Just got this idea: Be sure to pack one change of clothes in your personal item bag (just in case), and pack these in a compression cube. Then you can use the cube as a pillow on the plane.

@@snafutimes6883 Ha, ha. Now you've learned the hard way! I'll bet that, next time, you'll carry a change of clothes in your personal item bag -- note: NOT the carry-on that goes in the compartment above your seat because there's also a chance that there won't be room for it, and the flight attendant at the gate will have to check it in the cargo hold. It's the smaller personal item bag that fits under the seat in front of you.

One essential item I always pack, whether on a plane or in a car trip is a nylon shopping bag that folds into its own case that can be attached to a purse or backpack. Not only is it a shopping bag but it can be used for a beach bag, and it is very cheap. Another item I carry instead of large bulky towels, blankets or pillows is a micro-fiber towel in a square case. In the case it is a pillow. Out of the case it is a blanket, a towel or a beach towel. It takes up a minimum of space and is quick drying when wet. The one thing I didn't hear you mention to put into a personal bag is medicine or a mini first aid kit (bandaids, etc.). Many of us are on prescription meds and must have easy access without the chance of a carry-on getting checked for lack of space.

I would never carry a blanket. It’s too bulky and only serves one purpose. I prefer a large scarf/pashmina or a sarong can serve as a scarf, dress, skirt, shawl, blanket, tote, towel, curtain, lampshade

There are so many suggestions being added to your must-haves. I’d also include Bonine for nausea and from a KZbinr I got the suggestion to carry a ziplock bag that can be used to place your iPad, kindle or reading material for coverage in the seat pocket to help avoid some possible unpleasantness that had also occupied that space.

I always carry about 10 feet of duct tape wrapped around a golf pencil. It is about the size of a lip balm and has come in handy for everything from a broken shoe to a broken zipper. Mini zip ties. I take a few pages out of a games book (sudoku, word search, crossword puzzle) to keep me busy and they can be tossed when done. Baggies! I save small bags from when my dentist gives me new hygiene items, fast food, or whatever else and use them for collecting garbage at my seat. Doggie poo bags work well, too. (They come in handy in my day bag, as well, when I’m out sightseeing.) I keep all my goodies in a small packing cube with a handle and a carabiner to hang it on the seat pocket in front of me for easy access.

For me, I always travel with feminine wipes, unscented. I travel a lot to Turkey, and many bathrooms are a big dirt pit you stand over. It can get so hot walking, and it’s wonderful to have in case you have NO TOILET PAPER. Especially when you are out sight seeing. I also make sure that when I am packing, I always put a change of underwear in my carry on bag.

Your video has so many helpful insights! Thank you so much for the time and care you put into this. The one thing I disagree with is the recommendation to take an empty water bottle and refill it from one of those airport water fountain spigots. Sit near one, watch other people using it, and you will often see people putting the mouth of their water bottle right on the spigot, transferring their germs to the spigot and, from there, the germs go to anybody else who uses it. Even before COVID, when I observed that lack of caution from other people, I stopped using those things. Personally, I would rather pay an outrageous price for a bottle of water at an airport terminal shop.

For me, a pain management kit is essential. I have chronic joint pain, and the excessive air condition on some of the flights causes a flare-up, which takes approximately 2 weeks for it to resolve.😞 So having a pain management kit is a must-have; mine includes compression gloves, Nature's Willow Willow Balm, a pack of Alieve for desperate times, and wrist braces. From now on, I would add loose tea as a requirement to help me warm up and mitigate flare-ups and a blanket of some sort. A Kindle/book and a choose-your-own-adventure gamebook are a must. If the plane's entertainment system requires a jack headset, I'll have an Anker Bluetooth transmitter so I can utilize my wireless headset.

A pen for filling out forms that are distributed on the plane. Several N95 masks to protect you from other people’s sniffles. Some international flights still require their use. Hand sanitizer. I LOVE MY Turkish Towel!! I bring it with me on pretty much every trip. I wrap it around my neck as a scarf when boarding the plane. I've used it at least several times on cold flights. As a plus size traveler, it fits me much better than any hotel or air bnb towel. I use their towel for my hair and this one for my body. It's long enough to act as a robe when I walk from the bathroom to my bedroom: I wrap it around me once, then tie the ends behind my neck and voila! toga robe! I also can't tell you how many times I've pulled it out in other countries when the nights were colder than we expected and it was another blanket layer.

Great tips! I also include extra contacts lenses and my glasses in case I need to or want to remove my lenses. Change of clothes and basic toiletries incase luggage is lost. A foot sling-some airlines don't mind if you use one and a non aerosol air freshener for the bathroom. You may also want to bring a fast acting nasal spray. If you have any congestion this will save you from potential ear pain when ascending.

After traveling again for the umpteenth time and needing to board 4 flights and enduring long waiting periods for next flights, and often needing to overnight in a hotelroom, I've been considering to design my own carry on/back pack. Going through security is the greatest challenge to keeping things organized and easy retrievable. I nèèd to have all my stuff with me - including a hefty laptop weighing 5 kg with power connections, different adaptors for different countries and àll the stuff and more you also suggest. We often experience cancelled flights and unforseen overnight stays. Our travel usually lasts three whole days and going through 4 time zones and àll the security checks. It's a challenge.

So, any medical providers out there, this is for you! If you travel enough on an airplane, you’re going to get called upon to help a fellow passenger. I’ve learned to travel with a little compact case that contains a blood pressure cuff a small stethoscope, a thermometer that is a digital scanner type and a small pulse oximeter. This comes in handy to get a quick set of vitals because inevitably medical emergencies are hectic on the plane and, there are variations and how much equipment may be available for medical assessments. also have your NPI readily available. I just keep mine on my phone.

It's a nice backpack, but you would be hard pressed to use it as a personal item for international travel. 40 x 30 x 10 cm is the kind of size expected these days. For this reason, you have to ditch a lot of items, especially conventional travel pillows and large water bottles 🙁 Snacks are their own issue. There are biosecurity issues upon entering some countries which mean that any fruit or open packages of snacks will have to be discarded and all unopened snacks declared. Any squishy snack is also a 'liquid', and has to be in the 3-1-1 😣 I can't go anywhere without a notebook for writing and sketches.

Earplanes are a "must" for me as well! And, they also save me from losing hearing for a few weeks after flying. I used to hold cups (that I packed), with hot towels/tissues (hot water from flight attendant), tightly over my ears throughout the descent and that helped a LOT for pain prevention and subsequent deafness. Some flight attendants thought I was nuts but I didn't care ~ it worked well! Thank goodness for Earplanes ~ they are much easier!! p.s. and i avoid flying into ORD because of the rapid descent!

Some airlines (in my case, Virgin Air), do not allow any lithium batteries in the cabin. I think all airlines don’t allow lithium batteries in the hold. So the power banks (all carry lithium batteries) that I bought for my trip overseas have to be left at home. I understand the safety of doing this. I’d rather live than use my tablet. I hope they have something at each seat to charge our phone, laptops, or tablets. I can’t wait until there are these products that use quantum energy. It’s free, it’s safe, and it exists, but it has been suppressed in favor of traditional energy from hydrocarbons.

RN here. 2 things about the Neosporin: It's an antibacterial & has no effect on viruses, but otherwise not a bad idea UNLESS you are allergic to Neomycin. If you've used triple antibiotic ointment (a.k.a. Neosporin) without any allergic reaction, fine. If you are allergic, I'd recommend switching to Polysporin.

Thank you for commenting about this. It is actually the reason that airlines no longer offer peanuts. One of my children is allergic to peanuts and has been airborne sensitive to them in the past which has required emergency medical help. We let our airlines know in advance AND it is announced at the start of the flight. Our goal is to get to our destination without delays. However, an in flight emergency will cause a plane to make an emergency landing.

Great stuff but how on earth do you manage to take a water bottle on a long-haul flight? I've had so many bottles confiscated when travelling internationally. Now, for emergency hydration, I take water in what are basically shampoo bottles under 100 ml. I also take a cheap but sturdy glass or acrylic container so I can ask for water and not have to drink it all at once because I can't store those flimsy plastic cups. I can jam it into the seat pocket.
