Lightning Engine Run | w/ The LPG at Bruntingthorpe

I spent a good few hours at the Lightning Preservation Group to film what goes on for an Anti- Deterioration Run (engine runs) from the preparation of the aircraft, towing, engine runs (with reheat) and it also includes a cockpit tour from Dennis Brooks.

Those sounds remind me of the starting up the Draken back when I was a conscript auxiliary mechanic. Draken had a similar engine, an Avon engine copy built by Volvo Flygmotor and it seems to have the same starting procedure as well. The start engine in Draken used isopropylnitrate as its fuel. Quite trustworthy system, but poor conscripts were every so often covered with a thick cloud of burnt fuel, that was effectively working like somewhat depleted tear gas..

Thank you. I went on to fly with the US Navy, but as a kid a Squadron of Lightnings came to Wheelus and I've always been fascinated by them. Cockpit tours are always so telling.

Excellent video. The lightning is my favourite all time aircraft and gutted I've never gotten to see it fly. So really appreciate the LPG doing their runs in the jet and keeping this jet alive.

Very good! The Lightning was a big bird. Esp given the limited fuel supply. I guess most space taken up by the engines, air intake and afterburner ducts.

The Lightning was the first aircraft able to "supercruise". That is, cruise supersonically without afterburners. Concorde was another.

There's no reason why this can't fly. The engines are both fine and controls all work OK. Keeping it in cotton wool only leads to things seizing up, it needs to be back in the air.
