As a Singaporean, who has flown multiple times with AirAsia and Scoot, I did not really have an issue with them, especially after considering the premium you would have to pay for fly the same route on a full service airline. AirAsia and Scoot also operate mainly in Asia where passengers tend to be smaller in size so that might explain why they are still pretty popular with locals

If you're refusing to fly Saudia for human rights reasons, you've got to avoid Qatar, Emirates and Etihad. Saudia doesn't get covered a lot but imo has excellent service across the board.

I find really strange that you refuse to fly Saudia and Royal Brunei and still travel regularly with Qatar and Emirates... Qatar and the EUA literally have similar laws regarding women's rights, and homosexuality is punishable by life emprisonment... You say that you couldn't find information regarding emprisonment of LGBT in the UAE? Just go on Wikipedia, there are several cases each year... Plus, all their staff on ground is made of migrants forced to work in almost inhumane conditions (that are regularly qualified of modern slavery by the UN's Human Rights council). I understand that you enjoy their business class product, but what is the humane cost of your comfort? 😕

Governments everywhere don’t endorse human trafficking or any inhumane practices. It’s people. Especially people who take advantage from others of their own countries. My government actually saved many little girl from you know what, and workers guarantee their rights if they speak to the government but they’re scared of the people who hired them. It’s like mafia where they fear the safety of their families back home if they report their employers to the officials. I’m too tired to go on and justify what you could easily find and see for yourself if you put some effort.

Hey Daniel.... Thanks for this particular video. Being a certified aircraft mechanic (and pilot), I've been asked this question more than once by a travel agent I used to book through. When the agent would be traveling abroad, this question would come up. I based my comments on FAA data, as well as a few well know "industry" magazines. Your list is an update, of what I used to shy from, or not encourage travel on. Some of the middle eastern carriers you mentioned, were on my list at the time. Main reason for my refusal to fly an airline, would be based on questionable maintenance practices. I would agree with you on the LCC (or is that LLC) you mentioned in the US. Its always troublesome when upper management has little to no regard for required and necessary routine maintenance, and heavy maintenance. (Bet their cars are treated in in similar manner.) Its a matter of SAFETY! Cheers....

Two of the airlines you listed in the “safety” category have never crashed, those being Ryanair and Spirit. They’re just uncomfortable. Of the two, in your way of thinking, Spirit is probably safer due to them flying Airbus. Both are safer than United. Pretty much any airline you fly, no matter where, is going to be safer than driving, no matter what. Also, though I’d rather fly other aircraft types, I am not the kind of person to avoid the Boeing 737 MAX or -900ER on purpose. The two MAX-8 crashes were caused by bad implementation of the AOA sensors, and improper training to the pilots for a new system that used the sensors, both of which have been fixed. I’m sure Boeing’s heavily scrutinizing that plug they use for the optional exit on the -900ER and MAX-9.

I flew EgyptAir 4 times (LHR-CAI-AMM and in reverse) and it was a pleasurable experience. I met the captain on the LHR-CAI leg who spoke very fluent English and he explained some of the procedures they had in the flight deck, both pilots showed confidence in their aircraft and what they were doing. The service in economy was great, friendly flight crew, full meal for the flight, and once during a really rough patch of turbulence, the captain over the P/A apologized and explained why we experienced that really rough patch and how they were handling it in the flight deck. Overall, really enjoyed EgyptAir and I would definitely fly them again and I hope you will too in a future video! :D

Thank you again, by the way, for speaking up about Boeing's breach of trust with the 737 MAX. I can tell that you know as well as I do that the issue isn't so much the aircraft specifically; we all know there can be design flaws which cause fatalities and that those can be fixed, and that aviation is still safer than driving etc. etc. etc. The real problem, as I think you're referencing, is that the FAA let Boeing certify its own plane, Boeing tried to play it off and hide things, and seemed pretty callous about the whole thing if you ask me. And really, the safety issues with the MAX were totally avoiable. I can't understand some of the decisions with regards to how the MCAS was made to work and the lack of cross-verification for the data from the angle-of-attack sensors. Boeing has gotten too big for their britches recently, they are full of undeserved swagger when it comes to the MAX and they act like all that matters is the money. Their design decisions show poor judgment when it comes to air safety in the MAX, and their handling of the whole thing shows even worse judgment. I think everyone who made those decisions should be fired or resign, up to the very highest levels; Boeing is not the company I remember. You are right that they have betrayed a great deal of trust, and as of right now I have lost a great deal of trust in them myself.

Sadly I have had similar experiences flying with Air Canada (as a Canadian). a while ago I took the direct flight from Vancouver to Sydney Aus, and from Check-in to boarding and then service on the plane... all the staff and flight attendants acted horribly. One got cranky with me because I was already waiting first in line at check-in 3 hours before the flight. The same lady from check-in was a flight attendant for my area on the plane and she actually looked at me and groaned when she spotted me sitting there. Her and all the other staff did the absolutely bare minimum the entire 15 and a half hour flight. I don't think I got a single smile from any member of the crew at any point in the trip. My stomach was a little upset from the minor but consistent turbulence and I would ask intermittently for Gingerale... it was like they were rationing it out to me, filling the tiny plastic cup half full, and acted like I was putting them out any time I asked for a bit more. Several times they downright refused and told me to wait for the cart. The food made hospital food look like a classy dinner and the portions were tiny, even by my small appetites standards. Not to mention the seats... It was like they slid all the seats as close together as possible to fit the maximum amount of people on the long flight, and even in my tiny female stature, I had to lift my foot over my knee to even attempt to cross my legs as my knees were already pressed against the seat in front of me (and the guy wasn't even reclined). The flight attendants would even get grumpy with people who got up to stretch and walk the aisles, as recommended on long flights. At the end of the flight before disembarking in Australia they started spraying down the cabin and everyone in it with this aerosolized product and when someone near me asked what they were breathing in, the flight attendant snippily said "Australia has rules" and wouldn't say more. The plane was super dated looking and there was little things that were obviously where they cut corners and made the cabin look so cluttered, such as the little flap of fabric on the headrest part of the seat being so badly ironed that the edges were all creased at weird angles and the corners standing up like little wings and weren't even placed properly on the velcro so all the flaps were at weird angles on the seats... and the brochures and safety pamphlets were shoved haphazardly into the pockets in the back of the seats and many were very damaged or dirty. The plane did it's job and I got safely from point A to B but the entire trip was painfully uncomfortable and unpleasant. I made sure when I booked a flight to come home that I booked with a different airline even though it meant a lengthy connection.

The biggest thing I gathered from reading about the 737 Max thing, is that I don't want to go anywhere near Lion Air. They identified the faulty sensor, their maintenance didn't fix it but said that they did. Then a flight crew encountered the MCAS issue, got through it by applying the standard runaway trim procedure, but after they landed nothing was done to fix the issue. They just kept flying the plane until it found a couple guys who couldn't deal with it. That's a crazy lack of safety culture. Maintenance and pilot training have a much larger effect on air safety than aircraft type. Pilot requirements for hours and training can vary pretty widely by country. I'd prefer to fly with an airline that has stories like the Miracle on the Hudson, or Flight 232 in Sioux City. Preferably I'd stay away from ones where the pilots thought their ego was more powerful than the weather, or where crews are discouraged from squawking maintenance items.

Hey Nonstop Dan, I recently flew Frontier Airlines (around spring break in March going from Nashville, TN to Fort Myers, FL). Granted, it was a nonstop flight, which was great, but what they didn't tell me when I booked online (through kayak.com) was that you pay for a carry on (such as a backpack), you pay for your seat, and luggage both ways is extremely expensive. I mean WTF, get in the 21st century Frontier Airlines. (BTW, Spirit Airlines is the same way). I love Southwest Airlines and Delta (my two favorite airlines).

Recently I traveled Lufthansa business class. I thought it was great. The service was amazing and the seat/bed very comfortable. For food it was good on the day I was going to my holiday destination, but during my return flight, the food was a bit cold and bland, so we the food is really a hit or miss, but it was still a very enjoyable flight. I also caught some amazing views from my window! (Not my least favorite but my favorite.)

Perhaps discomfort on Scoot’s 787 is due to Dan’s larger build. Scoot and Airasia are Asian airlines so perhaps the seating’s catered more to the smaller asian build. However having said that, they are airlines that currently serve non-asian routes so they do have to take non-asian builds into consideration too.

I dont understand why you solely targeted Pegasus as the only low cost carrier in Europe while there are a dozen more. What makes them better? They offer a similar experience. Pegasus is in my opinion as good as a lowcost carrier can be. Good reputation, good safety records, good service. I fly them all the time.

I am surprised that Air Koryo isn't on ANY list. I can see why you wouldn't fly Pegasus, I fly with them all the time from Stansted and they have got better, on my most recent flight there was wifi available with an entertainment system on board with movies TV series and games, and this was on a 13 year old 737-800 aircraft. Also, now that they are introducing the A320 Neo, legroom is not as bad as before.

I understand your reasons for not wanting to fly Royal Brunei, but having flown with them a few years ago I do recommend them. I flew from Melbourne, Australia to London in their 787. Service was excellent, seats were comfortable, food was great, well, as good as airline food can be. And because the flight was MEL- BWN- DXB- LHR it was essential three 7 hourish flights which made the trip very easy. As I said though, I do understand why you won't fly with them.

LATAM still remains a little less comfy compared to QANTAS (with regards to service), but then again it’s on the MEL-SCL route; the service is “sure we are trying our best”, but they have a lot to improve. With regards to flying, I kinda feel a lot like the dog in the top hat where the house is on fire: “This is fine”. Trivia: Vueling is the only airline to do the Hannover-Barcelona route, but secretly we can imagine if Lufthansa or Iberia could do this route to ensure a week long schedule.

dvebmb I agree they are terrible. We were re -routed from Sydney to Melbourne. They put us up in a hotel but the taxi fare was $100 as they didn’t provide transport ! I flew Vueling from BCN to BHX last year, after an hour delay we took off, then a high pitch noise started coming from the back exit door which was really uncomfortable and caused a lot of heavy turbulence, after 45 mins they turned around and we landed back in BCN, no staff anywhere to tell us what is going on we just got pushed through security again and had no idea where we were going, passengers where collapsing of dehydration, after 4 hours at BCN we finally got a replacement aircraft and got back to BHX, nobody got any compensation even though we got back 7 hours late!!

I refuse to fly United. Years ago -- when I attended professional meetings twice a year -- I flew United fairly regularly. One year, however, I was scheduled to fly from Chicago to Denver, transferring to a flight that would take me to Burbank/Bob Hope Airport, which is close to home (and less crowded) than LAX. Because of weather in Denver, the flight was cancelled. However, although UA offered me a flight to LAX, I declined, because I had left my car at BUR. They then offered to take me to SFO, and transfer to a plane to BUR. Okay, I thought. As we got closer to SFO, I realized there was a very short time between the time we were to arrive and the departure time to BUR. I called the flight attendant and explained my predicament. She said she could help me get off the plane quickly. When I deplaned, I realized we were at the farthest gate from the one I was supposed to leave from. When I asked at the alleged "customer service" desk if I could get a golfcart to take me to my new gate, the staff member said, "No." I had to walk the length of the concourse, carrying a heavy carry-on and bulky coat. When I got to the end of the concourse, I discovered to my horror that the plane was United Express, which meant I had to go out the exit and go through security again. I vowed I would never fly United again, and except for one trip to visit a friend that only United served, I've kept that vow.

Oh god I remember Pegasus. A few years ago my mom and I were able to pick up a last minute canceled vacation to Side, Turkey with Thomas Cook that lasted a week. We bought the vacation less than a week before our flight with Thomas Cook from Copenhagen to Antalya was due to leave and on the morning of our flight... we overslept! We overslept, with less than 90 minutes until the plane departed from an airport that would be an entire 1 hour drive from our home! We rushed all HomeAlone style until we were about 1/4th the way there with 45 minutes until departure when we gave up and drove back! There we went looking for some form of alternative and my mom found tickets with Pegasus with a stopover in Istanbul. We thought it would cost a bit but it would be worth it, so we get to CPH, take the flight to Istanbul, which was low quality but certainly feasible. But on our connecting flight to Antalya that's where it all went wrong. We boarded the plane and we were still sitting at the stand a good 20 minutes past departure time. My mom asked when we would take off and the attendant said, in 5 minutes. Then 5 minutes later we rolled back from the stand... and waited for 1 hour in a queue of planes waiting to take off. We spent more time in that place on the ground in Istanbul than in the air! My mom was furious when we finally got in the air and the attendant said "That's the norm"... We were just so glad that the shuttle we booked to take us from Antalya to Side had been given our flight number so that they knew about this atrocity! We eventually made it to our hotel at 1am the following morning, with the budget of the trip doubled. Also I actually flew with AirCairo (EgyptAir's low cost subsidiary) recently on a charter flight from Copenhagen to Sharm el Sheik non stop... it was something. The plane on the way down there had no seat pockets and we were served just a single bland cheese sandwich. It was a 5 1/2 hour flight. The return trip was nicer though, that plane had seat pockets, slightly larger legroom by maybe 1 or 2 centimeters and we were served a proper meal (probably a standard Egypt Air economy lunch as it had Egypt air wrapping all over it.). It was alright. Nothing too fancy but it got the job done at least. And all of us passengers who were all Danish just started talking about how back in the old days with Sterling Airways how you were able to make your own smørrebrød sandwiches on the plane with the ingredients given by a fancy flight attendant.
