I saw this in the theatres when it first came out. For the first, and so far, only time in my life I actually saw someone in the audience laughing so hard they fell out of their seat and rolled in the aisle. A true classic

@@CanadiansReact I have both this and "AIRPLANE 2: The Sequel" on DVD. They're timeless and still hilarious over forty years later. If you want to see something just as ridiculous, try watching "POLICE SQUAD". Leslie Nielsen is in that too. Sadly, they only made six episodes because the networks said there were just too many one liners and sight gags but it's just as ridiculous and side splitting funny. Best to you and yours and the rest of Canada. Be safe and be well.

Yup... The one HUGE running gag in this that never fails to me me laugh, but no one seems to notice is that the plane is a JET airliner, but they used the sound of a WW2 prop plane for it's sound effect, both exterior/interior shots throughout the film...;)

Me and my buddy went opening night to the movie and sat in the very front row. The saying goes that we were "rolling on the floor laughing"; me and my buddy literally were doing that. We ended up going the very next night to try and catch all the jokes and gags we missed the first night because they were so layered in the movie. One of the best movies all-time.

This was the first comedy Leslie Nielsen did. He had a long career as a serious actor first. A lot of the supporting actors (like Lloyd bridges) also had long careers as serious actors. It made the impact of the movie at the time even greater. Nielsen then went on to have a second career as a comedic actor.

A consequence of Leslie Nielsen switching from serious movies to comedies, and Leslie said it himself, was that it ruined a lot of his earlier movies. Everybody keeps waiting for the punchline in them.
@thepayne78624 жыл бұрын
The scene where she gets slapped it was actually the actress idea to have them slap her. The reason was in all of those type of disaster movies there was always one hysterical woman that got slapped. They also had to get permission from the bee gees to play it at double speed like that.

This was statistically proven to be the #1 comedy movie of all time, to this day, providing a laugh no less than every 10 seconds! Every one was so very literal. Almost every actor/actress seen in this movie was already famous in their own right!

To me what makes the movie so funny is that everything is completely deadpan( except Johnny in the control tower). That and the almost constant sight gags.

Some jokes were related to the time. Like the 2nd cup of coffee. There was a famous commercial in that era where men never had second cups of coffee at home but did when they went out and tried that brand.

If you haven't heard of "Zero Hour" yet, you have to see that movie to really appreciate the humor of this. Nobody ever seems to notice the plane's engine sounds. It changes between jets and propellers. My favorite running gag is Lloyd Bridges and the, "Looks like I picked the wrong week to...". The best one is cut out and comes at the end, "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue."

Fun fact: This movie was inspired by a relatively obscure 1957 drama called "Zero Hour!" Ted Stryker is a former Royal Canadian Air Force pilot who has to land a passenger plane. "Airplane!" is a comic remake/rip-off, with some of the dialogue and camera angles nearly identical.

This was playing at a drive-in theater in my area when it came out. The place was packed and the laughter coming from the cars was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. There are a lot of jokes that were very much part of that time. For example, the woman and the coffee, 'Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home'. That was an annoying actual commercial then. this movie is so full of cultural references at that time, the woman thinking to herself was from a coffee commercial and too funny. Airplane was a spoof on all the disaster movies called Airport. The movies are distinguished by the year they were released, Airport (Dean Martin starred in the 1st one), Airport '75 was the best of them, starring Charlton Heston and a 747. And mostly what Airplane was spoofing.

The wanted to make a serious movie but with off the wall humor but to the characters in the movie, that was normal. The humor and straight talk was the same to them, which is what makes it work so well.
