I have found out when painting wood with aerosols that sanding is key also steel wool is a lot of help and a good old fashioned tack cloth ,prior to paint.

Great tips! I do like clear finishes, but painting is my least favorite part of woodworking, although I've gotten better out of necessity. I noticed you applied the shellac before the top coat. Isn't bare wood normally primed and painted? Would using a regular primer leave the wood unsealed then.

Good question. There are some good aerosol primers out there, but most suck. You just need to seal the wood. you dont want the topcoat to soak into the wood. you want the topcoat to sit on top of the wood without getting absorbed. thats the point of a good primer or sealer, and thats how you get a glassy smooth finish. Your primer/sealer can be clear or tinted depending on many different factors. Paints and primers are very different depending on the intended application. A general house painting primer or top coat is going to be very different from a fine woodworking primer and top coat. So some of the terms of "primers, sealers, paints, lacquers, etc" get mixed up in all these different applications
