Hey! I have loved Chaka Khan for 50 years. You really would check her with De La Soul: "All Good" and I adore "Like Sugar" from her last album. She's my Queen of Funk!

That opening reminds me of Earth Wind and Fire. Man those were special years. Earth Wind and Fire, Edwin Starr, Billy Preston, Ohio Players, 5th Dimension, Temptations, Sly, Nina, Aretha, Ray Charles... Early Jackson 5. It was a more loving time in America then.

I saw her in 74'- 75' when she was with Rufus and they were good enough to open up for The Who, so you should check out their stuff from back then. That was an unforgettable concert 👍🏻🤩

So grateful I was born in '59 to include her masterful brand of slick prog R&B into my teenage appreciation/entertainment orbit, being a small time regional musician of '70's rock, jazz, classical, theater pit, early alt. and nu wave on guitar/bass back then.

Rufus & Chaka Khan's hit 'Tell me something good" came out in 1974 but I believe she joined the group before then. She is one of my favorite female singers! "Sweet thang" "I'm every woman" "Whatcha gonna do for me"

The back ground vocalists on this song are: Chaka, Hamish Stuart & Alan Gorrie from AWB and bassist and singer Will Lee. You should also react to Roll Me Through the Rushes, from this album, co-written by David Lasley who wrote You Bring Me Joy, covered by Anita Baker. You should listen to David's version too. David sang background for a lot of people including James Taylor (not the Kool & The Gang James Taylor) and Luther Vandross and has written some great songs. RIP David Lasley.

Chaka's career started in the 1970s. ...early '70s. ...with the band: RUFUS [commonly quoted for the song: "Tell Me Something Good" (written by: Stevie Wonder) ...and (less often) "Ain't Nobody"--by the way: Rufus kicked ass. They have albums-and-albumsworth full of excellent material!]. Chak started he solo career with THIS album [1978] and went a bit more: "dance-floor diva"/"disco," etc. (which was "the staple," at that moment) in her sound/material (top me, personally: WEAKER than what she HAD been doing, BUT!: that isn't saying that: it was, somehow, "bad!" No. Wasn't!) ...but her core is in deep funk and Jazz. ...As far as I recall, her first approach at doing things professionally -which didn't HAPPEN, but: she WAS "courted!"- was that: after Baby Huey died (not sure if you know him ...but ya should!), she was courted to replace him in his, established, outfit (Baby Huey & The Babysitters --I believe was the name 🤷🤷). Covering Prince ["I Feel For You" (with the legendary Melle-Mel [Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five!] throwing a few "struttin' bars" into it -Let's recall that: to "middle America"?? at THAT point?? ...hip-hop was, basically, "an unknown" ..."a sideshow" ...and outside of N.Y., L.A, Chicago, maybe a few other places, the name Melle-Mel was NOT "legendary," it was, widely, unknown & unrecognized by the majority of people!! ...SO: THIS was an important and well-thought-out move, here!)], really, reestablished Chaka as a solo artist and as a viable force in the '80s ...but she ALWAYS had vast respect and love from her fellow musicians and writers! --Also (important: "side-note"): Chaka got her performing name from a name given to her (Africanized) by: a Yoruba Shaman/'Priest,"well-before her involvement with the Black Panther movement, in Chicago [where Chaka was raised] (Her first stepmother was deeply involved in the movement and Chaka, herself, was friends with Fred Hampton, even.💜💜). ...so the rumor that "Chaka Khan: is a "Panther name" (or Panther-sourced) is not true and is a common rumor. ...so: there is a *highly* spiritual component (and importance!!) to her name.

I recommend: Rufus' cover of the LEGENDARY Allen Toussaint's: "Whoever's Thrilling You (Is Killing Me!)" [I, actually, don't know who the initial recording artist, for this, was. I am mainly familiar with the Rufus version -but I *AM* aware that the excellent (and RIDICULOUSLY-FAR-underrated) Gayle McCormick (vocalist) also covered/did this song, around this same time-period, as did: Z.Z. Hill] You can't go wrong with Allen Toussaint! 🤘🤘

As I heard early in the track the "horns" I had to listen closely as the song progressed to figure out if it was real brass or if it was synth. My ears heard both synth and horns. And it WAS, at least according to Wikipedia. Track 4 has two French Horns and a Synthesizer. Great track, I'd never heard it before that I can remember.

Chaka Khan is unique among all the female soul singers of her generation in that you don't really hear church in her singing. I don't know her musical background but I hear more Jazz influences than anything else.
