6:39 I painted or varnished A LOT of interiors as a carpenter/remodeler. Why? Because I could control the end results- I could do two things by painting and finishing my own work: 1) if I did an excellent fit and finish and the painter doesn’t have an impeccable quality that day (or worse- the homeowner paints it!!) the finish obscures my good work. Good paint isn’t noticeable in specifics, but the “wow!” factor is both an emotional response (good) and an intellectual response (customer is proud of what he or she got for their money); and 2) if a few things aren’t exactly “right” - and the bigger the project the more likely you will find you had an ‘oops’ or several- a good painter (you) can recover that with some attention. But even good painters care more about themselves than they do your work whereas you care deeply about the final impressions. And you can control that result and eliminate the “why didn’t my painter fix that?!!” by finishing your work yourself.

Does the accelerator make the finish a bit less thin or does it just decrease the dry time? I’m having some issues spraying Enduro Var on vertical surfaces and the piece doesn’t lend itself to being sprayed horizontally.
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response. General Finishes products are thin so that you can spray them out of any crappy sprayer and it will lay flat.... But in turn, it makes them run on vertical surfaces. The accelerator speeds the dry time up, but does not thicken the product. General Finishes does not sell a thickener, but other water based companies do. For example, when spraying General Finishes products vertically, I personally add some thickener from Renner and it works great. But when you thicken a product, you need a really high pressure sprayer and a fine finish tip to make it lay flat. Like an airless sprayer running at almost 3k PSI, and a tritech 306 tip. There's no easy catch all to finishing... You're always trading one thing for another... Ease of use for versatility. Cost for speed. Etc. Thats why so many woodworkers use things like Rubio Monocoat or Odie's Oil.... They're slow compared to spraying, but hard to screw up with a good appearance, and low skill required.

What about for wood on exterior houses
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Ready patch is interior and exterior. You can use that for painted projects. I'm not sure about unpainted lumber... Maybe some "post finishing putty". There's companies like "Color Putty" that make oil based wood colored putties that you can't coat over. We've been using those a lot. They are great products.

I was having problems with the torque on cutting. I thought it was the motor at 1st so I upgraded it to 220. But the problem is not the motor. It’s the fence off throwing the wood off and cause pressure on blade. I keep on having to adjust the fence it get to the point of annoying that I have to constantly double check my tape front and back. I have all same issues.
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that! I have learned a little trick to stop the problems with the double point fence. Pull back towards you before pressing the fence handle down, and it will really help with the angle consistency.

In regards tool brands you can also purchase corded versions of name brand for the similar price as a cheaper cordless brand you just have to deal with inconvenience of a cord. I recommend doing this for heavy used tools until you can upgrade because you can always use the extra power that cheaper brands might not provide.

Wow man, you really nailed it with this video... we need more real advice like this. @2:03 As a Makita guy - I was torn between choosing Milwaukee or Ryobi brad nailer because of the huge price difference but i finally went with the Milwaukee for the exact reasons you just said.. As a wannabe full time woodworker (MEANING: At the moment i don't have access to a shop yet...) the Milwaukee tool functions better on angles, the quality of the holes are better, there is less marring, it feels better in the hands and while shooting it, its going to last longer and has a 5 year warranty just incase... its a no brainer for professionals selling projects - just get the Milwaukee (don't buy DeWalt nails! it doesn't like them, get Metabo HPT/ Hitachi nails - they use a weaker glue that works better) If your just a DIYer making stuff for your house and your not selling your projects then buy the Ryobi.. In fact if the Ryobi comes down to $100 CDN in price i will probably buy it for a spare for the heck of it and maybe to compare them because it is still a great gun.
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Hey man. Thanks for watching and commenting. Ya, that Milwaukee 18g nailer is awesome. I think it's the best on the market right now. And keep up the consistent work. I started my shop in the corner of my parents garage. Very small. Just stay consistent and keep reinvesting in yourself. It will happen for you.

Doesnt the wax mean that its greenwood for turning?
@quietinspirationcreations34482 жыл бұрын
Not in this case, many exotic woods sold commercially are waxed on all sides, not really sure why, other than to protect it during transport and storage. I buy a lot of turning blanks, like the long square pieces he had, and they're almost always waxed, it may also prevent warping and splitting with varying humidity levels in different countries.
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Great point from Quiet Inspiration Creations. Yes, some species of woods are very difficult to dry without cracking. Theoretically the slower a wood dries the more controlled it will be with less cracks. My assumption is that the wax was applied to let the wood dry very slowly and prevent cracks, since it is such an expensive wood... A single lost wood blank due to cracks would be the cost equivalent of like 500 wax applications lol.

nice video, wondered if you could help with a project i'm working on. i've made new maple kitchen cabinets and would like a little amber color. thought i would used enduro var-II but it's my understanding enduro poly is a little more durable but doesn't amber. can i spray enduro poly over enduro var-II? also could i used the sanding sealer under the enduro var-II and would i still get the amber tone i'm looking for that the enduro var-II produces?
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Good questions. Enduro Var 2 is not intended to go over a sanding sealer. Enduro Var is intended to change the color of the wood like a light colored stain, just like oil finishes will do. So you would use Enduro Var first. Sand VERY lightly, and quickly, then use a heavy coat of sanding sealer and sand to smooth. Then use your top coat like the Enduro Clear Poly, pre cat lacquer, or the conversion varnish. If you don't get enough color out of the Enduro Var, then you need to use a stain instead of the Enduro Var. Enduro Var CAN be used as every layer of a finish, but it doesn't sand as well or build film thickness as well as the sanding sealer... And the sanding sealer is much cheaper than the Enduro Var. The only economical place to use Enduro Var is simply for the first coat on raw wood to give a slight amber color before adding other finishes.

In correct my friend I have dewalt as well as think and also Parkside I have had my Parkside for years with constant use. For less than 3\4 of the cost don't knock the cheaper brands and don't even think of buying festool
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Lol. Festool tools have their place. But they are not a requirement at all. I have many Festool tools. But often people buy Festool because they think they are required for making the best product... Not the case at all. But some Festool products like an MFT, Domino, or their sanders are truly in a class of their own. But they are not required at all to do beautiful work. They just make the work a little bit faster and easier.

What tip size do you use, and what sander was that? Thanks
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Out of any HVLP, LVLP or Conventional gun, any tip size should work for General Finishes products because they are already very thin. If you are going to be using an airless then you want to use a fine finish tip like a Tri Tech 406 or something like that. And I was using a Festool Cordless RTS sander. It's an amazing paint sander.
