The jive black dudes were parodies of characters in Blaxploitation films of the 70s. In fact, the actors came up with their own dialogue, because they felt that the words written by the Zucker brothers didn't go far enough in their absurdity. And the old woman who speaks jive to them later in the film was Barbara Billingsley, who played June Cleaver in the sit-com "Leave It To Beaver". June Cleaver was the ultimate nuclear family stay at home housewife, and was remembered as such by the audiences of this film in 1980. Thus, when she busted out in jive talk, the audiences would go berserk with laughter, watching the premiere submissive white housewife go head to head with the two black brothas.

It's interesting to me how every single reactor I've seen watching this movie is shocked that smoking was once allowed on a plane. Smoking used to be allowed everywhere!! There was no such thing as "no smoking" in public spaces. Then they started segregating the smokers, hence you got asked "smoking or non-smoking" almost anywhere you went. It was absolutely the norm back then.

This movie works SO well because ALL the actors/characters "pretended" they were in a "serious" movie (deadpan delivery) and they acted as if ALL the bizarre stuff going on was "perfectly normal". In fact, most of the actors were well established "Dramatic" actors, but for people like Leslie Neilson, THIS launched his career into a new (funnier) trajectory! Also, within the last year or two, I read a comment (forget from whom) on another Airplane reaction video, and they pointed out something that I had missed for the last FORTY YEARS! A "joke" almost everyone misses (me too) is that the background engine sounds throughout the movie flight? Is for a PROPELLER aircraft instead of for an airline jet engine sound! After 40 years, you can STILL discover new things rewatching this film. Oh, and there is also a brief follow up joke post credits. (it's no biggie, just FYI)

@jenfries6417
@jenfries6417 2 жыл бұрын
There actually was an after-credits scene with the taxi passenger declaring he'd wait just a little longer. Practically every line in this movie was a reference to some other movie, tv show, advertisement, or pop culture trope of the time. Even the most random lines referred to something, even really obscure things. For instance, in the control tower, when one character says the fog is getting thicker and Johnny the obnoxious secretary jumps in and says, "And Leon's getting larger!" and jumps out again, I read somewhere that was a reference to a local tv ad for a furniture store in the hometown of one of the filmmakers. Apparently, they were always expanding their stores. That was their slogan. A little inside joke for the gang back home.

- It's been so long since I have seen this, but the one scene I remembered from this when the airplane crashes through the bay windows is actually (If I remember correctly), a reference to one of the movies from the Jaws Franchise, where the shark crashes through an underwater viewing window or something, and the scene is nearly identical except the shark is an airplane etc. I am thinking though that MrL Boyd didn't know this reference.

Yes, smoking on planes was a thing at one time. The smoking sections were in the back rows of the plane. No worries tho. There was a little placard that showed where the smoking and non-smoking seats were separated. Smoke knew not to go past that area. There was also smoking allowed in hospitals, grocery stores etc.

It wasn't that smoking was allowed in certain areas. It was that smoking was beginning to be prohibited in certain areas. The initial anti-smoking crusade of the 1970s was sold on the notion that non-smokers (mostly those with chronic respiratory problems) just wanted small non-smoking areas in certain businesses like airlines, restaurants, etc set aside so that people with an actual medical problem wouldn't have to endure others literally blowing smoke in their faces. And of course once the anti-smoking moral crusaders got their "reasonable concession" they immediately demanded more concessions. Then more. And more again. Until by the late 1990s restrictions on when/when people could smoke (and the hysteria over second-hand smoke) hit absurd levels of some cities banning all smoking everywhere except - maybe - in your own home or car. For your own good, of course.

You don't remember the magical smoking section on airplanes in the 80s? The two jive guys write their own lines - jive cropped up now and then but it was kinda like Valspeak - it hit mainstream and died instantly, but you rarely heard anybody hse it outside movies from a very narrow span of time. They had to coach Barbara Billingsley in her lines, delivery and body language. The three had so much fun crafting that scene they stayed friends long after they wrapped up their parts.

there are so many subtle 'jokes' in this movie; jet powered airplane that sounds like a propeller driven one, Striker in the Air Force - but wearing a navy uniform, skits mimicking TV commercials of the film's era, and so much more. Some of the humor is missed by most unless you're old enough to know the reference. For that reason, this movie (albeit still humorous) will lose its edge more and more as it gets older. Still, a lot of the content is eternal. A pie in the face is still a pie in the face.

Almost no reactors ever notice the prop plane sound. Also, seems like nobody gets the joke when Elaine says -- "It takes many things to make love last. But most of all, it takes respect. And I can't live with a man I don't respect" that was a turn on the trope that she should be leaving because she's not *getting* respect, not because she doesn't *have* respect. Nobody seems to comment on why he's suddenly sitting next to a WWII Japanese soldier. Finally, I almost never see any reactors comment on the fact that all of Ted's war memories are ludicrous because it's 1979/1980 and he's got memories of World War 2 dogfights and, later early flying mishaps from the 1900s-1920s

Especially to get that guy in the cab was Howard Jarvis a big time politician of the 70's that got Proposition 13 passed in California. I am still wigged out over both sexual innuendos by the kids and at the kids in the movie just as much as I was in 80 when I saw it in the movie theater

This was Leslie Neilson's first comedic role. The role before this was the "Poseidon Adventure" was his last serious role. He was a serious actor for a while, even was the romantic lead in "Tammy and the Pilot" I believe. For future, I hope you react to "Clue" and to "Robin Hood Men In Tights". It fits in line with some of the other movies you've seemed to like.

There is only one thing funnier than this movie, and that is watching a KZbin video of someone watching this movie for the first time. I watched the movie this morning, and have spent the entire rest of the day watching KZbin videos of people watching this movie for the first time. I have cracked up every single time, and now I'm very tired, so I'm off to bed.

Your attention to detail is so high, I'm surprised you didn't catch that every time they showed the exterior of the plane, it was a jet plane, but in all the plane scenes you hear a propeller plane. Over all, great reaction. Enjoyed watching it very much.

The back story of this film is that the movie AIRPORT came out in the early 70's and started a trend of "disaster" movies that all did well... and then a series of really crappy disaster movies followed that were thrown together just to try to make money. So, by the early 80's the whole genre was just begging to be spoofed. Enter a screenwriter who had made a dramatic airplane disaster movie back in the 1950's who was willing to spoof his own film. So, almost scene-for-scene, they took every line and turned it on its ear with a massive dose of dad-jokes. And the result was pure comedy gold!!

A gentle correction on one of the facts presented above: - The film ZERO HOUR! (1957) on which AIRPLANE! is based, was written by Hal Bartlett, Arthur Hailey, and John Champion. AIRPLANE! (1980) was written by the Zucker brothers and Jim Abrahms (based on the earlier film written by the three previous writers). Main point: It wasn't the three people (or any subset of them) from the 1950s who were willing "to spoof his own film." My understanding is that the AIRPLANE! creators bought the rights to the original film, so that they could do what they wanted with it. The thrust of your other point is entirely correct: AIRPLANE! killed the whole 'straight drama disaster film' trend that had been gathering momentum and which was by that point, overdone. The film is directly spoofing ZERO HOUR!, and indirectly spoofing the various AIRPORT films of the 1970s, and (even more indirectly) spoofing the entire genre of non-airport disaster flicks (Earthquake, The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure...)

It wasn't green screen but old school projection on a background. The actors were in a mock-up of the car and various backgrounds were projected on a movie screen behind it. The "car" would be on a platform that could be manipulated to give it motion that would look like hitting a bump etc.

The dance scene is a reference to John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever" The beach scene is a reference to a famous scene in "From Here To Eternity". The plane crashing through the window, as well as the hysterical woman being slapped and the arguing PA announcers are references to a series of movies "Airport", "Airport '75", "Airport '77", and "Airport '79".

Its awsome you immediately recognized the old piston engine sound track for the jet, most modern reactors miss that. In 1980 most of the audience would have experienced both. The kids with coffee are directly reading lines from a movie called Zero Hour that is being parodyed by Airplane! except for the additional "like my men" The lady with the inner voice and her husband are the actors from this commercial kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3uXnHZ8Z5eCaNk

I'd say the mandatory list is, in no particular order: Naked Gun Top Secret Hot Shots National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 most of Mel Brooks' oeuvre and any available sequels. Honorable mention goes to Police Academy. Not specifically a parody, but it does feature an old gray-haired white guy who steals the show!

I didn't realise this film was pretty much a shot for shot parody of a specific film called Zero Hour! Having watched bits of it, I can see where the creepy Flight Captain character came from. In that film it was a mostly benign mentor figure to the boy but did give creepy vibes in the performance. This movie just brought those traits to the forefront.
