Maybe the oddest thing I ever made music with? The 1960s Bauknecht Tuning Fork Modulator STG 102 was used in instrument landing systems for airplanes and air traffic control. It is an electro-mechanical oscillator, which is both beautiful and very limited. But limits are great for creativity.

You will hate me for this . As a young airman I trashed heaps of this stuff when we upgraded to TACAN systems , I'm talking truckloads. Btw that is part of the approach and landing guidance system . The two frequencies are transmitted on different antennas,so if one is greater then the other you are off course for the runway ,amplitude sets distance

oh hell yeah more test equipment! I wonder what the scientists in the 50s would think if they saw their very serious computation machines turned into techno instruments haha

There wasn't much in the way of Techno in the 50's, so I think they'd probably be shocked more by the music than the use of the equipment.

I believe that it would be used for intercepting a localizer frequency to help the aircraft set its glide slope. Those two frequencies, iirc, are the two that the antennae broadcast. When the plane receives an equal amplitude signal of both, then it’s on the slope. When it gets too much of one then it knows, based on which freq, that it is above or below the glide slope path.

I had a working 1971 Bulova Accutron and never got tired of listening to the hum of the tuning fork inside (until a small amount of moisture got inside somehow and ruined it). I also have 2 Omega 360hz tuning fork watches I bought a few years ago and they were even cooler though.

My guess is that it is a frequency standard used for checking the audio frequency modulation of the radio beacon carrier waveform. Maybe the analog electronic oscillators in the 50's could not generate a low frequency waveform as precisely as a tuning fork could, and this was the era's quartz standard for low frequencies.

Splendid stuff. Require notes beyond two or three fixed frequencies? Run it thru a frequency shifter. Many folks often run crappy gear thru a bunch of effects. While that sometimes works, I much prefer the approach of manipulating far simpler, older, sexier, and ultimately more pleasing sounding equipment, as in the general music engineering approach of employing a better sound at the source to record utilizing a "better" instrument - whatever that means to the operator. I like that method. And these kinds of primitive oscillators inspire creativity. I cannot jive with a Microkorg. I no longer drink alcohol, though suddenly I miss a Warsteiner dunkel. Correlation? Yes.

For me the most exciting video I've seen from you so far. Fascinating with which signal generators you can create everything music. This reminds me that back then we used cassettes to store data and a sound signal was also used to record programs on e.g. load or save my ZX Spectrum.

Outstanding video! My back ground is in Electromechanical Engineering, and wow, Ive gotta say, this make want to modify this device to have variable frequency oscillators… Perhaps find a way to add a mechanical bracket which allows the tuner coil-inducers to be adjusted for different tuners? I dont know, but my imagination is going wild, wanting to experiment with this device… It really has great qualities for sound design! Kind regards, sir!

Because it is/was inventory of the german air traffic control, which is responsible for all the radio navigational aids like the ILS in germany, this device is most likely used on the ground, where this navaids are stationed. I think it was used for tuning the ILS and its regular maintenance. If you are really interested in its use, I could ask an ILS technician at work about it.
@Hainbach
@Hainbach 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is ground equipment. From what I gathered from aviator's feedback here, this unit provided the same guiding signals that are in use today, 90 and 150hz. So it likely was the guiding oscillator for ILS.
