@@garys_stuff 2nd load in the dryer and now can crash out. Not bad considering didn't get home until 3hrs ago. Fortunately have trained the boss to not call before 11am and drive mostly late afternoon/evenings. Your timing was impeccable tho, kept me from drifting off LoL. Learned a bit from the bonus history, overall timing of the parts was very good, editing kept the major points and the gotcha moments in a nicely wrapped up bundle. Kudos 👍 Quickly becoming a mainstay.

It amazes me how prolific you are, do you finish one kit per week? And the editing must be time consuming too. I agree, this kit is overall very nice, but the cockpit sidewall detail is nonexistent. Not on the same level as their later 1/48 P-40 and Ju-87, and definitely not up to 2022 standards. It will be interesting to see Arma Hobby's Mk. IIC. And Eduard will release their 1/48 Hurricane, but it will take years.

Yes, at the moment it is one kit per week. This may change by reason of the subject matter - sometimes I may take on something that needs two weeks - but generally one per week is OK along with editing and researching the history, and doing Figure Friday, and Monday Matters. Go to keep myself busy!!!

I enjoyed the video. For extra history Wing Commander Ian Gleed wrote “Arise to Conquer” one of the first accounts of the air war. It was published in 1942 and is still on sale. I inherited my 1942 edition from my father. It’s especially interesting as it covers the Battle of France. Gleed was shot down and killed in 1943 over North Africa. Airfix did a version of his Spitfire Vb trop in 1/24 with the personal registration I R G.

@@garys_stuff I have read two Hurricane veteran's quotes, the latter from Peter Townsend (once engaged to Princess Margaret). The first was 'The Spitfire was a racing car, the Hurricane a tank. I know which I'd prefer to go to war in!'. Townsend said 'The Hurricane was composed almost entirely of non-essential parts. I know as I've had all of them shot off!' As he survived the war unscathed it seems he was right :)

Being a military history geek (OK I have an MA in the subject) I looked up the squadron codes: AA was 134 Squadron operating the Hurricane IIB. LK was 87 squadron flying the I from 1938-42, overlapping the IIC 1941-44. RF was the famous 303 (Polish) Squadron which flew Hurricane I aircraft in the Battle of Britain. JJ was never a fighter squadron.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
The two Js are there because there's one on each side - RF-J - likewise LK-A for the other markings. From what I can see JJ was used by 274 Sqn RAF in 1944-45 flying the Spitfire IXF as part of 2 ATAF.

@@garys_stuff D'oh.. I missed the first sentence on the Wikipedia entry 'No. 274 Squadron RAF existed briefly in 1918 and 1919 as a patrol and bomber squadron, //and served in World War II as a fighter squadron.// '. It was in action by 1940 flying Hurricanes, but as you say by 1944 it had Spitfire IX Fs as part of 2TAF. In 1940 they were YK though. Only JJ in 1944 onward, again as you said, so a Hurricane of 274 ought to have YK markings.

Wow -- lots of detail and you've brought it out well! I love the aggressive bulldog stance of the 'Cane, ready to fight. The Spit was pretty but always appeared kind of fragile. I have this in a Battle of Britain diorama set. I should dig it out and start working on it. Cheers!

Spitfire is the easy and obvious choice. Iconic and, a true emblem for Great Britain, True connoisseurs love the Hurricane even more though.

Also, I was at school at Kingston, then worked directly opposite the old Hawker Siddeley factory. I learnt aerodynamics in a shed that was once used by Tommy Sopwith to build Camels, I believe! I do have the new Spitfire XVIII on order for the channel, but I have a need for some more Hawker in my life...

@@garys_stuff Sydney Camm evolved the Hurricane through a wonderful series of biplanes as you certainly know, and then on to typhoon and tempest whereas the spitfire was a revolutionary all metal monocoque as you know from the schneider trophy machines. The very first Mitchell plane he named Spitfire was a rather thick bent winged monoplane with a trousered fixed undercarriage but then , you already knew that too.... Anoraks together eh ?😉
@julianmhall
@julianmhall Жыл бұрын
@@garys_stuff IIRC Sidney Camm worked for Tommy Sopwith (you can sort of see the Camel's hump in the Hurricane fuselage) so his heritage was in designing fighter aircraft as opposed to R J Mitchell's heritage of performance aircraft. Both coming to the same problem from opposite ends. Camm, 'How do I get eight guns as fast as possible to the enemy?', Mitchell, 'How do I go as fast as possible, and carry eight guns?' No /real/ fault with either philosophy, but IMHO the Hurricane made the better /fighter/. The Spitfire's wings were too thin to be a stable gun platform, and the guns were unevenly spaced. The Hurricane had thicker wings and guns in one bank on each wing, so was IMHO more stable.

@@randlerobbertson8792 IIRC Camm even lived long enough to be part of the Harrier design team.
