Maciel Hay's passion for shooting earned her the nickname “Sniper.” As an adult, she's managed to live up to that moniker by becoming the first female active-duty sniper in Army history. Hay graduated from the branch's notoriously difficult sniper school last month. When Hamna Zafar, 23, was just a teenager, her family flew to Pakistan for what she believed was a routine visit with relatives. Instead, she found herself in the middle of her own engagement party to a man - her cousin - handpicked by her immigrant parents. Rather than give up on her life in the United States, Zafar hatched a plan - to fly the coop and join the Air Force.

In 'that part of the World', marrying-off cousins to each other is fairly common. It prevents the family, as a whole, from losing whatever comprises the dowry. It also explains SO much.

shits pretty brutal honestly. i used to date a pakistani girl and she was faced with being disowned by her family, community, culture, and society if she refused to marry within her cast. her father even told her he would kill her due to bringing shame upon the family. not to mention all the pakistani girls who face abduction by their families. needless to say she made her decision.

Had a co-worker years ago, a Korean who had moved here with her family as a child. Working her way through college, gets a call from home that she needs to go home immediately. She drives for hours to get there, they lock her in a room and tell her she's being married off to the son of the farmer next door so they can combine their land or some stupid thing. She escaped out the second story window in the middle of the night. Had to switch colleges and everything to keep them from kidnapping her and taking her back. What a messed up situation.

When I was a medic and we had to deal with some injured Army guys they razzed us relentlessly for the whole bus ride to our facility. When we finally got there and told them to go inside and sit down (some of them were on crutches) while we unloaded their bags, they all stood around confused and then made sure we really didn't want them to form up so we could count heads and make sure everybody was there. We asked why we'd do that. They stopped razzing us after that, and there was a lot of "Man, I should have joined the Air Force."

Hopefully, she stays extra vigilant and keeps an eye on her six. Good on her for escaping those circumstances, but I can't help but worry for her safety, though. @@oif3vetk9 Dude, honestly, never even gave NG a thought while active. Not being mean. Just was never a thing. Can't compare those who live it 24/7 and those who put on the uniform 2 days a month, with the occasional deployment. Again, nothing against NG but, if you ain't full time with all that entails, then you are not 'besting' any one.
@oif3vetk9
@oif3vetk9 8 ай бұрын
@@samrester6254 I'll agree NG doesn't have to put up with all the stuff AD does but (And this goes both ways) unless one walks a mile in the others shoes it's a bit difficult to understand. There's a lot more that goes on with NG than people think. It's definitely more than two days a month or a two week AT. Personally, I was a fulltime federal tech for 21 of my 23 years. (Title 32 tech) You should see all the ways the NG got to screw us. lol As to the besting remark, I'm not talking about in every aspect. I'm talking about how NG has beat AD (Repeatedly) in certain competitions that it would seem AD should beat NG readily. The one area NG does seem to accelerate at though is what a NG unit can bring to the table in theater. AD is good at what they do because, as you said, they do the job every day. That's a bit of a problem though (From what I saw) because that's all they do. NG, and I'm speaking strictly from a support unit aspect, brings a lot of talent that isn't MOS specific. Example: I was in charge of 62 Bravos. (Hvy Eng Eqpt) By MOS we were supposed to work on construction equipment only but we worked on everything plus did vertical construction and all sorts of other odd jobs because my crew had such varied experience from their civilian jobs. We were the go to section of our unit when something needed to be done that wasn't within our units parameter to do. We also did a f ton of convoy SECFOR and the AD trans unit we escorted loved us. You could say we did our job well. Not bad for two day a month mechanics. ;-) I'm not saying AD soldiers don't have the experience to do something other than their MOS, maybe its that NG can get away with a bit more in theater because AD command doesn't watch them as closely? (Again, talk support units) The one thing I do feel bad for AD soldiers, get out of AD, come to NG thinking they have it made, then in short order that unit gets activated and they go downrange again. Happened to a friend of mine. He was 82nd, went to Afghan, came back, got out, enlisted in NG and within a month our unit was activated. Talk about bad timing.

I joined the army to get away from my dad. I had no idea what I was going to do with my life. I know I didn't want to go to college and I sure as f*** didn't want to stay home so I dove head first into the army and never looked back. Best choice I ever made. Same here. Grew up in a basically parentless household that ended up with me briefly being homeless at 17. Enlisted in the Army on delayed entry and flew out a week after graduation. That decision set me up for life, allowing me to buy a home at 21, start a family and get a great career as a civilian. It also allowed me to travel to broken nations, which made me love our country more and appreciate the American way of life. Now, in law enforcement, I often try to guide troubled youth to the military, especially when they tell me they have nowhere to go because of where they're from. The military isn't for everybody, but it does provide the opportunity and resources to start over fresh, even when you don't have a dollar to your name.

As a Job Corps student nearing graduation, I faced the daunting prospect of returning to an abusive family environment. Aware that going back could potentially lead me into situations of either sexual or labor exploitation, I chose to join the Army as an alternative path. While I encountered challenges during my service, it ultimately liberated me from a life of exploitation.

If she smiles it implies that she is a lady who enjoys carnal relations, implying that she's not pure. I know this because it was explained to me while looking through some wedding photos from 1980s Albania. Although I'm sure an arranged marriage with your cousin would wipe the smile off your face on its own.

That's the problem with a lot of immigration unfortantly. They want to live here but they don't want to be American, they want to still be whatever culture they escaped from, ignoring the fact that often times, their old culture is why their old countries is the way that it is. And that American culture is why America is the way that it is.

I will say cases like her's are still a rarity in the US. Most immigrants assimilate into American society because the American Dream is open to all. America is still a young nation that finds values in every corner of the world to enrich itself. Unlike in Europe where cultures inevitably clash, often times violently, due to the host country's centuries of entrenched values along with the immigrant's country's entrenched values that span centuries.

Like the guest can stay in their room and have everything they need delivered. Security of course prevent people from just walking into the hotel. They would help contacting the consulate or embassy so that you can get your replacement passports and such. Security escorts if you need to leave the hotel, etc .... So, it may be worth it to find out the nearest Marriott or Hilton. Keep your documents and wallets around you and some cash.
