5:01 Rusty (Brad Pitt) says... "Off the top of my head, I'd say you're looking at a Boesky, a Jim Brown, a Miss Daisy, two Jethros and a Leon Spinks, not to mention the biggest Ella Fitzgerald ever!" This list of cons was created by director Steven Soderbergh and a screenwriter that described the type of people and cons needed to knock over the three casinos: Boesky - Saul playing Lyman Zerga. This is a reference to Ivan Boesky, a big-time trader on Wall Street who got caught committing securities fraud. The con is about a wealthy bankroller who has insider information. Jim Brown - the confrontation between Frank Catton and Linus Caldwell, staged to distract Terry Benedict so that Linus can lift the security codes to the vault. Named for the famous American football player Jim Brown. Miss Daisy - the SWAT vehicle used as the getaway car. From the movie Driving Miss Daisy (1989). Two Jethros (from The Beverly Hillbillies (1962)) - the Malloy brothers. "Hillbilly gear-head types" hired to take care of Miss Daisy, distraction purposes, and for general two-man work. Leon Spinks - the disruption of the boxing match. This refers to the surprise victory of Leon Spinks over Muhammad Ali. Ella Fitzgerald - the looped tape of the robbery that is played over Benedict's security system. A reference to a 1970s commercial for Memorex, in which a recording of Ella Fitzgerald's voice breaks a glass and the question is posed to the viewer: "Is it live or is it Memorex?"

At the poker table when we first see Brad Pitt and George Clooney together, those are all young (at the time) Hollywood actors playing themselves: Topher Grace from That 70's Show, Holly Marie Combs from Charmed, Joshua Jackson from Dawson's Creek, Barry Watson from 7th Heaven, and Shane West from A Walk To Remember. Brad Pitt was teaching them poker, and was more than happy to take money out of their pockets to help George Clooney win that hand (he gives the actors bad advice on the bluff, he knew George was not bluffing).
@lepton4

a fun note from that scene is when Pitt comes back into the room Topher and Clooney are talking about making the move from TV to Movies. George says - isn't it hard and Topher like - not for me. Saul is portrayed by the late Carl Reiner, a legendary comedic actor, and longtime friend of Mel Brooks. Also the father of Rob Reiner, known for, among other things, directing "The Princess Bride". A very privacy-concerned individual might simply keep their phone at home, maybe with a pre-paid plan. Or not have a phone plan on it, relying on public WiFi, VPN, Tor and non-identifying internet phone or other services. The former option would be the nothing-to-track, likely directly unidentifiable, though network-locatable and phone-tappable option. The latter would be the mostly untrackable option, except possibly through the services used and circumstantially connectable to specific cases of use through time-stamping and other surveillance, e.g. security cameras. If you're robbing millions and don't want to leave electronic traces where smart, thorough and inscrutable people might find them, leave your devices elsewhere.

Oh, I see the context. Well, if you're not into social media and simply want to enjoy, especially if you're a VIP with a driver and a lot of money and pull, it's kind of a power move. Your gorilla can just hand you a phone if you need one. But I suppose people *are* addicted by now.

I haven't seen anyone mention it, so I'll fill you in: the SWAT van was one of the two vans that Frank (Bernie Mac) bought at the car dealership. in that scene and later scenes, we only ever see the small white van in full. the glimpse of the other van is the pine tree air freshener hanging on the rearview mirror, which we see again during the SWAT reveal. I've seen this movie so many times and love it! there are so many layers to their heist, which makes the outcome so satisfying when it all goes (mostly) according to plan.

aaah...... actually..... the two small vans purchased from Mr Denim were 1) the van used to carry 'the pinch' and was destroyed in a parking lot during the heavy weight championship fight, and 2) the van filled with 'flyers of hookers' chased by casino workers and was destroyed at the airport by Ruben and one of the Mormon twins. the movie does not tell where the SWAT Team vehicle came from.

I absolutely love this movie! It was only on maybe my fifth re-watch of it that I understood that Saul's initial difficulty when it was time to do his schtick wasn't him having a medical episode; it was him rehearsing. He's rehearsing throughout, perfecting his accent and speech, and this was the finishing touch, rehearsing his cardiac arrest. Great performance from Carl Reiner. Also, they got the SWAT vans because they bought a whole fleet of vans and painted them. That's what the scene with Frank crushing the car salesman's hand was all about. This is such an intelligent and well-written film. You could watch it a dozen times and still see important things you missed before.

When you hear him talking to his parole officer, he says, "No, sir, I wouldn't even dream of leaving the state." 2. They bought the SWAT van at the same time they bought the white van. That shot at 18:12 of them not turning as the entire crowd does is a Hitchcock shot from "Strangers on a Train" where the entire crowd's heads are following a tennis ball back and forth, except for our antagonist who is deadlocked on his target. I also saw it famously referenced in "The Greatest Game Ever Played" (a VERY underappreciated movie directed by BILL PAXTON)(!) in a shot so beautiful it was in every trailer, where a crowd watches a golf ball except for the best golf player in the world...who is watching the player who made the shot.

Just a heads up. This movie is actually a remake of a 1960 movie called 'Ocean's 11.' The general concept is the same, except the characters are former Army buddies rather than professional crooks. That movie was _also_ an ensemble piece with prominent rolls going to members of The Rat Pack, including Frank Sinatra as Daniel Ocean. 2:40 - That's Bernie Mac. He was a big comedian in the late 90s/early 2000s. He was one of the Original Kings of Comedy and appeared in many movies and his own sitcom. He passed in 2008 at the young age of 50. 3:09 - This scene is really fun because here we have Brad Pitt playing Rusty, but he's surrounded by half a dozen 'teen' stars of the day all playing fictionalized versions of themselves. 3:39 - No, 'all reds' is not a Flush. Here's a quick run-down of basic Poker. A deck has 4 suits (the shapes on the cards): Diamonds and Hearts (red) and Clubs and Spades (black). Each suit has 13 cards: in ascending order 2-10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace. Your goal is to make sets with a hand of 5 cards. The possible hands in ascending order of value are High Card, One Pair, Two Pair, Three of a Kind, a Straight (five cards in sequence, for example: 8,9,10,Jack, Queen), a Flush (all of one suit), a Full House (ToaK and a Pair), Four of a Kind, and the Royal Flush (a Flush with the top ranked cards, 10, J, Q, K, Ace).The skill in the game comes from knowing which cards to redraw and being able to read your opponents to guess how strong their hands are. 5:01 - You do, because they mean NOTHING. In context these are various 'cons' that they need to pull off, but in reality, Pitt and Clooney were just told to make up a bunch of names for this line. 7:29 - Don Cheadle. TOP class actor. He replaced Terrance Howard as Rhodie (War Machine) in Iron Man 2 and later. 8:13 - He's a guy who slips into tight spaces. 14:48 - Julia Roberts. 16:15 - That's the High Roller table, so the latter. 18:59 - British slang is largely based on rhyming. You take the word you want to say, think of a word that rhymes with it, then say a word associated with that rhyming word.

For other Heist, Con, and Caper content, I'll recommend a couple of TV series that manage to have this kind of thing every week: Leverage (and the sequel series Leverage: Redemption) is basically an Ocean's 11 meets Robin Hood series about a team of thieves who carry out heists and cons against the rich and powerful - corporations, corrupt politicians, organised crime, etc. - to help people who've been hurt in ways that the law can't fix. It ran for five seasons (with two more in the sequel show, and a third on the way), and it's a light, fun, and deeply-satisfying show. The other is the BBC series Hustle, which is similar - a group of con artists carry out long cons against rich and corrupt people (because "you can't con an honest man"). It ran for eight seasons, but it's British TV, so the seasons are only 6 episodes each.

I'm so hyped for you to get into these movies, 11, 12, 13. This one 11 was PHENOMENAL, 12 was hit and miss, 13 regained it's form but you got to check out the OG after Oceans 11 from 1960 with Dean Martin and old blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra.
