Davis Bowie was the great chameleon, changing his image and musical styles as often as most of us change our linens. The thing was he was good at all of it. Folk, hard rock, funk and soul, psychedelia, you name it.

David Bowie's first instrument was saxophone. He took lessons as a child from Ronnie Ross, a noted London jazz sideman. Ross played the sax solo in Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side," which Bowie produced. You can hear Bowie play sax on his cover of the Stax classic "Knock On Wood" by Eddie Floyd on his "David Live" album, recorded in Philadelphia in 1974.

Love what you're doing guys - what you need to appreciate about David Bowie is that in the first ten years or so of his career (c. 1969 - 1980) he had at least 5 distinctly different personas so don't be surprised if the next track you play from him sounds completely different. If you want something that rocks - 'Gene Genie', for something more funky -'Young Americans' for something completely off the wall 'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' THE WHOLE ALBUM. Bowie, no matter what stage of his career, was always cool. Every time I try to pick my favorite album by him, I get confounded because each are unique. I, personally, like "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" as a complete album, but "Golden Years" and "Young Americans" are possibly my favorite songs by him.

Just want to give a shout out to Carlos Alomar, who keeps it strong on rhythm guitar on many Bowie albums. If I recall correctly, the bassist here is George Murray, who was with Bowie through Scary Monsters in 1980. Great rhythm section.

Your on a roll guys. I saw Bowie in YYZ in 1974. Space Oddity was one of his best songs. Midway thru the show the lights went out and the opening guitar strumming of that song started. All of a sudden a spotlight flashed on him high in the air in a cherry picker singing the opening lines. He had bright orange hair with white powder caked on his face and a dark blue lightening bolt across his face from ear to ear. It was great. Yes the song 'Fame' is great. Funky and right up your alley. Also, yes he played multiple instruments. RIP David...

It's wild that you guys heard Elvis in this. He actually wrote this song FOR Elvis, with whom he shared a record label (RCA) but Elvis never recorded it. Bowie did play sax on quite a few of his songs, and he played guitar on most of the Diamond Dogs album. He also contributed keyboards, etc. to the "Berlin trilogy" albums.

David Bowie was a chameleon, no one-trick wonder. He changed personas, from the Thin White Duke to Ziggy Stardust... there is NO way his music could be defined by genre. I admit that during the 70s, he took a back seat to the funk, blues & soul I was listening to. Fast forward to 2006. I have a daughter who had discovered Bowie and she talked me into taking her to see Bowie live at Chastain Park in Atlanta. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Imagine 10,000 people, in unison, singing "wham, bam, thank you ma'am," from "Suffragette City," ... he played for 3 hours with no break. He ran into SRV at Montreaux and enlisted him to play on "Let's Dance" and "China Girl." Long story short -- too late -- you guys have just begun to discover one of the greatest musicians of all time. "I'm Afraid of Americans" is another. "Angie" by the Rolling Stones was about David's wife. He later married the beautiful Somalian model, Iman, and they were together for some 20 years before his death. As always, you guys are the BEST reactors I've seen. Keep up the good work!!

It's impossible to choose a favourite Bowie. He gave us so many to choose from. If you don't lfeel ike listening to one David Bowie, just pick a different one. Recently I've been in the mood for Drum and Bass David Bowie so I've been listening to the Earthling album. For a flavour of that try "Little Wonder" or "I'm afraid of Americans". I think I'm edging towards Progressive Rock Bowie so - The Man who Sold the World next. If you want a flavour of that you can't go wrong with the title track. As Mama said - "David Bowie's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get". But it'll give you life.

I was fortunate enough to see him live twice ..once at the beginning of his journey, then his final world reality tour ..believe me he is that good and all the incredible musicians who worked along side him..Brilliant. Beautiful memories - At the age of 18 I was by the Bad Segeberg open-air stage at the David Bowie concert in Germany (1984).Bowie lived from 1976-1978 in what was then divided Berlin (West), where he got off drugs. The albums "Low" (1977), "Lodger" (1979) and the well-known "Heroes" (1977) were created there. He produces The Idiot and Lust for Life with Iggy Pop, who lived next door and he appeared in the German film "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" about the heroin scene in Berlin at the time (1981).😻

David Bowie was a Chameleon and went through several phases of musical career. This was part of Bowie's R&B era, that he called 'Plastic Soul'. This album and Young Americans (1975 & 76) we both a big part of that influence. On Young Americans (song and album) you will find a previously unknown / unsigned Luther Vandross on backing vocals. And the story goes that he had some input with Bowie on the 'sound' of some of the tracks.

Bowie ( pronounced Bo-ee) was a multi instrumentalist, playing Saxophone, guitar, harmonica, and piano. During this period ,mid 1970’s was his Blue-eyed soul era , he appeared on Soul train and may have been the first white artist to do so. He was heavily into drugs around this time , lost a lot of weight and adopted the Thin white duke, persona.

Fantastic flashback. Such an era. His androgynous image gave him a different fan base. I really love the guy. Back then we were supposed to be creeped out. He married a beautiful black model and I think some part of the industry shunned Bowie for marrying a supermodel. Btw: Bowie could play many instruments which helped his writing. But he always preferred more talented musicians than himself back him because his voice was his preferred instrument. Hope his wife is doing well these days.

You're right. He used to show his demos to the musicians and tell them something like "I want you to play this, but better than me" and then he gave them free hand to improve the instrumental part. Iman seems to be well these days. I think that it was hard for her during the first years after David's death, but she said that the isolation during the Covid pandemic actually helped her deal with her grief and come to terms with it. After the restrictions ended, Iman became really active. She has appeared on TV again, she has launched a perfume and she has a line of clothes now besides her old business with the cosmetics. She says she is not interested in remarrying, because, in her mind, she is still married to David, she has been wearing a necklace with his name since his death, she still talks about him in the present tense, but she seems more "open" now.

Popped my pop music cherry back in 1969 with the David Bowie single Space Oddity. With not much spare money in those vinyl days I always played the B side, where his song "Wild Eyed Boy From Free Cloud" was lurking. I had no idea you could tell a story like that with a song. .I was hooked on music in that moment. David was humble too. When asked about his success he replied that he just got lucky with the songs. But it was more than that, he created personas through his career and explored musical styles, and as such remained current as music changed through the years. We all have our favourites, but outside of those monster hits I have affection for his rendition of "Amsterdam", and "Sound and Vision", but to be honest it was all good to hear. Great reaction guys. For me, this is Bowies best album in a career filled with absolute bangers. The Thin White Duke years and the Station to Station album were self confessed - hard to remember - by the man himself because of a serious coke addiction. But every track on that album is 🔥 He eventually weaned himself off the blow by moving to what was at the time the heroin capital of the world, Berlin. Which then became the setting for Bowies next three albums known as “The Berlin Trilogy” Great day today fellas. Posted three of my favourite artists. LZ Bowie Rush. Thank you 👏🤟🙏
