This video is intended to show that you can walk away from a bad situation if you continue to fly the airplane until it stops. In this case the engine quit without warning at 200 feet above the ground and there were only 20 seconds for recognition, trouble-shooting, decision-making, and execution before ground contact.
Studies have shown that without at least 500 feet between the airplane and the ground at engine failure a complete turn-back is not possible and further an analysis by an Annapolis professor of aerodynamics concluded that in this case I had only a 90 degree arc on either side of the nose in which to turn and execute a landing. He figured that I used 85 degrees and had very little options left. As a learning point, he suggests making emergency turns at 45 degrees angle of bank in order to get the maximum amount of turn vs. altitude loss instead of the 28 degrees that I used if one needs to maximize the turn radius. Obviously this one put me where I needed to be.
To the Monday morning quarterbacks: Look carefully at the obstacles before deciding there was a better place to put the aircraft; there wasn't. Also, keep in mind that this is intended to show the short period of time after the engine failure, not the cause which has not been determined.
The NTSB was on scene within a few minutes of the crash because they were already at the airport where this happened writing up a report on a previous crash. The immediately checked fuel lines and tanks and found that the injected fuel lines were still pressurized and fuel was getting to the engine. The tanks were full and I had personally supervised refueling the evening before. The fuel was bright and clear and free from contaminants at pre-flight # 1 hour before the incident.
There was no "mud dauber" activity or any other build-up of outside sources. I had flown the airplane at least four hours for each of the previous five days, each after a thorough pre-flight inspection. All switches and selectors were in their proper positions upon landing, nothing half-way here or there. Ironically, I turned to the pilot not flying but occupying the right seat and told him to verify the position of every switch and selector because the FAA or the NTSB would surly ask; if not I joked that every pilot who saw the video would be full of ideas and it would be nice to be able to say with certaintay what was where.
I am an ATP rated in both airplanes and helicopters (single & multi-engine land and sea), am an instructor in (CFII/MEI Airplane & helicopter) and have 45 years of flying experience, many of it flying the far reaches of Alaska. My background includes retired military pilot (safety & instructor), former chief pilot for commercial 135 operations, for director of operations for same, and many years of aerial fire-fighting and other challenging flying jobs.
I hope this video is instructive in some way.

Yeah, he was right at the very crest of that wave the entire way down. You can just tell, there wasn't another foot to have squeezed out of that situation. The entire craft was shuddering from the stall buffeting before he even crossed over the water. That was right in the pocket of the absolute bleeding edge of lift and safe descent rate.
@landen99

"Handling that perfectly" would have been no turn to the left and minimal turn to the right and more nose down for best glide speed and flaring at the end. Instead we saw a turn to the left, slow airspeeds (too much pitch up), excessive turn to the right and minimal flare at the end.

No!!!! Gear fully down or up gives you maximum protection. Based on the last annual it takes 12 seconds to cycle the gear down in this 12 Volt airplane. It was 20 seconds from engine out at 200' AGL to on the ground. The gear would have been in transition and it would have been a disaster. Besides, I cleared the 6-8 foot berm just beyond the river by about 1 foot. With the gear down I would have clipped it and ended up upside down or worse. I walked away, isn't that good enough?

Look behind the DC6 carefully and you'll see an 8 foot high cyclone fence & a berm and rough ground, not a pretty place to land. 20 seconds from engine failure to touchdown, mags, fuel, master, not nearly as important from 200 ft. AGL as flying the airplane. Door remained closed for structural integrity. I am here to fly tomorrow, I'm happy with my decision-making, and the outcome was as good as it could be under the circumstances. A lot went on in 20 seconds and I'm here to tell about it.

What about the gravel road straight ahead? He could have done it easily. The trees at the end were far enough, we could have used the altitude he had for some energy that could have been dissipated by forward slipping if necessary. Btw, this is easy to say on paper, but being up there and making the choice is what matters, and this gentleman walked out alive.

The engine @ 200 feet above the ground. The aircraft was clean; gear up, flaps up. When the engine quits you push the nose over to let the descent provide airflow over the wings to provide lift. Pitch controls speed which determines the distance you can glide within design paramaters. It's a tradeoff and you must know your own airplane's glide characteristics well in order to have the best outcome in this situation. I now own a twin-engine airplane, a Beech Baron.

Yep. I live in Alaska and well remember the incident. Am familiar with the area he flew and crashed into terrain at elevation. It's a mountain pass he attempted in VFR yet at the time including before he even departed Fairbanks it was IMC to the point the mountains weren't even visible. He was flying so low he was spotted from the highway by more than one driver, which roughly paralleled his flight path near Cantwell. Not a good/ cautious and conservative pilot yet acted as a flight leader for visiting pilots flying their own planes. Scary frankly and a lesson to be wary of who you trust. It sucks his ignorance of his own limitatiins cost two others their lives

All I had time to do on the way down was say "Tower, I have a problem", figured that was enough said. I turned off all power after landing, no further radio calls in case of spilled fuel, I could hear the ELT going off. EMS was on scene in about 5 minutes and my wife called me in about 15 minutes. SARSAT monitors picked up the 406 MHz ELT signal & called her at home, she me on my cell phone. I had bak pain so stayed in the plane, broke my L-3 and sternum.

You are going to want to read the Kathryn's Report on this pilot's fatal accident June 28 2013, Beechcraft Baron at Cantwell, Alaska. There is no way this guy should have been flying where he was nor any way he should have been flying at all as PIC. He grabbed another pilot for the fatal flight, to make it legal, or so he thought .. in any case two experienced pilots managed to fly a perfectly good airplane into the side of a mountain in IMC without an instrument flight plan. Trying to run scud and stay VFR. AFAIC this guy was a damned fool and got himself and two other people killed. As for what he did or didn''t do in the accident shown here in this video, all I can say is, I would take whatever he says about it with a large grain of salt.

Thanks for referring viewers to this--it's a good corrective to any first impressions one might have of this video, and the (sadly now deceased) poster's commentary on it. I personally found it deeply troubling. I'm not a pilot, but the hubris and know-it-all arrogance that evidently contributed to this man's demise--along with two other innocent victims--are tendencies ANY person might fall prone to if they don't take care to question themselves, stay humble and remain open to criticism. It's a lesson for all of us to heed.

Great video Dale. Great piloting. Looks like she started mushing there in the stall right before contact, and it also appears as if though the right wing actually dropped right before touch down. These Bonnies have a fairly high wing loading and high stall speed. Same with Barons. Great job man.

Landing straight ahead would have ended in the trees. So this decision seems reasonable, although it required a rather high turn angle which brings the risk of stalling and which caused drag. Turning a little bit shallower might have Been a bit better but under those circumstances it was a well decision.

Note to self: always remember where you intend to land in case of thrust loss during initial climb. The short decision time is why this is a pre-flight checklist item on single engine piston powered props. You don't trubleshoot, just react. At least he crashed with the wings level, one wing grabbing the ground is... unpleasant. Also the most common mistake on videos posted on youtube imho.
