I got a spark two weeks ago ... only three real flights so far. This is one of a very few videos about this topic, but, it seems LAANC is crucial to flying nowadays. Kudus to you. The map layers in AirMap include more information than the DJI app, showing AMA airfields, prisons, national parks, airfields, etc.. AirMap is a great flight planning tool. Thank you.

How did you get approved as a hobbyist... I made a flight plan with airmap and hit submit and I didn't receive anything good or bad...
@rich500
@rich500 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure how this works. I used it to get approved to fly 3.75 miles from a parachute plane airport that a farmer has and uses once or twice a month. Airmap said I was violating the rule about flying at an airport. By the way I'm a hobbyist.I think the faa should be making sure this airport thing is a real airport. I think no farmer should be able to ground drones because he has a swelled head about a powered parachute.
@Dr_VonDuck
@Dr_VonDuck 4 жыл бұрын
@@RS-fg5mf at the time it just approved me. It was instant. Dont know what is different for you except that now they put in stronger altitude restrictions. Still you should have gotten something so long as you had some kind of data connection on your device.
@Dr_VonDuck
@Dr_VonDuck 4 жыл бұрын
@@rich500 I cant speak to how or why a farm is an airport. All I know is at the time I posted this the altitude restrictions were super light. Now it's all zero feet altitude by me... I'm sure its partially due to big heads of people with too much money and not enough mindyourownbusiness because the manned aircraft where I want to fly are nowhere near as low as 400 feet yet I'm fully grounded now. Just by some rich people homes.

Actually, thanks to the last update and new rules I do have to use LAANC here and it's butter smooth. I'll usually give myself about 2 hours and a max of 250 feet. I don't need to fly that high but our Church, yeah i'm the drone guy likes some higher shots. This was great and it works just like you showed. I love it when a plan comes together, know who said that? I still do! Hard to believe this is from the FAA, it works so well. Maybe there is hope for us Drone Pilots. Great Video.

I remember the first time I called in to my local municipal airport (small town America) and they told me that from what they knew, I flat out could not fly a drone within 5 miles of the airport. It should be noted that they weren't denying me access because they didn't want to, they just for some reason, didn't know much about the drone laws at the time. I was handed over to another ATC, and they cleared things up, asked for some general contact info for future flights (again, small town America, they were really cool) and let me go and do my thing. I'm really happy that I was able to help introduce a senario for someone to learn how to handle those types of situations so if another drone pilot (or myself!) calls in, they know how to handle it. :)

Ray we do have it in the UK I have flown over 400ft many a times and all with the CAA approval, If a member of the public wants to fly over 400ft they have to go through a lot of red tape to get permission. The chances are anyone who is just a hobby flyer will not get permission to fly over 400ft and only PFCO holders will be able to fly over 400 ft, I live in a high risk area as im within 15mile of three airports so my home is in direct flight path of planes coming in and going out and as todate I have never had any problems apart from the local police one time wanting to know why I was flying so high. As soon as they saw all my paperwork and insurance details they washappy to know I have done everything right
@miyahollands6136
@miyahollands6136 5 жыл бұрын
@@paulvincent9744 thanks for letting me know, thought this was just an FAA app! The UK is massively behind the curve, as far as drone regulation and codes of conduct - we need to get our butt in gear and catch-up with the rest of the world. We are at a very important time for drones in the UK, it could go down the "sensible" rules direction, or on the other hand there's Canada! Apps like this will help and knowing it works with the CAA is a big help in the sensible direction!

If you are requesting higher than the grid altitude in LAANC you have to put the request ahead of time. Your message "Rejected upon submission. Flight start is too close for manual authorization" Will be replaced with "Manual authorization on submission". You won't get instant approval but it will get forwarded to the tower and they will decide based on traffic pattern etc. It looks like you have to submit it 2 days ahead of time for manual authorization.

Interestingly I encountered that very warning in Van Buren MO along the Current River on my Mavic 2 Pro. Unfortunately, the warning would not go away even after accepting responsibility. Got annoyed with the ridiculous DJI unlock process that was hit or miss while working in and around Midway Airport. LAANC should be the beginning and end of authorization to fly as a Part 107. As a Private pilot flying into and out of Midway airport every month or so, I have no need to send a request to China or Germany or any other dang place to have them unlock my Piper Cherokee so I can take off. If the FAA says Part 107 operators are OK to fly, DJI SHOULD PERMANENTLY UNLOCK our drones for good. Until then I keep my P4P's in their crates and break out the Autel EVO when operating at Midway airport with LAANC. 'nough said!

Learned a lot from this video. Thought it was interesting that the people on the bridge waved. That is a testament to people learning that drones aren't necessarily some "evil spy force" and they took it in stride. That bodes well for the future of drones. That said, I know I'm gonna get pushback, but I am aware drones can and are abused in regard to privacy issues. But, when used properly, the public doesn't need to fear them.

Question: Do they wait till day of flight or maybe I should lower from 400ft to 350 or so? It's a small airport and I'm shooting real estate so I don't think it should be an issue. The app does have the flight plan listed just not sure what happens now and trying to plan the shoot and let client know we are a go. Any in-site on planning flights a day or more out would be get! Thanks so much Ken

Thanks Ken! Did my first real estate job with LAANC last week. Easy peasy! I have been told there are instances where you have to get DJI to unblock the geo fence as well. Have you had to do that? Also, I understand the FAA and Kittyhawk are now in kahoots and it's the preferred app for this. Any insight on that?

Congrats! Yes, sometimes DJI geofencing doesn't jibe with FAA stuff. You should be able to opt out of the app restrictions and fly if you have LAANC approval. 👍

Great. So I have to go through that every time I want to fly my whoop in my back yard. Sounds perfectly reasonable.....

Your whoop isn't heavy enough to be registered.

@@KenHeron right but does not needing to register it exempt it from the rest of the rules? I haven't seen anything stating that.

Anything like this in UK ? I usually register flights with NATS app.

I've used LAANC for a while here in Southern California. There have been times when I've had LAANC authorization, but the DJI app won't let me fly. I've had to also unlock a geozone through the DJI website. And DJI won't let you unlock a geozone from a phone, only a computer or iPad type device.

Is that authorization number something that you put into your DJI GO app? Or is it just the honor system and you have authorization to fly?

Thanks for the info Ken. Does this sync with the DJI app somehow? I went for a bike ride the other day hope to get some cool shots and my Mavic said “iN NFZ” (obviously no fly zone). Will this override this? The airport isn’t even close to where I was which i thought was odd in the first place.

Not sure it syncs, but you might be able to enter your authorization code if it asks.

One thing you forgot to mention, LAANC currently only available to use for part 107 operators, but not a hobbyist, like me. They keep promising we, the hobbyist, will have this option soon... but hey, at least the updated rules no longer say "5 milea from airports", it says "controlled airspace". Means no more worrying about flying too close to those dirt stripes that rarely see a lone Cessna using them, cause hey, class G, so as long as i keep my distance from anything that actually does land there, i am perfectly legal.

The FAA announced that LAANC will be available for hobbyists effective July 23, 2019.
