I'm glad to you watched this! This set the standard for SO many "parody" movies, like "Scary Movie." I hope you love it! The first thing to be aware of is that with only 2 exceptions, all of the actors were "serious" actors, most having never been in comedies before! Sometimes the humor won't quite come across, for instance, you might not know that the man waiting in the cab was Howard Jarvis, who was behind the property tax "rebellion" in California, so it was funny that the cab fare kept going up while he just waited there. And then there was the lady "interpreter." She played a part in the family comedy from the 60s and 70, "Leave it to Beaver," where she played the mother. If you grew up with the TV show, it was hilarious, but I'm guessing for someone who was not familiar with the TV show, maybe not so great... And of course, "Roger," the black co-pilot, was played by basketball all-star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
@SebastianWeinberg3 жыл бұрын
There are several more in-jokes like that. For example, the PA announcers who get into an argument about what the red and white zones are for are the same people who voiced the real-life announcements for the LA airport (A married couple in real life). The female passenger wondering to herself why her husband never takes a second cup of coffee at home is a parody of a prominent coffee commercial of that era, aimed at stoking insecurity in housewives: "If your man doesn't guzzle liters of coffee, then you're a _bad wife_ because you're using the _wrong coffee!"_ It's the same actress from the commercial, parodying her own role.

I'd put "Scary Movie" in a different category, just because it parodies specific films, and often just the most well-known scenes in those films, while "Airplane!" parodies a genre, and also stands as a comedy even without that. Nothing against "Scary Movie; I liked it! It's just a different, though very similar, type of movie. I'm not sure there's really anything else out there like ZAZ, to be honest. Also, back when the movie was made Magic Johnson hadn’t been drafted yet and the Lakers weren’t the powerhouse they’d soon become. Kareem was getting a lot of negative press for dogging it by not always seeming to play his hardest every game. So when the kid keeps saying to him that it’s really Kareem and not “Roger” and then says that his dad says that Kareem is lazy or something like that, it so funny to see Kareem react the way he does which is completely out of character for him.

There are a lot of jokes that younger generations (or non-Americans) may miss, not because they didn't age well but because some people aren't familiar with the celebrities of the time. The co-pilot was Kareem Abdul-Jabar, center for the LA Lakers and the player with the most points scored in NBA history. Jive is American slang but the culmination of that whole joke is the older lady who 'translates' was Barbara Billingsley, who played the mom in the show Leave it to Beaver in the late 1950's. The person cleaning the windows and checking the oil while the pilots are talking before takeoff, was Jimmy Walker, who was in some of the biggest shows of the 70s. And many of these actors are spoofing other roles they had in dramatic airplane related shows or movies. It seems like you really enjoyed this, so do yourself a favor and watch Police Squad. Same directors, starring Leslie Nielsen. Full shows (only 6 episodes) are available on KZbin.

It was so cute when you were putting the blanket on and then the blanket over your head! ...lol. A Couple of jokes you may have missed. 1) Co-pilot Roger Murtagh is actially Karim Abdul Jabar. He was a very famous basketball player in the National Basketball League for the Los Angeles Lakers. Also, the cheering in the backround when the doctor convines Ted Striker to land the plane, George Zip is a movie reference to the Gipper, who was a football player that was sick and died. The reference is that a football player dedicated a game to the Gipper. So, Ted Striker lands the plane once George Zip indicated to the doctor that Striker did the right thing in the war mission. 3) The vulture in the film is reference to death when Rex Krammer tells Striker over the radio that all will be ok. As for your next film, both Blazing Saddles & The Princess Bride are great choices. Blazing Saddles is a slapstick Western & The Princess Bride a Fantasy/Romantic Comedy Feel better and looking forward to your next movie reaction.

You'll see this film countless times and still catch new jokes. I don't know which copy of DVD you got, but the chat between the two jive guys is subtitled in a jokey way. Also, the co-pilot was really Kareem Abdhul Jabar, who is an all-time basketball legend. The doctor is Leslie Nielsen, who stars in the Naked Gun films as well as the much better TV series, "Police Squad" that Naked Gun is based on. I think I only watch about 4 reaction channels because most don't capture the reason for people watching them. Yours is right up there because you show genuine reactions rather than forced ones. Please don't lose your personality, it makes old films I've seen so many times seem fresh again.

The couple arguing over the PA system at the beginning were actually married and the actual people who did the announcement recordings for LAX; their voices were quite recognizable to anyone flying through LAX back in the 70s. The guy in the Taxi was also really well known. He had gone on a crusade to remove the tax base for CA schools (unfortunately successfully) and was known as a massive penny-pincher. It's really weird you didn't get subtitles for the Jive scenes... I've never seen that before. You shouldn't need to turn subtitles on to get them as they're required in order to get the jokes, but maybe this edition didn't get the memo? KZbin should have those clips if you're interested. Also, the passenger who translates for the stewardess was the actress who played the mom in Leave it to Beaver - this was a well known, 1950s, all-American-Family (ie white & anodyne) show. It was quite a shock for audiences when she started speaking Jive.
@newsguy5241 Жыл бұрын
The woman who "spoke Jive was the mother on a popular TV show called "Leave It To Beaver." The joke is that she played this white bread wholesome mom on TV. Her name is Barbara Billingsley.

Love your reaction videos!! You have real reactions as opposed to the ones that are forced or fake, so keep being you!! I watched this as a kid and found new things every time. The biggest one was when I finally noticed that every time the airplane is shown from the outside, it sounds like a propeller driven aircraft insead of a jet lol. Oh and some of the jokes are time related, like the co-pilot was one of the best NBA players of the 70s & 80s and the kid called him on it lol. Feel better!!

One of the things I like is when the guy picks up Captain Kramer, he comes down stairs and you see his reflection. It cuts to the dog, then when it cuts back to Kramers reflection, he seemingly walks out of the mirror and past his wife.

Funnily enough, I actually liked having no subtitles for that bit! For me it added to the joke and made it funnier when the lady eventually came in to translate. I think that was they way I first saw it though, which almost always determines which version you prefer.
@waterbeauty853 жыл бұрын
@@Daveyboy100880 The primary joke is being unable to understand what the guys are saying, so I get how someone would be okay with leaving out the subtitles. However, the secondary joke is the exaggerated "whiteness" in the wording and diction of the subtitles which is the funniest part of the scene for me.

Congratulations, you are the first movie reactor I've seen who watched this to the very end to see the guy still in the taxi. Now a little trivia about the guy in the taxi that I don't expect a lot of people know. His was a "penny pincher" here in California named Howard Garvis, he was a hero in the late '70s for writing and campaigning for a proposition that, when it passed, lowered property taxes in this state. To me, to have this well-known money-miser (at the time this was made and released) play a character that was willing to wait in a taxi with the meter running while the cab driver was gone was actually the funniest gag of the entire movie.
