed over a wide area, with officers accommodated in the Mullion Cove and Polurrian Hotels. The number of personnel reached peak strength of 3,600 by 1944.
Post-war
151 Squadron with its Mosquito XXXs continued flying from Predannack until April 1946,[4] and the following month the airfield closed being reduced to care and maintenance.
After a period of experimental use by Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd under the supervision of Barnes Wallis from 1951 to September 1957, the base was taken over by the Royal Navy on 15 December 1958.[3] The airfield now operates as a satellite airfield for nearby RNAS Culdrose, to handle intensive helicopter operations and as a relief landing ground. There is also a small arms range on the site and the RN Fire Fighting School moved here in 1971.[3]
Current use: Wessex HAS.3 at Predannack Fire School
Predannack Airfield is routinely used for training purposes by helicopters from the Royal Navy. RNAS Culdrose is the Aerodrome Operator and responsible for actively managing and running the satellite airfield.[5]
It is also the practice base of Royal Naval School of Flight Deck Operations, which has a number of dummy aircraft for fire extinguishing practice, and a number of retired airframes for aircraft crash rescue practice, including a Westland Wessex, an English Electric Canberra and two Hawker Siddeley Harriers.
626 Volunteer Gliding Squadron unit operated by the RAF Air Cadets are also a lodger unit based at Predannack Airfield The airfield is also used by Goonhilly Model Flying Club (with MoD permission) and there has been hobby model flying on the field since the 1950s. The site is currently used by the international disaster relief agency Shelterbox as part of its Academy for Disaster Relief.

Great video... I am a semi retired electro mechanical engineer and my mentor was Barnes Wallis whom you probanly know experimented with the Wild Goose at Predannack. I have to say I am very well read of Barnes and bearing in mind his intricate writings of his experiences I am astounded he failed at any time to mention such a significant hazard as the "Predannack Bush Bollox" 😊

Predannack started life as an RAF site during the war. My father-in-law was stationed there when it first started and the they were living in tents in the winter before the huts were built. The mist would be driven in off the sea over the cliffs when you could barely stand up. The navy took over the site after the war when Culdrose was opened.

I thought you might like some information on the Harrier, Matt. The Harrier Jump Jet can only fly vertically for 90 seconds because vertical take-off and landing use an enormous amount of skill on the part of the pilot and also a large amount of fuel. The Harrier can only hover for 90 seconds, in this time it uses 150 gallons of water to keep the engine cool. To save fuel a simple ramp allows the plane to take off on a very short runway.

@29:50 the little silver bayonet connectors are for a fuel level sensor. Your right to think fuel tanks. 30:57 the gold thing is a power resistor. 31:17 the pair of white RADOME covers are for the Radar Altimeter, one transmits a signal to the ground which bounces back and is received by the other. Altitude calculated from the time. 31:31 The Black box is the power supply for the Anti Collision lights. 32:00 Your description of the Pitot/Static system is off. Static is not a backup system. The system works with a pitot static probe/tube that sticks out into the airflow, it's usually a silver pointy tube with a hole in the front end (pitot) and a hole or two in the side (static). The altimeter uses the static pressure and the CSI (Combined Speed Indicator) uses both to calculate the speed of the aircraft depending on altitude. The grey box is an ADS (Air Data Sensor) which would also take the pitot / static pressures and convert them to electronic signals for use by the avionics systems. I've worked on / built Tornado, Harrier, currently Hawk & Eurofighter. :)

My Uncle has a farmhouse right next to Predannack Airfield and on his land is the UK's last remaining anti Aircraft battery station of its type....very much in tact but a little overgrown. A local man also has the type of anti aircraft gun that was used at the site and plans were afoot to regenerate the site as a museum type thing, however ill health prevented this from happening. Hope something happens in the future? He also used to breed beautiful Arab Stallions!

The thing that you reckon was a camera mount poking out of the bottom was the mount for the ALQ anti infra red missile jamming pod. We called it a Disco Ball because it has an infra red source thar spins around inside facetted glass prisms that send out random scattered IR beams to confuse missiles. No. The horizontal stabilizer is fixed and doesn't move. The push valves on the bottom of the lynx are water sediment drain valves to take a fuel sample to check if there is any water in the fuel. Those two chokes are mounted inside the Doppler radar antennas for the Radar altimeter instrument. Pitot head is mounted on the right hand side of the aircraft under the pilot's door. It compares pitot air pressure with static air pressure. What you see flying around are Wildcats which are a further development of the Lynx airframe. These are Mark 9s If they had skids they were Mark1 or Mark7

The consoles in the rear of the Jetstream were where the student Observers sat to do their navigation exercises as part of the Basic Observer Course. The panels contained radios and RDF equipment used for dead reckoning navigation. Most sorties were carried out over the sea south of the Scillies. I did my course there in the early eighties and spent many hours sweating over a chart sat at one of those consoles.

RNAS Culdrose is about 12 miles from RNAS Predannack, the control tower you point out is the Predannack control tower. The airfield is still in use for practice landings and firefighting training, the Royal Naval Fire Fighting School is based at Predannack, you will regularly see them training on the airfield most days. BTW the Westland Lynx is basically an advanced model of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) first developed in 1952 and made famous in Vietnam. The RN retired the aircraft in 2017 and the Army in 2018.

The U2 (dragon lady) is not a glider, but has a very wide wingspan due to it operating at very high altitude. That helped keep it safe from Soviet fighters, but that is no longer the case. Watching them take off is amazing. The Pogo stick wheels fall away, but what amazed me is the speed and noise they can go what seems vertically straight up.
@MathewBall
@MathewBall 2 жыл бұрын
The Lockheed U-2 aircraft or Dragon Lady was a reconnaissance aircraft it was essentially a jet-powered glider. The design was powered by the General Electric J73 engine and took off from a special cart and landed on its belly. It could reach an altitude of 73,000 feet (22,300 m) and had a 1,600 mi (1,400 NMI; 2,600 km) radius.

Ive been here couple of years back. Its not really a plane graveyard. The reason some planes are on there sides is cos its a search and rescue training area. They hide a dummy on a plane and the search and resue have to find them. The planes or on there side as though they have crashed. They do a lot of night training in the area.

No, you dont rev, rev rev the engines on a Lynx by twisting the grip on the collective lever. The fuel control levers are mounted above the windscreen. The lynx has all the controls interlinked which meant as you applied cyclic input it would automatically apply increased collective and apply a corresponding tail rotor input. Whilst you're up on top of the cab. There is a pure silver bearing in the top of the Main Rotor Gearbox. It's worthwhile prising that out and selling it to a jeweller.
