If you had a feeding chute for your shredder with a built in hot wire cutter, you could just do it all in one step.

@@bentray1908 It could be fashioned like an upside down wood plane with the wire adjustable, but likely taking off 2" into the shredder on each pass of the Styrofoam.

This solution is brilliant. When I watched the video of Stephen Williams it was interesting to see all his attempts. He experimented his way to a decent solution in the end. And it is a perfect example how shared video is inspiring to better solutions... Your solution is just great! Wondering if it is possible to make it higher without using a lid? Then it may be possible to simply empty whole pieces in without preparing the styrofoam for small pieces. Maybe extend the metal part with some simple material up to shoulder height?

Hey Terje, Very well stated. Appreciate you! As far as making a taller barrel - it creates a vortex where the shredded foam pieces just spin around inside the barrel & don't blow inside the bag as wanted. AND Large pieces of foam make the blade get stuck. The lawnmower motor was designed for cutting grass with high RPM - it does not have the power to cut through full size large pieces of foam. It is not worth it based on all stated - replacing parts will cost one at the end.

Re: table saw, suggestion to get a vacuum on that, to catch all the small bits of foam produced by the blade. Keeps them out of the environment and can add to the stock for mixing.

You could build the hot wire directly into the intake port of the shredder.

This is very nice, indeed. I wish it was designed with a bin or a conveyor belt to feed material into it continuously until the bag is full. Since the material is so light, the conveyor could be pretty simple to build. OR, you could create a bin with an air-source at the base to fluidize the styrofoam and shoot it into the shredder. I tend to overly complexity things but it would be interesting to set up a hopper and an automatic feeder system.

So here's my next question: What you would put "with" the aircrete/styrocrete to make it work? Here's why I ask: I figure, what good is it to have won the battle towards cheap and easy house construction, but be forced to spend way more than your actual build to simply put a leak-proof hole in the ground for water storage? There just has to be a way to get around that challenge as well.

Real quick question to anyone that can answer it. When grinding do you normal end up with alot of Styrofoam in drum? Or is it a quantity thing we're it stays the same amount as your grinding?

Many places throw it out - so it helps them & us. 🤝 There are places that offer shredded styrofoam as you mentioned - that involves a cost as well as shipping charges. Shipping today is absolutely INSANE. Options are always good. The more options, the more choices. I've introduced options that include a DIY variety as well as off-grid possibilities. Other places require a minimum order & charge insane shipping fees. We used to suggest a company that offered free shipping for orders over $100 now their shipping charges are almost $800 plus fuel surcharge. Things change daily as we witness. Other than that look at the links James posted in his comment above. Some of the companies have sales & offer decent prices. A few may offer free shipping. As mentioned above prices constanty change. What projects are you working on yourself?
