Once you are liberated from a particular [faith-based religious] belief, nobody else gets to choose how you feel about that belief system you left. If you never had one, never had your family indoctrinate you into it from a small child; consider yourself very very lucky. It's all luck.

@@johns1625 🙄 Hitchens is the perfect illustration of the difference between being clever and having deep and accurate insight, including about oneself. I'm sorry that he took you for a ride. His book trying to make Hitler into a Christian and defend against the incredibly ugly record of major atheist leaders in the 20th century was amazingly bad scholarship and instead just a clever sectarian defense of his own belief system, like any other sectarian apologist might write. Same with Dawkins speaking on the National Mall in DC, urging his followers to demean and harass those who disagree with them. A Christian leader urging his followers to do the same would be crucified in the media (and be quite deserving of it).

Sasha was a deeply religious woman, a woman of strong faith. I have read her story and was moved by it. The following is a poem that Sasha wrote some months before her kidnapping and murder. The words she penned were prophetic of the evil that would cross her path and envelop her, and most likely of the strength and courage with which she met her fate. RIP, Sasha. This reminds me of one of my best friends’ murder in 2012. She had just started a position as director of childhood education at a church in DE. She was working late one evening when the janitor decided to kidnap and kill her. She did not know the janitor. But the janitor did have ties to the church. He was the son of the office manager. She had gotten him a job there but neither had disclosed that he was a registered s*x offender. When the church found out, he was let go. But they gave him two weeks notice to leave. They never let any of the staff know that a registered s*x offender was still working there. The day my friend was kidnapped was the janitor’s last day at the job. He took her over the border to MD to dispose of her body in a swamp. A hiker happened to come across her body within a few hours of her murder. If he hadn’t, her body would have eventually disappeared into the swamp and no one would ever have known what happened to her. The janitor finally confessed in order not to receive the death penalty. I believe he got 25 years. My friend was a gentle and beautiful soul who left behind a loving husband and three beautiful daughters, the youngest of whom was barely a toddler. The thought that this monster may be walking free someday makes me so mad.

I followed this case from the start when Sasha went missing. I watched the trial and was so glad when that creep was convicted, and sentenced to life in prison. Jacob Gooch a former Virginia police officer and the brother of murderer Mark Gooch, texted his siblings and, joked about pulling over a Mennonite family and coughing on them after telling them he had the COVID-19 virus, after Sasha Krause's death. The whole Gooch family is messed up, tbh.

Dr Grande, i think that's the saddest story you've covered. As you stated, no cause, no harm, nothing from Sasha to her killer. I viewed a documentary on the Mennonites only weeks ago. It stunned me. Goal/prison lockdown was more social. I dont feel surprised he did this, but at least select someone who had harmed you. 3 sons, and out in the 'naughty/forbidden' world. As a layman, i can't help but question the mental impact upon Mennonite living. 😢

One thing, there are ultraconservative mennonites, conservative mennonites, and "liberal" mennonites. "Liberal" mennonites live pretty normal lives, no different than a conservative Christian of any denomination (ie they attend public schools, watch TV and movies, nothing makes them stand out as being Mennonite etc.) The conservative mennonites will often have a TV, but only watch news or certain videos they will interact in their larger community pretty normally. Then there are the ultraconservative, living in very insular communities and very similar to the Amish. Mennonites and Amish are breakaway groups from the Swiss Brethren, so they have very similar theological beliefs.

I live 3 miles from Canada's largest conservative Mennonite community. As was commented the levels of conservatism is complex. Here our malls have hitching posts and small corrals because the community still uses the black buggies and black horses for transport. For lifetimes they have had incredible farms outside the city limits with no power. Strange to drive through at might and everything is pitch black, and suddenly a horse and biggy emerges. Now asthe younger men can't but farmland, there are commercial farms down the road where pigs are raised and harvested. In to2n are more modern Mennonite they use cars but still dress differently, not in the long dresses but a knee length black dress with knit stocking osprcsome with summer knee socks. Men in suspenders and white shirts. Then there are Mennonite assembly churches where the attendees look no different in clothing to anyone else in the community. Sadly our government is removing "greenbelt" protection around cities that allows for rural .if close to small cities etc. So developers will be hot fir that farmland to house condos etc for all the economic refugees. Very sad.

I understand harboring resentment against a religion, especially one that you were raised in and one as polarizing as Mennonite or Amish, which practices some very conservative practices and also believes in shunning anyone who leaves or doesn’t comply with their beliefs. I understand that, I do. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs. But picking up a random, innocent young woman who happens to be practicing that religion, and brutalizing her in the name of hating that religion is despicable.

I agree that this killer was thinking about murder for some time and targeted a female member of the Mennonite due to some deep seated resentment towards that religious community. He also likely perceived the Mennonite females to be easy targets. it seemed also that he must have known this would have had a strong impact in the community at large, given the peaceful nature of the Mennonites. Can't help but wonder if this was also something he sought -- something that would shock and gain attention in the media.

Narcissist; thats 100%. (mirror and camera sex scenes, morning routine). Maybe suffering delusions due to internal conflict. Probably high iq and high in macavellianism due to his job title/education. Parasitic lifestyle (only pretends to work). Sensation seeking is seen in the film too (prostitutes, coke). Glib charm: his shallow riffs about musicians and faux concerns for world peace. So as per the title Bateman is a psychopath. But we don't know in the film whether his many crimes are real or delusions. However I am not diagnosing anybody in this case, merely speculating as to what Dr Grande may say.

Hi Dr. Grande, long time fan. What's your thoughts on the Fells Acres case concerning the guilt or innocence of Gerald Amirault? It's a case concerning the day care panic of the 1980s. I watched a documentary on HBO Max about it, but came away from it not knowing what to think about Amirault's guilt in actuality; however, I definitely think there was reasonable doubt. The investigation seemed to be based solely on the testimony of young children whom were subjected to interviews that were rife with leading questions and bias. You could also use the case to explore the psychological phenomenons present in the day care panic as a whole during the 80s and 90s.

The rule is never let a criminal take you from crime scene 1 to crime scene 2, because your odds of survival drop to close to zero at crime scene 2. Sanford Strong wrote a book "Strong on Defense" and he said you should try to run away in a zig zag fashion or cause a car accident to avoid being taken to crime scene 2.

Law enforcement agencies should be given a standing ovation for catching this guy. It took them two months, but they succeeded in getting Gooch off the street. I believe that it goes without saying that he would have killed again.

The quiet resilience of Sachas community is my strongest impression from this sad case. I recommend Dave Lemons(?) channel for the trial. As for the murderer, not everyone is a fitt for a strict and insular way of life like that, thats fore sure, but thats such a gross failur to cope with life I don't know...

Women and children assault victims deserve better than what our justice system provides in terms of the punishment levied against their perpetrators. It's truly sickening to see that the convicted are treated far better than they "treated" their victims. Cruel and unusual acts upon women and children should be met with cruel and unusual punishment upon their perpetrators.
