Instead of using a bore snake or a cleaning kit rod with brass brushes or the old cut coat hanger and cotton and chance scratching the rifling or something like that with a .177 break barrel you can use the q-tips like a cleaning pellet and shoot a few out. They fit snug so it wouldn't be considered a dry fire and it works great. Only take 5 to 10 q-tips depending on how dirty your barrel is.. once I broke my air rifle in with a whole tin of 250 pellets I got groups of 5 shots inside the diameter of a dime then around 500 or so pellets later the grouping started to open up. Then a quick cleaning with the "q-tip cleaning pellets" and 10 shots to season the barrel it went right back to grouping like it should

Agreed, no need to overcomplicate this. I use thick fishing line to pull an oily patch through the bore a few times and then pull a clean patch through a couple of times. Easy, plus it rarely needs doing.

Hello mate, I am new to airgunning and I'd like, if you have the time, to guide me a little. I came in conclusion to the same cleaning method as you mentioned. Using a thick fishing line, making a knot on it, going through an oily patch first and later a dry one, and pulling out straight. I haven't done this in action yet, just thinking it. Do you use something as a "guide" with the same caliber as the rifle's barrel (for example a .22/5.5mm cleaning pellet - for a .22 cal rifle) before putting the patch on the fishing line, so to be a good touch of the patch inside the barrel in order to clean it well even the rifling of the barrel. Cheers

@@Spyros_Mazarakis I can't say that my way of barrel cleaning is the best but it is simple and it works for me. I've been using a length of 60lb fishing line (Drennan 'greased weasel' shock leader) with a loop tied at one end. I thread the free end of the line down the bore, cut a piece of 'Napier Rifle Clean' material to make a patch, place it in the loop and then pull it through the bore (breech to muzzle direction). I don't use any guide, just cut the patch to a size so it's tight in the barrel but not too difficult to pull through. I trap the line on the floor with my foot at the muzzle end, keep it all lined up and pull on the barrel. The crown is unharmed. Add a couple of drops of gun oil to the first patch and then repeat with dry patches.

I once saw a guy who used that nylon string they use in weed whackers and edgers. It's soft enough that it won't damage the rifling, but rigid enough to feed down the barrel without hanging up. One thing about this technique is if you have one of those plastic muzzle brake suppressor thingies on the end of your barrel, you'll need to insert a plastic drinking straw [like the ones you get at McDonalds] into the baffle section so you can thread the snake past the baffles without snagging them. Most brakes have an indicator ring or flange on the exterior that show how far down to insert the straw until it gets to the actual edge of the rifle barrel.
@Beesa10
@Beesa10 2 жыл бұрын
@@misterkaos.357 I've used a length of heavy monofilament shock leader line with a loop tied on one end. I break the barrel open, thread the non-loop end of the line down the bore from the breach, catch a cleaning patch in the loop and pull it through. I point the barrel down, stand on the the line which is poking out of the muzzle, then pull the barrel up whilst keeping everything aligned to minimise any wear on the crown. It makes a cool sound

I just purchased my Gamo break-barrel .22 a few weeks ago. I had squirrels eat a hole in my roof last year. I just put a new roof on my home this year and i was not having anymore of that bullshit. Well end or story i have dispatched 7 squirrels 4 chipmunks and 1 raccoon as of 4-28-20. I have a shitload of firearms and keep them very well cleaned and in good maintenance. However an air-gun is new to me. I want to thank you for taking the time out of your day to teach me the proper maintenance of cleaning! I recently subbed to you and will continue to watch your videos!

I've been cleaning my airgun barrels with a "Crown Saver" from Mac-1 for probably 20 years now. It's basically a double nylon cord that goes through a plastic hose with a loop at one end to hold a cleaning patch; the soft cord and hose protect the barrel rifling and the muzzle crown. You insert through the muzzle end and out the breech (if at all possible, otherwise you have to go the other way), put the appropriate size cleaning patch through the loop, and apply a "degreaser" type cleaner, like Simply Green, which is pretty much what the Beeman branded degreaser is or was. Then pull it through the barrel... repeat with a clean patch, until it comes out clean. I have been using Finish Line Krytec bike chain wax lubricant on my pellets also for many years, since someone discovered how well they work, and keep the barrels clean; you don't really need much of this to lube a tin or more of pellets... lubed pellets really help keep the barrel lubricated and clean. I would not use any kind of firearms cleaner or solvent on my airguns. I've sort of been out of the airgunning hobby the past few years, due to retirement, and home improvements, so I may be behind a bit on some of the latest and greatest airgunning advancements, but I'm hoping to do more shooting now... until another home improvement project comes up ! Here is a link to Mac-1's Crown Saver: www.mac1airgunshop.com/jl-crown-saver-p/jlcs.htm

Great review Mr Cyclops Personally I wipe my rifles down, with a silicone cloth, each time they are handled. Maintaince on as needed basis. Where barrel cleaning is concerned, I tend to shy away, if it isn't broken it doesn't need it, in my opinion. I'll regularly inspect the bores though with a torch and visual aid Regards

Great video! Well i dont have bore snake of that length (.22 /.38/9mm hand gun lengths ). I do have the Umerex .177 /.22 rifle cable type kit. And i only use a Nylon brush, as you mentioned /suggested ,no metal brush especially around seal on breakbarrel . So, i still aware not to jam the brush in and out by rubber seal with bristles contact seal. And of course , Hoppes bore cleaner works great to disolve lead/dust /old oil build-up. Air guns are not as bad cleaning firearms but, do need after alot of use..And i possibly get/try a bore snake cleaner , looks easier than using several patches too. Thanks .

Many competition shooters never clean the barrel if they are shooting regularly. i don't do it because lead cleans the barrel, any added lubrication makes rifle less precise until lead cleans it. If barrel is gets so shiny that rifling can't be seen well shoot some pellets to get it clean again. Airguns with high power might need some barrel cleaning but i'm not sure that is really needed if gun is used often...

What a coincidence....I've just got back from shooting and cleaned my rifle on the outside with silicone, I know it's good and safe as I've been using it on my £2,500 pound mountain bikes components as it lubricates somewhat but more importantly it helps with cleaning as the dirt doesn't stick as much plus it doesn't harm the finish on the components, so it's good for my gun then. Thanks for the vid 👍👍

If your barrel has one of those plastic suppressors on the end a good way to protect the internal baffling is to insert a plastic drinking straw into the brake before feeding the boresnake through. This works quite well with the nylon cord type breech loading snakes. In fact, I think they sell one that comes with its own tube, called a Crown Saver.

Brother Joe, The Bigman here. That rifle you cleaned, looks an awful lot like mine...lol I usually clean my barrels when brand new or new to me then not until accuracy starts to drop. Many say not to use hoppes. Others never use 3in1. I always used hoppes and rem oil...If you are worried about harming barrel/orings etc Ballistol works a charm. Boresnakes are great but a length of weed wacker string with a loop tied on the end, fed through the barrel with a patch or two placed in the loop with whatever solvent you use pulled back through your barrel works. Also, I use a straw in the end of the barrel to keep from damaging the crown. There are as many ways to clean your barrel as there is to skin a fox...lol Be well my friend!

When a pellet goes through the barrel, it is pretty darn sure to remove all crud that might be there, and, in the absence of powder gases, all that it leaves behind is its own crud, every time you shoot. Therefore, what is the point of cleaning an air rifle barrel? I remember having seen a video where Tom Gaylord, who is some kind of an air rifle guru, says the same thing.
@misterkaos.357
@misterkaos.357 2 жыл бұрын
Some people claim the pellets shoot faster when you clean the barrel first. I guess the main reason to clean the barrel is to remove any special coating the manufacturer might add to protect it against corrosion during overseas shipping. A lot of European and Asian imported rifles have it in there. Sure you could probably clean it out by firing 20 or so lightly oiled alloy pellets through it, but it seems like a waste of ammo.
