Question: If you receive automated authorization to fly at max altitude of 100ft AGL, does that include 100ft above the ground, surface, or building below you as long as you are close to that building? Ex: Can I fly 100ft above a 4 story building? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

This answer is to a question that is quite similar to your question: 5. (Refer to Figure 20, area 1.) You’re hired to inspect a group of structures that are under construction 9 statute miles (SM) south of Norfolk Intl airport. What’s the highest you’re allowed to fly without needing to ask for additional FAA permission? A) 470 ft. MSL B) 853 ft. AGL C) 1,200 ft. While the Part 107 regulations state a maximum altitude of 400 ft. AGL, you’re allowed to fly higher than that as long as you’re within 400 ft. of a tower / obstruction. You’re even allowed to fly up to 400 ft. over the topmost part of that tower. In this case, the height of the high-intensity lighted group of structures under construction 9 statute miles (SM) south of Norfolk Intl airport is 453 ft. AGL. If you’re flying “as high as allowed under Part 107,” you’d be flying 453 ft. AGL + 400 ft., or 853 ft. AGL. I hope this helps...

This FAA Order says if flying near an airport in areas with height restrictions shown on the UAS Facility Map, if flying within 400' laterally of an obstacle, you can add 100' to the height restriction shown on the map. Staying 500' below the cloud ceiling still applies. This info is detailed on pg. 7 of this pdf: www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Order/JO_7200.23A_Unmanned_Aircraft_Systems_(UAS).pdf - (To your question here and in the video, it is not "100' over the structure," and definitely not 400' over.)

@@delongdesign From the same document, page A-3 "Part 107 allows operators to fly 400 feet AGL and if, within a 400-foot radius of a structure/obstacle, they can fly to the height of the structure plus 400 feet. However, the maps will only be evaluated to 400 feet AGL. For any request above 400 feet AGL, regardless of proximity to a structure/obstacle, headquarters will coordinate with the facility". It appears that approval to fly above structures cannot be obtained using the automated authorizations but can be authorized by contacting the facility directly. I can see where this can be confusing.
@caseyfrederick9887

I know this video is old but I'm still making sense of this question. Some documentation seems to point that you're cleared for your structure plus 100', other seems to maintain that you're cleared for a MAX of 100' as you questioned. Was there any sort of conclusion reached? Using Reunion tower as an example since I live in Dallas, if I wanted to fly OVER the tower, would a 100' AGL authorization clear me up to 661' AGL within the 400' radius of the tower? That seems to be what the 107 paperwork suggests?
@Bucketheadzie
@Bucketheadzie 3 жыл бұрын
@@caseyfrederick9887 Lou Vaillancourt is correct. I agree, it is often confusing to interpret regs. I’ll try and give the short answer and then expand a bit to try and help clarify. Remember there is a difference Part 107, recreational, and when in/out of controlled airspace when considering these rules. The max height you could be authorized for through LAANC in controlled airspace is 400’ AGL. The most restrictive segment height you apply for authorization in IS your MAX altitude. No adding an additional 100’, that should have already been considered by the facility according to their procedures. So if the segment you want to fly in max height is 200’ AGL, then with approval, you can fly up to a max of 200’ AGL. If higher than 400’ AGL or that segments max height is needed in controlled airspace, you must contact and coordinate with the facility. Outside of controlled airspace you may apply the rule to clear obstacles up to 400’ AGL under part 107. Ch 4 Part 107 1 (pg 7) is the procedure the controlling facility will use to determine max AGL for LAANC requests depending on the distance from the airport reference point (ARP). This part describes the procedure used to determine the AGL heights for each segment from 0-400’ AGL + 100’ for an obstacle. Section A-7 states that automated approval above 400’ will not be automatically authorized. Approval to go higher than 400’ AGL may be possible with coordination with the controlling facility. Hope this helps.

He doesn’t mention that if you fly DJI, you need to get the drone unlocked for that area from DJI “fly safe” before AirMap authorization...or you still can’t fly. Go to DJI.com, tap “support”, tap “fly safe”, tap “restricted zone authorization” then you have to fill in your controller number along with the start date you want to fly. Then you will get a three day authorization. Make sure you’re logged into your DJI account first or you have to do it all over again. THEN, and only then, can you follow the instructions in the video for your FAA LAANC authorization through AirMap.

Hi Jeff. They say they try to get authorization in one hour or less. But if you’re working as a Part 107, I would suggest getting your DJI authorization the night before. Also, sometimes when you’re ready to fly you may even have to go through the self unlock procedure on the DJI app before the final unlock.

Hi Jeff. Great video. Can you clarify how the authorization to fly is coming from the FAA and not just from the app? I am used to calling ATC and giving my certificate number and drone registration number to gain access. AirMap never asks for this information. Does my local ATC trust just my cell phone number for authorization?

Being a new recreational owner of a DJI Mavic Pro drone I have had a very difficult time finding information regarding notifications to Air Traffic Control regarding flights within their restricted air space. What I do find is geared way more to the commercial operator than the hobbyist. While your websites and videos talk a lot about LAANC you have very little or nothing on AirMaps D-NAS. With all the latest changes I believe an updated video is justified. I understand that Commercial pilots have a bigger stake in getting proper authorization, but the responsible recreational operators at least deserve some recognition because a non informed operator is more likely to give a bad name to all operators vs those that have obtained certificates. As being a widely view channel I would hope you would take a larger responsibility to keeping the recreational operators informed as to how properly give notifications of flight and how it will assist them in flying safely. While this may seem obvious to you that you have taken the recreational flyer into consideration, believe me, you need to do more.

Hi Jeff as far as I know as a VFR pilot trained in the IFR if there is airspace above you the map will say that it starts at surface or so many feet above maybe 1500 or so.That being said if it is at surface you would be in controlled airspace and would need to be on radar and have a transponder and be flight planned for it.So I guess it would be a no in that case.

Jeff, I noticed in your video you indicated in your Airmap Authorization that you were flying with anti-collision lights. I did not see the anti-collision lights on your DJI Mavic during your setup. What were you using for anti-collision lighting? I have to add high intensity strobes on my DJI Phantom 4 Pro to meet the requirement. I use rechargeable strobes attached to the legs of my drone (1 Red Port, 1 Green Starboard, and two white strobes). They help even during daylight conditions to maintain Visual Line of Sight as well. As far as I understand when in restricted Airspace with Part 107 you have to remain at or below the flight level authorized. When flying in unrestricted airspace with Part 107 you can exceed the building or tower within a cone of 400' vertical and horizontal of the structure. So if your flying near a 500' structure you can fly up to 900' AGL as long as your remain withing 400' of the structure. If you are flying for fun and the structure exceeds 400' you have to fly around it while of course maintaining visual line of sight. Flying for fun you can never exceed the 400' AGL unless in an emergency to avoid other aircraft (not the structure).

Yes I was looking on the AIRMAP app and yes there is different altitude's 100 feet 200 feet etc. So yes the read on the air map I believe it's completely restricted we can never fly in their. But the yellow my drawn to start up without an issue I guess?? Or I guess you could say that sometimes EDJI app tells you your in air space you shouldn't be and and you can take responsibility but I guess with air map you are legal then to fly in there so I shouldn't have an issue starting the drone I guess? Add any more detail if you can but thank you for responding.

I got authorization online at FAA's Dronezone in less than 24 hours. To also get authorization from DJI I had to go to their website and submit another application with a copy of my FAA approval. After submitting the application a message was displayed that they will respond within 5 days. The 5 day period has come and gone but DJI never responded. My question is when using the Airmap app, is there a way to fly with only manual FAA approval?

Hi Ted, I did notice the same thing when i was putting some clips of this video together. When i went back, i noticed "coming soon" instead of "now available". Getting a flight plan verification is required with the Mini IF operating in controlled airspace like this video. What you don’t have to do, yet, is register. I registered my Mini anyway. Two reasons: 1) I run with a strobe on most of the time (and sometimes leg extensions) so it’s over 250g. 2) I had to register my Mavic Air 2 anyway, so one number is good for all your UAV’s IF you’re recreational flying. Part 107 needs a separate number for each. Enjoy!

Mack, that is a good question. I would probably chaulk it up to 'app development' issue. Some things are definitely not rolled out in all areas. Oddly, i went back in to airmap the day after my flight, and the automated authorization was not an option. Not sure if there was an ATC issue that day or just an Airmap App issue. it's a good start, but still needs improvement.

For DJI Drones and others do you have to do something to the drone to use this?? Another words if I was close to an airport now and my drone wouldn't start because of airspace, once I apply for the LAANC for that area how does my drone know when to start because if you're in a bad area the drone won't even turn start up?? I guess I'm not sure how that system talks to the drone so the drone will actually work? Thank you please help

Interesting question. You should not have to do anything additional. However, if you are extremely close to an airport, they likely control the airspace down to 0ft, so automated authorization is not an option. Automated authorization would be used if the airport/faa controlled the airspace down to something like 100ft. They will likely grant you access if you hold a part107 certification. Hope this helps.

@@JeffGreeneChannel and @Heli4213 Look up "DJI Geo Unlock." It's a separate step that may be necessary. You just have to click some boxes to say you have authorization and you take full responsibility. It can be done through the GO app right then, or ahead of time through a website they have for it (but you'd only do the website if you expected not to have cell phone internet access where you were going).

I have this problem. Once you receive authorization from the FAA you need to jump through a bunch of hoops to get DJI to temporarily remove the NFZ restriction. Good luck. If you want to give it a try go to www.dji.com/flysafe/geo-system/individual-unlock . You will need to upload your authorization document and submit your request. DJI says you should get a response within 5 days. Yes, you read that right. 5 days! Had I known of this I would not have spent my money on a DJI product. Probably would have got the Autel Evo which seems comparable and does not disable your drone.

Hi wesidefoos, Airmap and the DJI app are not integrated in any way. You have a great question; How do you let the DJI app know that you have authorization via Airmap for a specific flight in the area. I have not experienced this yet, but i will find a location where this applies and find out.

New to this as a hobbyist, and I have a question, if the drone is under 250 grams and used for recreational purposes only, won't be flying over 200 feet, do I still have to request Authorization?

Remember, as a hobbiest, you are required to get an FAA license for yourself and that number goes on any aircraft over 250 grams. When flying under FAA 107 like myself for profit, we are required to register each drone over 250 grams. I'm not sure how the FAA can track a hobbiest flying a small drone under 250 grams with no registration required. You are really off the radar in that situation.

Yes!!! That is so awesome. I saw your Inspire 2 briefly, and even got just a small video clip of the Inspire 2 by the train. I was thinking what are the chances of 2 drones being down here in the same area at the same time. Happy Flying!

@@JeffGreeneChannel Airmap should implement a notification of other UAS in the area of your approved flight. That is of course, the Inspire 2 had Airmap authorization too.

This video is NOT for hobbiest. It's for 107! You should clarify that in your title.

This makes it look like the authorization comes in very quickly. This has NOT been my experience. Suggest the "submit" be multiple days prior to actual flight. Just saying.

Ed, I thought authorizations come back quickly if you submitted for flying under the max height shown in the FAA's UAS facility maps, is that not correct?

@@b2bmail As recent as 6 months ago, when I tried to obtain the LAANC authorization inside controlled airspace but at or below the restricted AGL elevation, AirMap said I needed to request authorization at least 24 hours in advance. This was after LAANC was rolled out in NE USA.

Jeff here is a discussion that I think may help you. mavicpilots.com/threads/question-about-the-400-ft-rule.53222/page-6#post-613629 To boil it down and my understanding of 107 rules. I think that if you stayed within 400 feet, (possibly 100 feet for you since that is the altitude that you were cleared to fly,) then you could fly up to the tower and while staying within 400’/100', of the tower then you could fly over the tower. But never more than 400’/100, away from the tower. That is my interpretation, this is not legal advise and I am not a lawyer. P.s. Thanks for the Vid, very helpful!
