What a great topic! I've been studying aircrete for years and finally made my first block last month. I also poured a part of a slab (for my shed where I keep my lawnmower and some wood). The aircrete turned out really well and I enjoyed the process. HOWEVER, I know reinforcing is going to be vital for having any real success with aircrete. I have been wracking my brain to come with alternatives to steel (everything is so expensive these days). Aircrete is meant to be economical - so I hate to blow the economics of aircrete with the reinforcing. I have not found what I want to use yet, but the mosquito netting and stucco reinforcing are two options I had yet to consider. The trick is finding something on the cheap. These days my eyes are always open to reinforcing options - I even considered plastic construction fencing at one point in time.

Welcome Dustin, Congrats on your first Aircrete projects 👍 The best reinforcment for Aircrete would be fine HSHM PVA Fibers. It makes Aircrete much Stronger and Flexible. When I do any Aircrete projects I use Aircrete Thickening Agen & Air Entrainment Liquid. @@AircreteHarry If you don't mind, I'd like to ask you a question about curing. On my test block, I kept it half submerged in a 5 gallon bucket of water for a month. The half that cured in the water was MUCH more solid feeling and much stronger. On my slab, I wet it down twice a day (am and pm) for the first 2 weeks or so. It seems keeping it wet may be super important. Any recommendations?

@@dustinduke7225 Keeping it wet to cure is important for all concrete. Check out Tyler Ley's KZbin channel for lots of information about that. As for cheap reinforcement, how about straw, like is used in adobe?

@@dustinduke7225 sure - I welcome questions. Solid recommendation as far as for any Aircrete Work is to use the Aircrete Thickening Agent & Air Entrainment Liquid. Over the years I did tons of tests and reserch and I can definitely see the results now by having beein using those products myself. And I'm happy to be able to have these products available on my website now. I also suggest getting a Push Pull Force Gauge Meter. You may see it in my last year's video called: Aircrete Thickener Part 2 - I included a link for TOOLS I personally use & recommend in the description. When you click on that link, scroll down & you'll see the Meter. 👍 Yes, you want your cement to cure slowly. You may also use a blaket that can be made wet (like a moving blanket) to put it over the slab and water it. It will hold moisture and give out moisture to the slab. When you get to make Aircrete Blocks using the additives: Aircrete Thickener & Air Entrainment, use the Meter I suggested to see the difference for yourself. You will then be able to compare the difference in the Strength. 👍 Questions are very welcomed.

Awesome thank you for explaining the reinforcement options. I have always wondered about what to use. Keep it up! I love learning about what you are doing. You briefly mentioned generating energy through the dome shapes. You can get actual electricity from it to light up some LEDs - If you have two separate layers of the metal reinforcement and put a multimeter leads on each layer, you will probably get a voltage reading. pretty cool. I made a cement battery flashlight so I know it works.

You can bend basalt rebar by hearing it. You can use a torch or heating element to do it

Yes, as long as one knows what they are doing. If talking about a few pieces to have adjusted, sure - otherwise for larger quantaties it's more convenient to order with the specified angle request. The beauty of options 👍

Good tip about the mosquito mesh! As far as the basalt fabric, how expensive would it be to cover a dome (say 20') with it? I think I saw you do that in one of your earlier videos, no?

👍 For a 20 foot Dome - it would require almost 2 rolls of Basalt mesh. A couple of years ago it cost $325 for 1 Roll of 150 ft. Prices today may be different.

I want to start using basalt. The secret from what I come to find is the mix of concrete. Raw unwashed sand the dirtier the better with the 3/8 inch aggregate.

If the mesh has openings that are too tight it almost completely separates the layers of masonry, defeating the whole point of it.

Therefore the first cement layer has to be liquidy enough to penetrate the mesh.

Very considerate of you to put out this info! Fiberglass screen may not be alkali resistant (AR). Not an issue in a mostly dry environment, but if not AR and in "cement" that is in a moist environment - like the outside of a dome, could break down over time. All fiberglass and basalt mesh for portland-cement-stucco is AR (or supposed to be). Soaking fiberglass screen in the right sealer could prevent the reaction? Maybe that is what the AR treatment is?

I intend to use the basalt rebar rope and I'm going to use preform blocks to put mine together like an igloo but I will drill the blocks and feed the basalt through it for more strength

I've used basalt fibers (chop) for messing around and it seems like a great product for reinforcement. Another one is Nylon fibers they use at the concrete batch plant that come in 1lb bags. I'm also quite impressed with Trinic's content on KZbin and what they are doing with GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) using up to a 3% by weight addition of Glass Fiber and advanced formulas with 10k psi at 3/8" inch. Glass Fiber are very "needley" compared to basalt or AR fiberglass. Check out their work and you might find new solutions.

I bet that galvanized cattle panels bent into a circle and then layered with mosquito netting would be a good reinforcement for the lower straight portion of the dome wall.

@@AircreteHarry No, I have not used cattle panels to reinforce concrete but I have used them in many ways. Most are galvanized and you can buy them at Tractor Supply. If you attached 2 or 3 panels (each 16 ft long and most 48" tall) with a little overlap they make a good sized circle. You can attach them with zip-ties. I'm age 83 and too old to build a dome but I enjoy watching you build them.

@@AircreteHarry I've always been interested in concrete domes and followed South's domes before I discovered your channel. I live near the Gulf Coast (Florida Panhandle) my area was badly damaged by Hurricane Michael. I used to live in Pensacola and I later learned about the luxury concrete dome house on Pensacola Beach that has survived multiple hurricanes. I've considered using bowed cattle panels to add a protective curved roof to my 40' highcube Conex. If I did that I would use your mosquito mesh idea to make a ferro-cement roof for the conex.

First, amazing knowledge and experience. Thank you for sharing. Second, I'm wanting to build flat panels as building cladding. I'm aiming for 10feet x 32inches, and 1 to 2 inches thick. I could cut the height to 5feet, but I want to try the harder thing first. These panels will have hang vertical and have 3 points where steel or aluminum ledgers meet counter part ledgers on a plywood wall. The have to be strong enough to be moved and hung, and light enough for 2 people to handle the job. THEN, I want to do some interesting surface designs too!! I know, it's a lot. And you might be the only person on earth who could help. The question is how could I work with you on this?

Speaking of "energy", one of my jokes is that the reason women are more "uptight" is that they are loaded with static electricity. Most men pee outside every chance they get and in doing so, they discharge their static electricity. 60 years ago indoor sewer pipes were cast iron and grounded the toilet water and helped women discharge their static electricity. This is intended as a joke but may contain a kernel of truth.
