KSO, you are obviously too young to get some of these references here is an explanation of a few of them; 1. The mechanic that lifted the bonnet up was looking at the dipstick to see if the plane was low on oil. The other guy was not lamenting his pilots license, he was taking his credit card. Back when credit cards didn't have magnetic stripes or chips, they had the card numbers raised on the card. So what you saw was them charging him as if he was at a gas station with a car. 2. The speech the doctor gave to Ted was from another movie called Knute Rockne All American. In the film, Knute Rockne, the coach of the Notre Dame football team inspired his team with a speech about star player George Gipp. He told his players that on Gipps death bed, "for the team to win one for the Gipper". At the time the movie came out Ronald Reagan was running for President. Reagan was an actor before politics and happened to play the part of George Gipp and used that Gipper line while campaigning so everyone in the USA got the joke. 3. Kareem Abdul Jabbar was a great basketball player at the time and was voted into the NBA hall of fame. 4. The people at the airport asking for donations was a real thing. Back in the 1970's, LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) was littered with various groups asking for money. People hated being approached by people numerous times and when that one pilot started beating the snot of those people, the audience in the theater both laughed and cheered. Also the two passengers on the plane that had shaven heads and wore robes were Hari Krishna members, a religious group from the 60's & 70's that were one of the most prominent groups at LAX. When they were asked at the airport for a donation and replied, "We gave at the office", the irony was hysterical.

Fun fact @ 19:20 The taxi meter is just turning over to read: $113.30 Before relocating to Los Angeles, The Kentucky Fried Theater was located at 11330 Regent St in Madison, Wi (TKFT was founded by the writers/directors of this film. Both Johnny & the guy that pours gas on himself were previously members of Kentucky Fried Theater. Re: #4 The 'not really even a joke' at the time about LAX was: 'You have to know hand to hand combat to make it through all the donation seeking religious nuts at the airport." Yes, Airport security was much much different then. Rex Kramer effectively demonstrates the truth of this on his way through the airport. The guy in the blue shirt that stops short is director/writer Jim Abrahams. The aircraft marshal (guy waving the plane into the terminal) and the guy that says "Hey, Larry! Where's the forklift" are the Zucker brothers, 2/3 of the writers/directors of this film. One of them was also the surfing nun on the cover of 'nuns life' magazine (no photoshop back in the day lol) Their actual mom is the woman having difficulty applying her makeup and the ticket agents (l to r) are their cousin & sister. Jim Abrahams, The other third of the director/writer trio has the distinction of being the guy on the bike hit by Kramer on the way to the airport and he is also responsible for all the vomiting noises in the film. Btw the mustang driven to the airport by Kramer was owned by the actor playing Stryker. Also when you rewatch this. DO watch all it ALL the way through the credits. You are missing some more jokes. I repeat -> All The Way Through.🙂 (Edited for forgotten fun fact)

For pure silliness, this set the standard. The only joke that may be lost by people viewing this now is the casting: Leslie Nielsen (the doctor), Peter Graves (Captain Over), Lloyd Bridges (the airport manager), and Robert Stack (Captain Kramer) were all familiar performers who had been playing just these types of roles in serious TV dramas for the past 20+ years. Having them give the same solemn performances here just makes the silliness that much sillier.

The wife who spoke for her husband regarding the coffee is the same actress who starred in Yuban coffee commercials in the 70s that had the same heard thought about her husband never having a second cup of coffee. Also in the seventies, passengers were harassed by "cause" groups like the religious and others seen in the movie. Sometimes it was like running a gauntlet. And hardly anyone today recognizes Good Times' Jimmy Walker as the guy falling off the hood of the plane. Also mistaken was the way old credit card machines worked as in this reaction, she thought the pilot was getting his card laminated....which ironically is also funny. Another element most people didn't realize -- and I didn't when I saw this movie when it opened in 1980 -- is that it is a close parody of an earlier serious movie, Zero Hour. They even used dialogue verbatim for Airplane. The sick girl was Linda Blair's character in one of the Airport movie sequels as was the nun being a take off of Helen Reddy's nun character from an Airport movie (I think there were four of them). And an addition to Daniel's opening comment, I believe Peter Graves (the pilot) didn't get the humor of the screenplay but it was his wife that suggested he accept the role regardless.

The guy wasn't laminating his ID. He was taking a credit card impression. That's how credit cards worked before they had chips and magnetic stripes. And before that, the guy was checking the oil (as if there was a car engine under the hood). That used to be a regular thing in the old days of full-service gas stations. After the credits there's an Easter Egg scene with the guy still waiting in the taxi. He says, "Well, I'll give him another twenty minutes, but that's it!" He was played by Howard Jarvis, a California politician who was behind Proposition 13, a major tax reform amendment that passed in 1978.

This really shows how society has changed today: When 1980 audiences heard the pilot's "Grown man naked" question, we howled in laughter. I saw the movie three times in the theatre with different friends with me and it's such an out-of-left-field moment, we laughed. Watching today's youtube reactions, that line is treated with shock and confusion. Times change.

Big Huge, i was watching a reaction to Elvis’ Hard Headed Woman and the reactor was shocked by the lyrics and wondered what people thought of it back then. I told him people loved it and nobody was offended by it (I was only assuming this because I wasn’t born yet when the song out). As a woman, I found nothing offensive. It was a fun dance song and not Elvis’ personal opinion about women. Too often people over analyze songs and think every song is the singer’s personal story when most singers do not write their own songs. I see more over analyzing with music than with movies i was one guy totally not understand almost anything in Airplane. He didn’t understand that it is nonstop puns and sarcasm. He was too busy analyzing instead of enjoying. The comments to his reaction were brutal.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. This film is nothing but one sight gag and one-liner after another. You have to watch carefully otherwise you'll miss something. You might even have to watch it a second time or third to get all the gags and one-liners. Try "POLICE SQUAD (In Color)" which also stars Leslie Nielsen. It was a replacement program in the summer of 1982. They only made six episodes and was cancelled because the networks claimed there were too many jokes. And the program did not have a laugh track, which about 99.5% of the sit-coms did at the time. The fact that Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack and Peter Graves played their characters straight-faced made the film even funnier. This film never disappoints nio matter how many times I watch it. Stay safe and well.

@jwsel

There were a whole series of Airport movies (Airport, Airport 1975, Airport ‘77, and Concorde - Airport ‘79, considered one of the worst films ever made.) They were part of the great 1970s disaster movies, which also included Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno, and Earthquake (and numerous other films). They were films with large casts of a few a-list actors and a lot of lesser-known, but recognizable actors. By the time Airplane came along, the genre had largely run its course. But Airplane pretty much ended them for more than a decade. Nobody could take them seriously. In the mid-1990s, Twister revived the genre and was followed by Independence Day, Volcano, Dante’s Peak, Armageddon, and Deep Impact. Airplane’s impact on disaster films was similar to the impact Blazing Saddles had on westerns.
@markinman8156

Somewhat correct, it did parody the Airport movies, but actually was a remake of a 1957 movie called "Zero Hour". They actual bought the rights and basically used the same script and ideas from that film. The little boy looking at the girl was actually a scene from that movie, lol. They also brilliantly used well known 50'sand 60's TV and movie B actors who were mostly known for serious roles, used them instead of comedians and actually gave them new careers.

29:36 - The guy who's death haunted Striker was George Zip, again a spoof of the famous Notre Dame football player, George Gipp. Gipp(who's nickname was the "Gipper") was the Captain of the Notre Dame football team, coached by Knute Rockne. But Gipp tragically died of an illness while he was in College. The team has a game scheduled while Gipp was on his deathbed, and coach Rockne gave a famous pregame speech telling the team to "Win one for the Gipper", only in Airplane it was "Win one for the Zipper"

"I just want to tell you both, good luck. We're all counting on you." 😄 That actor's name is Leslie Nielsen. Unfortunately, he's passed away now, but I don't think too many people will disagree if I say that, in his day, he was an _icon_ of deadpan, satirical humor. Any time you want a laugh, I think you'd be pretty well advised to look up a movie from his filmography.

If you watch this again you'll find even more jokes in the background and soundtrack. DId you notice that throughout the film you heard the sound of propellers even though it's a jet airliner? And the mechanic was checking the oil under the hood (even though there's no engine there). The guy wasn't laminating the captain's i.d., he was doing a swipe of his credit card, that how we used to pay for things, we'd get a carbon copy as a receipt. And the Mayo clinic's shelves were lined with jars of mayonnaise. The nun is probably a reference to the singing nun who had a hit song 'Dominique'. Did you see the post credits scene with the man in the taxi? The basic plot was taken from the 1957 drama film "Zero Hour!" (complete with exclamation mark) although it took place in Canada. The even kept the name of Ted Striker and there were flashback scenes and a doctor, panicked woman, etc. It's funny watching it without the punchlines since they kept a lot of the same dialogue. It starred Dana Andrews, Linda Darnell and Sterling Hayden.

This movie is non stop puns and sarcasm. Since the movie was made over 40 years ago, a lot younger people won’t get some of the jokes because they are in reference to things of that time period. For instance, the woman who was thinking “Jim never has a second cup at home”. That was from a coffee commercial and the actress in Airplane is the same actress from the commercial. There are also a lot dramatic actors who normally didn’t do comedy but they were hilarious in this movie. By the way, Airplane is a parody of a 1950s movie called Zero Hour. It is also a parody of the 1970s era airplane disaster movies. In the 70s and early 80s there were a lot of disaster movies and they featured big stars of the past and present. Airplane also famous people of the day.
