Overbooking should be illegal ... Any airline caught gets shutdown.. I know a lady with newborn baby who was going to fly to New zealand for a last minute funeral and her plane had like 250 people booked for a 200 seat plane and she was left out waiting in airport for 30 hours with a newborn till next flight and missed the funeral.. Disgusting.

+Ben Jay They should not be shut down at all.. Then that screws over all passengers. If caught the flight should be free for everyone on the plane, at the airlines expense.

They don't want to lose, (the airline), so they overbook, but have no problem making the customer lose their flight and in some cases the customer loses financially because it was a business trip or something else important. . Just money that matters. Big shock there. All these videos just show you what companies are like, which is maximum profit at our expense. We've become a commodity , not individuals ,because now there are too many of us. Overpopulation means more diseases, as there is now, and we've become cattle to the corporations.

Gplay Bangladesh That...is so not true, haha! Up until last month, I used to work at a call center (I'm American) for Bank of America, seen as the worst and greediest bank in the US. Frankly, I didn't care about any of that. I was there to do a job and make a paycheck. I myself tried to be as moral as I could and would sympathize with a customer's frustration where necessary...and then get ready for the next call. I'm working this job to pay bills, the feelings of the CEO isn't my concern. I neither agree nor disagree with upper management; let me do my 8 to 10 hours so that I may go home. At least, that was until I realized just how much I've always hated customer service work and suddenly quit one day, but that's another story.

When I was younger my mother and two younger sisters and I was on a plane trip to New Jersey. I look out my window and watch as the workmen put luggage in and I see my little sister car seat left on the ground and not even touch and they just leave it there. I point it out to my mother and she said they would put it on but they never did. I watch the plane leave without my 2 year old sisters car seat. They said that it was impossible to get it back and they didn't even give us money to buy a new one. She's two years old SHE NEEDS that car seat to be safe while we drive. My mother and I were so angry and upset because we had to go out of our way to buy another one. This wouldn't have happened if they had just put it on, I saw them touch it and look at it multiple times!

I've been on over 30 flights and never has the plane been delayed or stranded at the airport. If you going to go somewhere, book with a reliable airline, not just the cheapest one you can find. Iberia, British Airways, Emirates, Air China, and KLM have all been stupendous in promising excellent customer service. I'm definitely satisfied.

I live in Sweden and I can say that we have pretty good laws regarding flight delay. We were flying from Amsterdam to Luleå with stop over in Norway and Stockholm. In Norway they announced us that the flight to Stockholm delayed for about 1.30 hrs. When we were already halfway to Stockholm one of the fly attendant informed us that we could not make our flight from Stockholm to Luleå and they had booked us the next flight. From our original arrival time in our final destination was 3 hrs late. The next day we wrote to the airline and asked for compensation. After 3 weeks we got an answer and they informed us that we would be received a compensation for €400 per passenger which means €800 for both of us as well as with any other cost such as hotel, food, and taxy if any. Everything went smooth with claim and we are happy with our laws here.

An airline ticket is a contract between a passenger and the carrier. It's called the Contract of Carriage. A travel agent must furnish a copy upon request. I carried it with me in my carry on bag. People have rights, but airlines will not act.. until handed the Contract of Carriage. I used it once and was compted for hotel, transportation and meals.

When a ticket or package is purchased/sold, it's a contract between BOTH parties. Airline delay up to 2 hours is reasonable; beyond 2 hours is failure and compensation should be given.

Sunwing can rot. I dealt with the chief of their customer service department thinking I'd finally get some results, and I was severely disappointed. Sunwing screwed up twice and ruined 1/2 of my vacation (including giving me horrible food poisoning on the airplane) and she was absolutely unconcerned. I am really careful when wording my emails and I never send them when angry. I write, then review the next day to make sure I 100% stick to the facts, so I know she wasn't just responding to me being a jackass. I hope the company goes under. The disrespect was incredible. They are one of only 2 companies I've ever hated in my 42 years on this planet.

I had the worst experience with American Airlines prior to hurricane Irma. My flight was on Thursday 7 Sept, hurricane was not going to hit until Saturday. Flights with other airlines at the same gate were able to take off, as well as flights the next day to my same destination all left. My Flight was ultimately cancelled after hours of delays and numerous gate changes. I was stuck in Miami for an impending hurricane... they rescheduled my flight to the following Thursday 14 Sept, which was also cancelled and pushed to Sunday 17 Sept! That's an additional 10 days of hotel expenses, food and car rental (drive the heck out of Miami for evacuation).... I had to book with another airline 1 day prior to my rescheduled flight with AA because they were unreliable (some folks were cancelled 4 times!)... and could not risk staying any longer as I just could not afford it. Upon landing in my country, I called AA customer service for a reimbursement of my cancelled flight and the CSR said that my ticket is non refundable even though they cancelled on me TWICE. Then the CSR had the audacity to say "well, y'know... hurricanes..heh"....... but the reason for cancellation was not due to the weather conditions, it was due to their staff. I did not even ask for compensation for expenses incurred during my 10 day delay... and this is the way I was treated?! Even gold, platinum and elite members were treated the same way. I'm utterly disappointed....

About a year ago I was flying with KLM. After having the same flight cancelled and rebooked 5 times in two weeks, the sixth time it was not cancelled. I got to the airport at 11 pm and the flight was at 6am. At 4 am the check-in opened and there I was told that my tickets don't exist and that they had actually cancelled this specific flight route months ago. I was shocked. I waited until 8am and called customer service and luckily they got me another flight with another airline (one way). But I had booked round-trip flights and never got my money back for the flight back....and had to buy another ticket out of pocket

I can sympathize here. Last year I was flying with Delta (in US) to the UK in order to study, and the flight was cancelled after hours of delays on my second leg which was 500 miles from my home. I was one of the lucky few on that flight who could rebook before the airline just stopped working with people. That was by midnight (my flight was at 7 pm originally) then, since I had to find lodging for the weekend (that's right the next flight wasn't for TWO DAYS) I then went down to get my bags at the claim...and that's when I understood the hell I was in. Thousands of bags were scattered at the claim, children sleeping on luggage, a pregnant woman asleep on a luggage belt, and hundreds if not thousands of others waiting in lines, etc. I waited to talk to baggage assistance for three hours in a line constantly on the edge of a riot, only to find that the woman at the desk didn't even work at the airport, but was pulled to help from another nearby one. She told me my bags were on the plane, and that I couldn't have them, but when I would be leaving the US, they would go with me. I left then soon after. Finally after days (with only one change of clothes) I made it onto the plane, and eventually landed in the UK...but my bags were still somehow in New York. I had checked at the customer service terminal every leg of my journey, and the airline lied and said my bags were on the plane. So for an ENTIRE WEEK I had to try and survive in a country I had never been before, by myself at the ripe old age of 20 with nothing but my passport, my laptop, and the clothes on my back. Utter. Hell. I had been assigned my dorm room, and had to sleep on a bed with no sheets, pillow, etc. Had to wash my clothes in the sink wearing the towel robe that a school admin bought for me out of pity. I was MISERABLE. You will never catch me flying on Delta again unless something drastically changes. They didn't reimburse me anything at all, only covered the delivery of my luggage that they had lost in New York. They didn't care about me at all, or help me. I barely escaped JFK before flooding started and riots nearly broke out. Probably the most horrific experience of my life.

The reason the airfares are low, is because the airline overbooks the flight, plus, statistically a number of passengers never show up for their flight (late, emergency, etc) thus loosing the company money.

Frick Delta, I’ve never been treated in such a humiliating way by any airline. American certainly isn’t perfect, nor is any of the US airlines (except United), but Delta is the worst! Take the time they blamed ME for missing a connection at ATL and they said was too short, when I book a 4 hour connection! The truth is, they left out of Orlando on time, only to go back to the gate for something revolving around a bag being on a plane with out the passenger. Now they go back out, and we sit, in the sun, and watch other planes take off, and they say weather, while I watch a Southwest and Frontier flight take off for Atlanta! Now, we go back, the crew have ran out of hours, and we have to wait longer, before taking off. Total delay you may be asking, 3 hours and 45 minutes! So now my 4 hour connection has been shrunk to 15 minutes, and we then have an air delay, and I’m looking at my phone while taxiing to see my flight take off. I make it in, and try to fix it and get on the next flight. Nope, even though it was completely there fault, I was blamed. Now, I had to pay out of pocket for a hotel room, food, and because the next morning was a more expensive flight, I had to pay the difference! This is one of many stories I have with DL!

I knew about the luggage thing. I work hotels and I've seen one too many late luggage come in. As for flying... big cities will overbook because let's say a plane can fit 200 people and they will book 220 because there will always be cancellations or people who show up after the flight has closed the gate. Small cities on the other hand, less likely people will miss their flight so the flights don't overbook nearly as much.

I was stuck in the Dominican Republic for over 27hrs with air Transat with barely any food compensation (and that was for only the evening and not morning or lunch). They kept delaying us and delaying us, and lying. If we knew it would be over a day wait...then it wouldn't have been so bad. Was supposed to board at 3:55, told delayed till 7:30...then 2 hrs later...told still delayed...then at 11, they tell us we aren't getting on a plane and have to go to a hotel. Then told we aren't getting a flight home till 6pm the next day...not even morning. Then we come back to the airport and no one is there to check us in. Finally, we get through and then they delay us till 7pm. We get on the plane super angry and tired...and then it doesn't take off till closer to 9. We got 250$ compensation towards another flight with them...I lost a day of work and a traditional family Christmas event. Never air Transat again.

The arguments I always hear for overbooking is that they don't want to lose money for cancellations. But like.... why not have cancellation fees, and sell back-up tickets at a lower rate, and between the two (the fees and the back-up ticket sales) you make back the lost money of the what would be an empty seat. That way no one gets bumped, because the extra tickets sold are to people that KNOW that they may not get on the flight, and everybody is happy. It's ridiculous that they do this.

Best fix is a law that allows you to take the aircraft, fly it to the destination yourself, at the airline's fuel expenses. And then they get left with the plane in whatever condition it is upon landing. After a couple of incidents they would be quick to make things run like a well oiled machine :D

i've had about 40 or so flights in the past 15 years. I have never in my life paid for extra luggage (even though I always have some). There are many tricks, but the easiest one is you simply dont show your carry-on to anyone until you are boarding the plane. If they ask you to pay at that point, tell them you have no money also, every time my flight was delayed/cancelled/etc, I have always gotten vouchers for hotel and food and bus (this wont work in 3rd world countries) If you are in a transit country airport and cant leave the airport but your flight will be delayed for over like 10 hours, demand not just food vouchers, but also $$ to buy a pillow and a blanket and some beer and books and whatever else you need to help you spend the next 10 hours sitting on a chair. The main thing is to always be respectful though. Sure, the airline staff kinda legally has to help, but this does not mean they would. I, at my job, am also supposed to do many things for the client but unless the client shows respect I will literally tell him to gtfo. Anyways, just calmly present yourself to the staff and explain your situation and what you want . Make them feel like you are both on the same side Even when they say no, and you ask for a manager, make sure you ask politely without any passive aggressiveness. If you do this any time there is a problem at the airport, you will be glad that these problems actually happen because a nice free hotel and some free food and free booze for a night isnt all that bad The last thing you want is to yell at these people or being disrespectful. It is human nature, there are hundreds of people looking. They will feel very hateful towards you for making them look bad. For many it will become an ego contest and nothing more 3 people you should always be nice to: servers, taxi drivers, and airport staff

In air asia, my flight was delayed, then my luggage sent on some other flight by "mistake". And i was on vacation so i had to spend more than an entire day without my luggage and i literally had nothing with me except a small handbag which i was carrying. I later asked them for a compensation for the troubles they caused and they clearly said they could do nothing about it. Most airlines really dont give a damn about passengers. But i have to say out of all the flights i have been on Emirates seems to be the best one.

Once, when I was coming back to NY from Rio and when the plane lands, the US customs was closed. The flight landed 15 minutes early so yeah. By the way, NEVER fly with American Airlines. First time ever and in economy, my dad needed to put his legs on my seat and he is very lean! (Btw I am 11 so I could fit him.)

The problem with the answers to these questions is that even if you are permitted to do something, the airline can use caveats to make that null and void

There should be very strong and strict enforcement which is universal against airlines even considering overbooking in any business plan on top of a very strict compensation plan that is a mandatory refund with 10% interest. Another things is to require a use now pay later system that is enforced on all airlines so airlines will be scared to intentionally delay or overbook as the passenger can just cancel the payment and provide evidence for that reason. Governments shouldn’t show any mercy to companies and make it as brutal as possible to ensure a stern warning and message. Like “ dammed if you do but not dammed if you don’t”.

People get bumped from flights cause they exceed the take off and landing weight due to adverse weather conditions that require more fuel. Your flight can be delayed because the weather isn’t good at your destination or there is bad turbulence that exceeds the planes capability. Many factors go into a delay

My experience is always select my seat even I need to pay some extra money. Also, leave at least 3 hours between each connecting flights. Get a damn insurance on that flight delay, baggage lost, and trip interruption. Lastly, book the flight the their website even need to pay more.

Pretty Much all airlines overbook. It is because some people don't show up and they don't want empty seats (it is not cost effective and it is even less environmentally friendly than normal flights). It also helps them keep ticket cost down (again empty seats are less cost effective and drive up prices). Now maybe (or more like probably) here should be laws saying they can't overbook by more than 1% to 5%.But making it illegal will just cause ticket prices to go up and some airlines to go under (leading less competition causing the ones that are left to have more power over you leading to worse treatment).

Please note that this video is so obsolete as to be misleading. As of 2020, the airline industry (especially Air Canada) has been forced to change its air passenger protection policies as a result of federal legislation. Take it from someone who knows. A Canadian travel agent.

very recently my neighbors mother in-law was flying to Edmonton from a different country they paid extra so someone would help her to find her connecting flight as she doesn't speek English. When her flight landed in Toronto the stewardess helped her out of the plain (she was also using a wheel chair) took her to an area in the airport and left her. she was about to miss her next flight but could not communicate with anyone to let them know she needed help. Finally she got someones attention & they let her use their phone. She called he daughter in Edmonton to let her know what was going on. fortunately the family new someone who lived in Toronto so they called this person & they went to the airport to help her get the next available flight,or take her home with them if she had missed it. she ended up sitting in a corner of the airport by herself in a wheel chair for almost 10 hours with no food or drink or bathroom. If this would have been my family I would have probably handle the situation a lot worse. they still have never revived an apology or anything. absolutely brutal

Me and my wife were traveling to Dhaka, Bangladesh from Winnipeg on August 31, 2018. We have bought the ticket from online travel agent Mytrip.com. We have paid Canada taxes. We waited more than 7 hours at the airport till our next flight to Shanghai On August 31, we fly to Vancouver from Winnipeg with West Jet. Our next flight was suppose to be at 2:30 am on September 1, 2018 from Vancouver to Shanghai. However, before boarding start China Eastern employee informed us that we would not be able to fly with them on the flight MU-598 We asked for the explanations but they told us that there is visa issue at Shanghai airport. Chinese government do not provide visa more than 24 hours for Bangladeshi passport holder (we are Canadian PR card holder). They did not give us any option but one of the employee informed us China Easter can help us to provide next flight. But we asked to let us fly on the same flight as we were traveling back home for my dad's heart surgery. We also asked them to let us fly on the same flight and change the next flight from Shanghai to Kunming so there is no visa issue. But unfortunately they have not listen to us and banded us to fly on the same flight. However, we were not told about this issue before we buy the ticket or before the first flight from Winnipeg So, on the China Eastern counter at Vancouver airport we were told that someone will help us in the morning after 10 am because they were unable to help at 3: 00 am in the morning for their own reason (we were unclear why they could not help?). China Eastern employees left us alone at the Vancouver airport with no hotel or food. We were exhausted , tired , worried and hungry. In the morning few China Eastern employee showed up at the counter after 10: 00 am but they make us more worried saying we can not fly with them unless we buy new air tickets from them. At some point they offer me to fly with them but the cost would be around $4000+. However, one lady from the China Eastern counter asked my credit card and told me that if we pay her $2222 then she can try to let us fly on the next flight at around 5:00 PM. We were very tired with no food, no sleep and tense for my dad. We did called travel agent they were not able to help as they said airlines is suppose to give us the next flight. At some point China Eastern employee told us that if we don't pay $2222 we would not be able to get any refund for the ticket we paid, also we would be able to fly with them with the return ticket. So, we ended up paying $2222 just to get the flight at that moment. We felt like hostage !! China Eastern employee had charged my Tangerine credit card for $2222 and let us use the same ticket we previously paid to Mytrip.com
