This is the kit that restarted my interest in modelling this Christmas past courtesy of Lidl, I've not stopped since, I think the missus regrets the surprise Christmas gift!

I made this kit to hang from my sons ceiling a few weekends ago. Really enjoyed the build and painting it. One mistake I did make was that I didn't realise the clear bit either side of the back of the canopy were supposed to remain clear. So I painted them. But hanging from the ceiling it's not noticeable. I was dreading the sharks mouth decal, but it went on well. I had to add a small line of black paint to get the bottom to look like it joined, but it looks good.

Nice job, Gaz. The result of airbrushing the Humbrol paints is great. I don't think that I have seen another KZbinr do that. I will try it out. Thanks. 👍

Just take the thinning step by step, easier to add a little more thinner than add more paint!
@ianpope-x9k9 ай бұрын
Using acrylic thinner which contains iso-propyl alcohol will lower the viscosity making the paint flow more easily which would help with airbrushing.

Hi Gary, good video of a nice little kit with no real vices! With a little more airbrush skill I would have been even more pleased with my result. I used Vallejo Model Air as I just couldn't face the Humbrol pot experience...
@allanrichards375210 ай бұрын
I am impressed with how the paint sprayed. Kind of nice vivid colours and a good finish considering you were starting with what looked like slime. This is a nice looking kit and I like the Warhawk family of aircraft. Its a shame the actual aircraft a bit of a bad reputation performance wise.

Gary, it looks like many people are returning to model making. This video contains a few tips, especially your drawing attention to washing the frames before doing anything else. They may not need it, but a stitch in time. I suggest that next time you do a "starter" kit for the information of newcomers, that you go into a more detailed explanation of the instructions contained in each of the step diagrams. Too often, experienced modellers making this type of video simply apply their modelling experience without explanation. I could joke and say that men don't need to follow instructions, but as with any project, the first step is to understand the instructions. If you don't you end up with a wobbly IKEA bookcase and leftover screws. Should cockpit details be painted in the sprue before assembly? Should instrument panel decals be set before the panel is fitted? Another thing I've noticed with your build and that of others of the same kit is that the inside of the wing around the undercarriage isn't being painted before the wing is closed up. Doing that makes it easier for the less experienced/learner. As a positive comment, I found this video, being a "what's in the box" plus "how it's built" to be much more succinct tha spreading those topics over two videos. Good on ya, mate!

Hi Gary. Really enjoyed this video and will definitely look out for this kit. Like Nigel, used to model as a kid and only started again since Christmas. One thing I’m struggling with is canopy masking. I know you used a masking kit for this one. Would appreciate any hints, tips and advice on it. Maybe I’ve been unlucky but I’ve found a lot of the canopies to be the poorest piece of tooling in the kits. And a struggle to get nice or fit well.

Good vid - I have one deep in the stash. More water-based acrylics out there than you might think Gary - I've recently moved to water-based, principally because of the clean up chore and smell of lacquer based products. Mission Models, Ammo Atom and Acrylic Colour, Vallejo Model Air and Metal Color are a few. Still tend to use acrylic thinner and retarder (specifically for water-based) rather than water though, as I think they level better.
@garys_stuff10 ай бұрын
There are many water-based acrylics that also have other stuff in them, which require some kind of thinners even though you can wash brushes with water. I believe Humbrol to be the only *purely* water-based acrylic which means it can be reliably thinned with plain water.
@FinsburyPhil10 ай бұрын
@@garys_stuff Mission Model certainly prefers its own little chemistry set of thinner and poly, but it does clean with water. The new Atom range I have successfully thinned with water. It's lovely paint.

I like this kit. Had one for a christmas present. How did the humbrol paints go down through the airbrush? We saw you mix the paint then thr next shot was the complete model. Did it take several coats of very thinned paint?
@garys_stuff10 ай бұрын
Hi Christopher, the paint took two coats for the blue and the stone and one for the dark earth. It went surprisingly well.

Cheers Gary. I've never really had that much luck airbrushing humbrol. Brush painting them is normally ok.

@@christopherevans6752 not sure if the paints in my set were the Gen 2 versions or not - I think they have better thinning properties than the older ones. I understand there is no reliable way of telling from the pots!

cool kit, especially for £5 or whatever. I gave mine a red nose
@leewhite219510 ай бұрын
I read somewhere that the nose should be red.With airfix only supplying 4 colours,I guess the red had to not be included.I think they should perhaps include these kind of details in the instructions but I suppose that's veering away from 'starter kit ' territory.The thing that bugs me about this kit is the window panels behind the cockpit.If they just sit on top the fuselage skin then what's the point of them?
