The key is being concentric and varying the grind angles helps achieve that. For the non lathe guy this is a method that has been around forever. Get ready for the machinist troll comments. Thanks for sharing.

I use a carbide crown cutting tool for firearms, cost 150 bucks and cuts machine quality 11 degree target crowns. When I use the brass screw method I use diamond paste as it cuts ultra clean crowns. Then I polish with a little 000 steel wool and bingo you have a perfect crown. Anyone that thinks the brass screw method doesn't cut perfect crowns is flat wrong. Machine cut crowns come out exactly the same as a properly down brass screw crown. I prefer the carbide crown cutter as it takes about two minutes from start to finish to have a flawless 11 degree crown. I have brass screw method crowns on sub half minute bench guns (powder burners) when i had tiny nicks in the crown and the barrel was still printing average 5 shot groups in the 3/8th inch range (that was a custom .22-250 with a 600 round old Hart barrel. And didn't have time to send the barrel off for recrowning so I did it with the brass screw. After that I had no doubt that it cuts 99.9% the quality of crown as a lathe cut crown) the soft steel on airgun barrels the brass screw method is so easy and produces flawless crowning jobs. If you have a lot of airguns and want them to have 11 degree target type crowns the 150 bucks for the crown cutter is a worthy investment, 2 minutes and you have a lathe quality crown and anyone can do it as it's pretty much fool proof. If you follow what was stated in this video the brass screw method will give you a perfect crown with a little more work. I suggest Diamond paste tho as it cuts a more polished crown and does so faster and always finish it with a piece of 000 or 0000 steel wool to get a bright perfectly smooth crown. It is ultra important to follow the varying circles always keeping the drill moving in varying size circles or you will cause exactly what he said and it will happen QUICKLY.

You should run the drill, alternating in both directions to minimize any burr on the sides of the lands. Contact force should be just enough to stabilize the stone or screw head, so they don't skate off, or chatter.

Admittedly, I am new to delving deeper into the airgun mechanisms but I am familiar with some of the issues with the powder world. They too place great emphasis on crowning a barrel but this is where the similarities seem to end. Great emphasis is placed on the chamber. How much the bullet has to jump before contacting the Lands is tightly controlled. I do not see much emphasis in PCP chambers or how much the pellet or slug is or is nor in contact with the rifling of the barrel. The logical answer would be that it makes little difference in accuracy in the airgun world. It sure seems like all those 90 bends must cause great turbulence behind the push of the pellet. I can see designers trying to keep the compressed gas’s travel short before it begins its pushing duties.I see diagrams of the mechanisms and valves but none so far dealing with how the pellets are held. Just curious.

What size is the stone ball bit for the Dremel? As in what width is it? I would like to crown my Avenger barrel because I can see some clipping on it from the pellet. I already Harmonically balanced the barrel with an O-ring which helped but I know it's clipping sometimes because of no crown. Do you recommend using the stone bit if so would you know the side? Would a countersink bit be too aggressive? Tanks in advance sir. You've been a heap of help with my Crossman's and Avenger.
@AirVelocitySport3 жыл бұрын
The stone Dremel bit is 1/2". The most important thing is that the re-crowning be concentric. The best way is to use a lathe to be 100% sure. The technic used in my video has worked well for me. I would not use anything too aggressive because it could ruin you barrel muzzle. If you ruin the muzzle end you can always go to a person with a lathe and cut an inch off and recown the muzzle. The only bad part to cutting the last inch is loading the choke which would make it a consistent groove diameter which some say is better for slugs.

Yes, both the avenger and the liberty seem t share the same barrel. You may not need to to crown it if you are happy with the accuracy. Once I crowned my liberty I was able to achieve sub MOA at 100 yards.

@@AirVelocitySport Did you ever get a regulator on the mega? I got a box full of springs that I have experimented with and made them too short. That way I don't waste any air and it have a couple of sets that I double the springs together and get about 80 shots with Hades. Very effective around the farm without causing any damage. I also keep the power adjuster less than half. I'll switch to the high-power springs when I get ready to test your slugs but the monsoons are horrendous ☹️

Thanks for another excellent video on how to improve a rifle with simple tools. Would fitting an external moderator/silencer also resolve this problem as this would dissipate the airflow as the pellet leaves the barrel???
@AirVelocitySport5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that a moderator would make a difference in accuracy. Once the pellet leaves the barrel and crown I believe any deviation caused by the crown would probably not be corrected be a moderator. Just my opinion.

Doing that to the back of the barrel can reduce some pellet picky issues too!! :-) :-) only a smooth rounded funnel shape :-) And lube the pellets a tiny bit
@wickedreelz50285 жыл бұрын
Giving a super smooth leade is a smart idea and should be done to all barrels. I did a leade smooth and polish on all my guns. Even my FX Smooth twist and Smooth twist X barrels benefited from a nice leade job. Run a few pellets down even a match grade barrel and with a magnifying lens look for scuffing and you will almost always see it polish the leade and repeat and you will see the scuffing go away and that absolutely tightens groups at longer ranges and will make your gun happier with more pellet choices.

Another , better way to keep the crown central is as follows - Find an old exhaust or inlet valve from an engine that the stem fits the barrel bore snugly, oil the stem and insert into the barrel with valve fine grinding past , then lap the valve in the usual lapping method, result is 100% centred chamfered crown.

would it not better to use a tool made for it ,a Triebel crowning tool for ecxample. the german guntool firm makes the crowning tool with bushing that will fit the inside of the barrel.specify caliber , if a gun has high pressure at the end of the barrel (like firearms), the high pressure gas will go around the base of the bullet ,if the crown is not even or out of angle the pressure will push the pullet to one side, in a airgun a burr is more bad then a out of angle crown. also if the base of a bullet is out of angle or a chip out ,it as bad as if the muzzelcrown is incorrect

Glad it works for you. Not a good plan though. Find someone with a lathe.
@Igotknobblies4 жыл бұрын
The only way to do this is in a lathe using a skiving tool. That is, the actual act of cutting is from the bore outwards using the sharpest possible tool. This gives the least possibility of kicking up a burr. The barrel needs to be concentric with the bore of the lathe and the cut at 90° with the bore, recessed in the end of the barrel. Hand cut with a Dremel? I think not!
